    Philippine Theater

May tumatangkilik pa ba sa Philippine Theater?

And I don't mean the "broadway" or "foreign" plays na iniistage dito sa Pilipinas a. I'm talking about FILIPINO PLAYS written by Filipinos, performed by Filipinos for the Filipinos.

Rolando Tinio, anyone? Nick Pichay? Floy Quintos?

    Curious lang ako. :3

    since binuhay na ang bangkay...
    I mean, ang thread;

I think it depends sa subject matter--at sa artista.
    Bona sold really well.
    So did Caredivas.
Zsazsa Zaturnnah, as we all know, was a hit every single time it was staged

that said, bihira akong makabalita na nag-click na Original Pinoy Theater material na hindi nakakatawa. :/

I'm watching Rama Hari this December. I supported Battalia Royale. BONA was a miss for me so it was heartbreaking.

I believe Philippine Theater is still alive and kicking. It just needs to kick a bit harder.

I did a few local productions before under different directors. Spanky Manikan was my favorite. hehehe

As far as local productions are concerned, LAPU LAPU held at CCP was fun and had a great score ableit magulo. It could have used subtitles hehehe

I won tickets to NTF but was not able to watch a single one. Woe is me.

Still, I have Rama Hari this December. That one I shall not miss.

    Rama Redux

So, has anyone here watched Rama Hari yet?

I was fortunate enough (and bought tickets early) to attend the gala night last November 30. It was great to see so many theater personalities among the crowd, as well as Margie Moran-Floirendo herself, still beautiful after all these years. It was also great to see the Holy Trinity of Ryan Cayabyab, Alice Reyes, and Bienvenido Lumbera being showered with a standing ovation onstage at the end of the performance.

The ballet was fantastic, and there were several moments of wonder and magic. Christian Bautista's voice was clear and powerful; ditto the ever-reliable Robert Seńa. Karylle's dulcet tones, however, were marred by the popping of her mic; a technical glitch to be expected in a first show, but one that I hope they've addressed for the succeeding performances.

The stage itself was minimal, with a geometric, vaguely-70s inspired pattern backdrop against which the action took place. The costumes were rich and splendid, befitting an epic tale of nobility and duty, and the proppings and staging were sparse but clever. Of particular joy to me was the rendering of the final battle with the villain as a shadow play: shades of the Indonesian wayang kulit and the influence of the Indian epic itself across various Southeast Asian cultures.

Of course, it would be heresy to criticize such a revered piece of Philippine theater, but I was just a little put off when the score turned into a fusion of ragtime/Manila Sound when Ravana and his sister Sooparnakha were plotting against the Rama/Sita lovebirds.

I read up a bit on the history of the piece and learned that the change in musical genre at that point in the story was intentional: the initial scenes with Rama and Sita were accompanied by "classic" Tagalog lyrics and music. In contrast to the purity of the leads, the dark forces symbolized by Ravana and his sister were accompanied by the funky 70s beat of the Manila Sound, both in terms of lyrics and music.

I also felt that Hanuman got the short shrift in terms of the story. In the epic tale of the Ramayana, Hanuman is like the third lead, with his own fantastic story. But then again, I suppose there's only so much you can fit into 2 hours. It is Rama Hari, after all, and not The Fantastic Adventures of Hanuman.

Overall, this is a production that should not be missed, especially in this, its second incarnation. And because it sadly, inexplicably only runs till next Sunday, better catch it while you can.

Of course. Marami pa rin tumatangkilik sa Philippine theater. Lalo na mga theater organizations na hindi main stream. Mas okay rin dahil sarili nilang mga sinulat ang isinasadula nila sa entablado.

One time nakapanood ako ng MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG. Si Allan Paule at Ana Capri ang lead roles. Maganda kaya lang mas type ko pa rin ang movies.

The musical Katy! was first staged in 1989 at the CCP, produced by Celeste Legaspi
and starring Mitch Valdez in the lead role, It's also where the song "Minsan Ang Minahal Ay Ako" comes from.
