Do foreigners see the BEAUTY in us that we FAIL to see or CHOOSE TO IGNORE?

Tamad (lazy). Mga Magnanakaw (thieves) ***** (dumb). You've heard all these and WORSE words used to describe filipinos... by fellow filipinos! Yes, as Jim Paredes writes, there is such a thing as Pinoy exceptionalism-except we think we're EXCEPTIONALLY BAD see: http://jimparedes.tumblr.com/post/10...shall-overcome

Let's face it. We get down on our own ethnicity. How many times have you heard: Pinoy kasi? Or “Only in the Philippines!”

Do you think this is mentally healthy to do? Is this a form of MENTAL SLAVERY?

What do you think this type of mentality teaches to our children?

The truth is Pinoys, given the right incentives, can and DO OUTPERFORM. Case in point, in Canada, Canadian officials (not pinoys themselves but actual “native” canadians, officials at that) are SO IMPRESSED with Pinoys that they say a future Canadian prime minister will be of Pinoy descent. No joke. Proof = http://www.bassettlawyer.com/canadia...pinoy-descent/

Sure, you may think the Philippines is a sh*t hole at times, but don't let it rot your faith in our people. It is not the country's resources that make it rich, it is the PEOPLE.

And I argue... that we are ALREADY RICH. We just don't know it. It takes FOREIGNERS telling us how good we are for us to even acknowledge our inherent goodness.

    Sad, no?

    What do you think?

Naku maraming galit sa Proud to be Pinoy dito.

Pero tama ka. If you read the Peace Corps volunteer blogs here in the Philippines, you'll see how they see our country from their perspective.

    http://www.peacecorpsjournals.com/?C...65&full_page=1

You can check out also this guy's video blog about the Philippines. Imagine an American volunteer worker in Basilan (of all places) and Cotabato and feels like he's just walking around Luneta.

"The problem is simple, when everybody's speaking negatively about a place, bad things happen...no investment, no jobs, poverty and violence. But the solutions are just as simple. When people start to speak hope over a place, believe in the best of a people, look for the positive...good things happen. Investments come in, people have jobs to feed their families and they're too busy working from 9 to 5 to commit violence. If you want peace in the Southern Philippines, stop exaggerating and speaking negatively and start proclaiming what you want to see here. Start looking for the positive aspects and highlighting them instead of sensationalizing everything for drama's sake. Come and see for yourself, this is a great place." - Jeremy's Motour

I think Pinoys in PI don't notice our own talents and are too busy doing nothing to promote our own talents, looking up at foreign countries who, in turn, look up at our talents. or kung may promotion mang nagaganap, ay pilit sumasakay sa achievements ng ibang tao

even a Saudian paper acknowledged that if there aren't any Pinoys in KSA, they are in deep sh*t.

or we could say that since Pinoys in PI are in their home, they can sh*t around all they want, without care for kapwa Pinoys, but if they are abroad, behave sila well, most of the times.

Everyone does that, not just Filipinos. Americans are critical of their country and their people. They keep comparing themselves to Canadians. Canadians are jealous and insecure of America. They want to be Americans. Americans want to be Canadians. Canada is one of the friendliest countries in the world, but some Canadians think Americans are nicer and more genuine. True story este just my opinion

I'm proud to be what I am. I'm glad I picked a country to move to where Filipinos are most welcome. Canada is all about ethnic diversity. Without immigrants, it won't be the Canada that we know today...

    From http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story...ve-pinoy-roots

Canada minister: Next Canadian Prime Minister may have Pinoy roots
    May 3, 2012 1:00pm

As more Filipinos have chosen to make Canada their home in recent years, a Canadian official said it was not impossible that the next Canadian Prime Minister will have Filipino roots.

According to a news release of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Jason Kenney, Canada's Minister for Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, "extolled Filipino-Canadians for what they have brought to Canada and recognized the possibility of Canada being led someday by a Prime Minister of Filipino descent."

The DFA said Kenney made the statement during the launching of the "Tinig Pinoy" Internet radio at Parliament Hill last April 27.

"Tinig Pinoy" is an Ottawa-based radio program bringing the latest news from the Philippines, updates on local community developments, timely interviews, and Original Pilipino Music (OPM) to Filipinos overseas.

Founded by Dan de Castro 20 years ago, Tinig Pinoy has gone global with 24/7 programming via internet radio at www.tinigpinoy.net.

Kenney said "Tinig Pinoy" was a step forward in the growing presence of the Filipino community in Canada.

"No other community typifies the Canadian values of hard work, responsibility, respect for traditions and family values more than Filipinos," Kenney said.

Meanwhile, Canadian foreign minister John Baird also lauded Filipinos for their contributions to their adopted homeland.

"We are fortunate to have a large and vibrant Filipino community helping build a stronger and more prosperous Canada," Baird said.

He noted that Filipinos have "built a reputation as some of Canada's most active citizens."

For his part, Member of Parliament and Co-Chair of the Canada-Philippines Parliamentary Friendship Group Kevin Lamoureux cited the role of Filipino workers in the health, manufacturing, and hospitality sectors.

Lamoureux also acknowledged the Philippines as Canada's top source of temporary workers.

For his part, Philippine Ambassador to Canada Leslie Gatan said the presence of Baird, Kenney and Lamoureux in a Filipino community event demonstrated the strength of the two countries' friendship. - VVP, GMA News

All this negative talk about one's own country and one's own people stems from an egotistical need to proclaim one's self as better than the rest of his countrymen. That's why when some self serving nut goes on a high horse about "mga Pinoy kasi" he points out Pinoys' bad traits which of course doesn't include him.

    Nagmamalinis.

Is it mentally healthy to think this way?

Are you abusing your children by teaching them to hate themselves and their culture?

Not really. They just gather around with like minded and self serving Pinoys and pat each other's backs and give each other reach-arounds assuring themselves that they are faultless and the rest of the Pinoys are monkeys.

Mentall healthy? no, as it is the same as harboring "inggit"

unfortunately though, when a kid (child or teen) is presented two things, a local traditional barong and a coat and tie for instance, they would deem the coat and tie more formal than a barong. I don't think this is inggit, this is more our culture imo. that's what they see everyday anyway, bihira akong makakita ng male newscaster na naka barong afaik, same for female newscasters wearing a traditional saya. baduy daw kase

Like most of my non-asian friends, nagagandahan sila sa black hair and black eyes, ako naman gandang ganda sa blonde hair nila at blue eyes.

So I am guilty of that.

The kings of Philippine media are worthless piece of crap.

Yung mga palabas lang na makabuluhan are those shows about traveling the Philippines.

My initial thought exactly! Kala ko EXOTIC na usapan!

@ real topic - My ratings from foreign colleagues/clients are relatively higher than that of local colleagues/superiors. Could be a result of more and/or less expectations from the feedback provider.
