    Anti-Modern Football

Interested to find out what others think. Since Liverpool's tragedy in Hillsborough in '96, English football in particular, changed forever. No more terraces for the working class. All-seater stadiums gave football a soulless atmosphere. High ticket prices..loss of player loyalty where only money reigns during transfer season..similar to how the PBA lost its soul when money and Fil-Ams took over. Some loyal ultras just want the old football back, devoid of corporate opportunists and rich foreigners buying clubs etc. As the world becomes smaller, has modern football killed the passion and the soul that goes along with it or some people just refuse to part with the old culture?

Uuh, I think you meant anti-football for that. I was talking about the commercialization, loss of soul and loyalty, lack of ultra spirit during matches, and disregard for tradition of today's football. Much of Eastern Europe and South American leagues would still have terraces for standing, flares are still allowed and you still have hordes of ultra fans. The top tiered leagues and their 1st Divisions, however, have become too money-driven.

To satisfy your thirst for club bashing on Pex, I can make a separate topic on Chelsea's "anti-football" run last season if you want.

no need really. i was just ribbing

arsenal just wants to make profit and make the champions league. forget about the silverware... it's sad, really.

Always relevant in discussions like this. The phenomenon of daytrippers/tourists attending your club's matches happen in a LOT of clubs right now.

English football became plastic when the premier league was born.

Well, I consider Barcelona's style of play anti-football

The last time I remembered, the purpose of football is to score a goal and not to let your opponent score a goal against you.

    It's not about possession

^ eh? isn't barcelona a high scoring club? hehe pero baka nag jjoke ka lang

Wala daw kasi purpose ang pasa ng Barca Hehe. Nasaan na mga Barca haters?

Hope you guys see the difference between anti-football, and the topic, anti-modern football.

Dont even know how anti-football came about. I am still of the belief that all strategies and tactics needed should be employed in every match..with winning as the aim. Graceful and entertaining football should only be secondary.

Anyway, back to the topic. Just found out that Cardiff will now be changing their colors to red. They will no longer be called the Bluebirds...but the...uhh..Dragons...demands made by the foreign owners. Another item to be added in the list of what modern football is all about. Also found out that the Community Shield may be possibly played in China next year. Another item to be added to the list. And well, everybody knows that the Spanish Super Cup will now be played in China come 2013.

All things have gone global, no doubt. Good thing, especially for us fans in other countries who support for various reasons, but not necessarily because of affinity.

Sadly, it is this corporate manhandling that has left most clubs with no choice but to ride with the tide, lest they be left behind--sacrificing tradition, culture and even home stadiums..leaving pitches soulless and waning of passion.

Think it's terrible what's going on at Cardiff. I'm all for progress, but changing the club's colours, nickname and badge essentially it's identity is going to far. To me it looks like the owners have held the club to ransom by saying make these changes if you want this 100million investment . Sadly all this will be forgotten if Cardiff make it into the Premier League next season.

I almost forgot to mention how these corporate manhandlings has given rise to supporters who, having felt alienated and disgusted with the commercialization of their clubs, decided to put up their own clubs.

There's SV Austria Salzburg....now FC Red Bull Salzburg which led to supporters re-registering the old name. There's Glazer's takeover of Man Utd. which led to the birth of FC Utd of Manchester. Wimbledon FC..which gave rise to AFC Wimbledon. And a vid posted here showed AFC Liverpool's birth due to LP fans who cant afford matchday prices anymore.

Barcelona sold out when they put UNICEF at the back of their jerseys for Qatar Foundation. But what can they do, the Spanish economy is so bad right now.

There are also some reports that Barcelona are signing Neymar not only to bolster the front line but as a sponsorship move -- since Messi is not Nike (which is Barcelona's shirt sponsor), they will bring Neymar in as the team's brand ambassador. Their president, Sandro Rosell, used to work for Nike.

Recent football clubs are now corporate entities and/or clubs thriving on resources from social trust and investments. It's the sign of the times, and it's happening in almost every professional team sport. Just look at the name: Barclays Premier League.

The passion and the soul are still there, and they coexist with big investments and profiteering from capitalists. You need money for the infrastructure of your youth academy. You need money to pay for the players' wages that have become extravagant in the world of professional sports. Clubs need investments to be able to compete, and fans love competition, and big-name players, and silverware.

Fans are still passionate about the sport. City fans, Chelsea fans, Barca, Real Madrid, and Man United (when they are winning) aren't complaining, as long as they get their superstars and their silverware. There's still the passion and soul, but it's just hard to see because of all the excesses that surround it.

I think it would also be interesting to find out how the anti-modern football loyalists perceive us football fans in Asia. It is no secret that most top-flight leagues across Europe (special emphasis on the EPL) are looking at Asia as their next cash cow. With all the merchandise they can profit from Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, SG, Indonesia etc., the big leagues only know too well that getting a piece of that huge pie should be of top priority.

One of the reasons why you would find thousands of jaded fans across Europe. What they always thought was theirs, teams tucked away in their own towns or cities, all of a sudden losing its local flavor and just bursts into one global corporate circus, shared with non-local fans thousands of miles away. And to add to their dismay, finding out how these non-locals treat their teams, gloryhunters who cling on to the top teams, then drop them like a hot potato when they end the season without any silverware.
