Precisely. Play the game because you've got nothing to lose. In fact, whatever the results are, use them the best way you can. Joining doesn't mean you will let your identity as a university be completely determined by what the rankings say. Instead, treat this as an objective reflection of how others possibly see you, knowing fully well this is not the only lens by which you can be viewed.

Exactly. you gather data to improve your business, regardless kung may QS or wala. You also provide data to CHED/Congress/Malacanang because of legal and regulatory requirements. UP has no obligation to provide data to a flawed surveyor like QS.

Sure ka na 2011 data ginamit nila, I wonder how they obtained the data? Anyway, the past UP admin had released its stand on this THES-QS survey. I-google mo na lang ulit.

okay, i just thought it's funny and pathetic for a rank #62 to adopt a prima donna attitude about the QS rankings, kahit pa may allegations of flawed survey methods.

  8. #68
^ I think it is only the fans of the rankings that are making a big deal out of this flawed survey. So sad no?

My issue is not so much with anyone not joining, but rather the reasons for not joining. There is no significant cost for joining, and you can probably learn something from it. Why shy away from the opportunity?

I'm not quite sold on the flawed methodology argument. Many methodologies are not flawed. They're just designed to measure different things.

Anyone here know how QS conducts its survey on academic peer review?

One of my parents teaches at the Ateneo. In 2007 and 2008 the VP of Loyola schools sent an email to all faculty members to visit the QS website and accomplish the survey sheet on academic peer review posted there. The email goes on to say that perception about the school is important hence the need to participate in the survey. So, if any Juan, Pedro and Lucas goes there in behalf of Tayabas Bible College that school gets all the marbles?

Can someone tell how this methodology is different from the way they choose the barrio queen during annual barrio fiesta.

If thats what the QS methodology is all about then I can understand where Dr. Roman is coming from.

At very least, QS should lessen the weight on perception indices and replace with something more tangible say school accomplishment and output for the year in review.

If the Ateneo VP did send out an email asking faculty to answer the survey because they needed to hedge on perception, then I think she had the wrong motivation. I find it distasteful.

you missed the point. besides, ikaw ang na-ban sa isang thread talking about the same topic.

don't get me wrong,i love UP,too.di ko yan ipagpapalit kahit ano pang rank nyan. pero ayoko ng arrogance at sa flawed methodology argument na yan na parang UP lang ang marunong gumawa ng surveys.napakairresponsible at napaka-typical na Pinoy ang ugali na kapag di gusto ang resulta, sasabihing may mali o kaya nadaya.

  13. #73
^They stopped doing that starting 2009. The email sounded more like a mild "kung puede lang naman" rather than anything else.

Ateneo did come out on top that year so she sent an email thanking the faculty members for their support.

The response was meant for ubemench.

The peer review assumes that those who accomplish the survey sheet provide honest, accurate and unbiased responses. kahit taga Ateneo ka,alam mo naman siguro ang lamang ng UP sa Ateneo and vice-versa. academic peer review yan.expected ang highest degree of professionalism. the importance of perception was emphasized in the email but it was never stated that they should indicate ateneo's lead over UP and other Philippine schools, regardless kung naniniwala silang totoo o hindi.

  15. #75
^ True that. But I guess we will never know how those faculty members who did participate responded...a good number of course earned their degrees from UP.

What cant be avoided is that there will always be a perception of bias which consequently imputes flaws in the methadology.

So anong arrogant dun. It came from your mouth, not UP.

If ranking came out of suspect data and flawed methodologies, what learning can you get out of it? Anong policy, procedures, actions ang kailangang baguhin ng UP as a result of that flawed survey?

I don't know that a priori, data is suspect and the methodology is flawed.

I also don't believe UP needs to think right away it has to change anything/something just because it's joining a survey (if UP decides to do it). And "if" ever UP decides some change is necessary because of the survey, I won't speculate since that would depend on what UP thinks it has learned from it.
