MANILA, Philippines – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday arrested a man who posed as Vice President Jejomar Binay just to extort money from business tycoon Lucio Tan.
Suspect Vimbi Flores Avilla allegedly sent a text message to the office of Tan last May 22 and introduced himself as Binay.
He asked Tan’s office to deposit P300,000 to Banco de Oro savings account number 6570090622 as donation to the JC Binay Foundation.
Tan’s office then called Binay’s daughter and executive assistant, Marita Angeline Binay-Alcantara, to inform her about the suspicious text.
This prompted the vice president’s daughter to call for the NBI’s assistance.
NBI then set up an entrapment operation, leading to the arrest of Avilla and cohorts Jericho Guzman Felix and Gabriel Balingit dela Cruz at the Banco de Oro España- dela Fuente branch in Manila.
Binay confronted Avilla at the NBI headquarters.
"You have used my name at least twice already, and even when I was still Mayor of Makati," Binay told Avilla.
"Dapat nang matigil ang mga gawaing ito. These individuals pretend to be government officials in order to swindle people out of their money," he added.
Avilla had been arrested for posing as Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon and Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang last year.
