Post 2nd USA Warship SOLD to Philippines also stripped of Guns

    http://ph.news.yahoo.com/2nd-us-wars...054005685.html

I can't help but at this, pathetic, RP bought ships and USA sure enough sells it.. stripping it of weapons!

Washington has turned down Manila's request to retain the entire weapons system in the second US Coast Guard cutter the Philippines is acquiring from the United States.

Top Filipino military officials flew to the US last weekend for the ceremonial turnover on May 23 of the 378-ft USCG Dallas in North Charleston, South Carolina.

According to Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, the second cutter will also have most of its weapons removed as happened with the first cutter acquired from the US by the Philippine Navy last year.

In the case of what is now the BRP Gregorio del Pilar, all its weapons were removed except for a 76-mm Oto Melara automatic cannon.

In a meeting in Washington on April 30, Gazmin personally asked his counterpart, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, to keep the USCG Dallas in its original state and to restore the weapons that were removed from its sister ship, the Gregorio del Pilar.
The Gregorio del Pilar is currently the biggest and most modern warship in the Philippine Navy fleet which still relies on World War II-vintage vessels.

Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff General Jessie Dellosa and Philippine Navy Fleet commander Rear Admiral Jose Luis Alano will take possession of the Dallas during a symbolic turnover on Wednesday.

The vessel will be renamed the BRP Ramon Alcaraz, after the World War II hero and former fleet commander, and will be under the command of Navy Captain Ernesto Baldovino.

In April 1942, Alcaraz was commander one of the Philippines' three torpedo boats that shot down three of nine attacking Japanese fighter planes.

After the turnover, the Philippine Navy crew will undergo training before they sail the ship home to the Philippines.

the main point of the article is that USA would charge more for the Warships if it included its weapons

dapat nito consider na bumili sa iba namang countries such as UK, japan, sweden.

gusto ng US eh bilhin yung ikakabit na armas sa warship. its that how they treat allies? friends daw

Even with the guns complete, it is still not a warship, never was. It's just big a Coast Guard vessel. Ipinipilit lang natin for Naval use/role.

I think they stripped the guns in the hope that they will win contracts to refurbish/re-arm the vessel later.

dahil abnoy ang presidente natin at baka ipagyabang nanaman just like what happened in Panatag shoal. Parang bata na may bagong laruan na gusto agad matesting. Isusubo pa tayo sa conflict. Our neighboring countries, including our allies like the US know through communiques the foreign policy of our existing administration, including of course, the courses of action (if any) of "The One".

Mali nga na sabihing "warship" e. USCG cutter lang to.

It still needs US congressional review for those additional weapons and sensors. There are still WHECs in USCG service. Those need spares. The US Coast Guard is also not the most well funded of the armed services.
Philippine defense is the responsibility of Filipinos. Why don't we spend on our own replacement radar and equipment?

The thing that a lot of people forget is that the removal of the equipment actually simplifies the transfer for the PN. It speeds up the transfer AND stand-up process. Adding weapons lengthens the process and prevents us from benefitting immediately from its use. PF15 for example was patrolling and in the face of the Chinese within the first month of it being in-country. Right now what we need are ships at sea providing a presence in the area the Chinese are claiming. If we elect to up arm the Dallas now, it will be months before we receive it and years before it is combat ready. Unfortunately for us, we are fighting this "war" with the equipment we have. From the looks of it, the PNs plans are two fold - getting equipment we can use with a minimum of training for our immediate needs while acquiring newer, more heavily armed ships for the future.
