Cool 33. Has Enrile Finally Redeemed Himself?

Juan Ponce Enrile’s life is storied and can rival any primetime telenovela.*

The length of his political career speaks volumes but his place in Philippine history is somehow made ambiguous by the rather ‘chameleonic’ roles he played:

National Defense Minister during the Marcos Years – EDSA Hero – Alleged Mastermind of Several Coup D’etat during the Aquino Era – Senate President of the Impeachment Court, among others.

    THE TIES THAT BIND

It can be argued that the perceived success and stately conduct of the impeachment proceeding was mainly due to his solomonic decorum and able leadership.

    How will history judge him?

Or is it too early to write a conclusion about him as a man or a politician?

the thought that this man, with one stroke of his gavel could redeem himself, was subliminally implanted in the people's consciousness by the self-serving media. the logical answer is that no, we can never really know if history will be kind to enrile precisely because we do not have any idea on how future historians will view him. remember that all his rulings and actions in the impeachment trial are chronicled and will be dissected by future law students and professors. their analyses are very vital on how future historians will present him in books. take the case of erap estrada. many thought that what transpired in 2001 was providential and good for the country. now, even some of the academics who supported his ouster strongly believe that the 2001 incident was a big mistake.

History is written by the victors...

By then we'll know how history will treat him.

from F. Marcos to BS Aquino Enrile is just consistent in his actions, a dyed in the wool supporter of Dictators and a TraPo.

No, not even close imo. I respect the man...at his age he can hang in there with the sharpest of them pero no, just no.

Nandyan pa yung nahuling video a few years ago na kasama siya ni Erap.

AFP* Enrile: once a cunning trapo, always a cunning trapo.

The billions he "earned" in government is much more enormous compared to that of CJ whom he convicted.

He never was made accountable for the murders they committed during marcos dictatorship.

    A wolf in a sheep's skin.

indeed. What an utterly shameless way to end a long political career. Tsk tsk tsk.

IMHO no, if he will sign the waiver then I might change my mind.

Enrile cannot withstand half the scrutiny Corona withstood.

He has too many skeletons in the closet or other places.

sample mo na ang port irene ....

enrile is OK. Whatever grave sins he had committed against the country in the past must be completely forgiven. he already paid for those in full because he did the country a great favor by spilling the blood of hundreds of leftist ne'er-do-wells.

Joker is still a freedom fighter. He is fighting for the freedom that could be at risk this very minute because the people have unwittingly handed to one man, almost absolute political power.

He is well aware what absolute power can do, even to the most pious.

it is naive to believe that enrile has redeemed himself. the media that is saying this is too gullible and superficial.

if some believe that he redeemed and rehabilitated himself, then this is proof that as lee kuan yew said, filipinos are a soft, forgiving people and that is why we are backward and poor.

ayaw ko kay joker i think he's a hypocrite.

but you can't take away that he was a genuine freedom fighter against marcos. but there were many who are not as well known who fought as hard against marcos.

i like to believe you but then HELL NO. hehe

he failed big time during erap's impeachment. dramatiko ang loko.. pero nung mabuksan ang envelop at walang incriminating evidence against erap, naka mute uli siya. ni hindi naghingi ng sorry. lol! buti pa si cory lol!

sa panahon ng walang habas na pangungurakot ni gluerya.. have you heard his voice? naka mute uli siya. he saw no evil at all. lol!

wala siyang panindigan. i disliked enrile then - kasi maka marcos nga ako lol! pero para sa akin.. he has redeemed himself. kunsabagay, kanya kanyang paniniwala naman lahat ito lol!

^i dont think political butterfly si enrile as compared to my idol ateng miriam lol! after marcos, parang consistent siya. he is still affiliated with erap, hindi niya ito iniwan.. di tulad ng karamihan ngayon lol!

si d joker naman.. ito ang biggest disappointment of em all.. from freedom fighter to the defender of the corrupt lol!

    Not in my book!

I had high hopes he would redeem himself-- given the way he conducted the impeachment trial. But we've been had. Sabi ng lola ko, "In the end, Enrile chose to see the doughnut and not the hole". Wise talaga lola ko.
