about having LBGT characters, there has been open characters like Batgirl ... and Voodoo of wildcats being bisexual. I know in stormwatch, Apollo is gay too

as for Marvel, you got Northstar

anyway look at this youtube video... you'll find who's gay http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An79RrJJYD0

to add: they say he's an iconic character who would be coming out, not already out
    so it would beast boy?
dont forget the lesbian couple who reared Rogue during her teens: Mystique and Destiny. (disclaimer: the original comic book storyline is totally different from the film version so dont get confused. mystique was rogue's foster mother in the original storyline.)

"Chris Claremont’s original idea was for the lesbian couple Mystique and Destiny to be Nightcrawler’s biological parents. Mystique would have shapeshifted into a man to impregnate Destiny. This idea, however, was deemed too controversial by Marvel so an alternate origin story was developed where Mystique was tricked into having sex with the demon Azazel and accidentally got pregnant, after which she murdered her own husband and tossed her newborn child into a river. As you do."

well what do you know, Marvel is always one step ahead from DC when it comes to social issues. So when DC went on a publicity spree to out a prominent superhero, Marvel amps up the game by having the superhero Northstar wed on a same-sex ceremony in no less than New York. hahahah, its crazy.

    --------------------------
Marvel Comics announces ‘X-Men's’ Northstar to have same-sex wedding
    -------------------------------

Marvel Comics announced Tuesday that the “X-Men’s” openly gay member, Northstar, will propose to his boyfriend in “Astonishing X-Men #50”, which hits stores Wednesday. It’s the latest in a trend of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender-friendly storylines in the medium.

The pair will make it official in the next issue, in a same-sex wedding in Central Park that has a who’s who of super heroes on the guest list. Northstar, aka Jean-Paul Beaubier, already became one of the first openly gay super heroes in mainstream comics, having come out in a 1992 issue.

"When a major comic publisher like Marvel not only includes, but publicly celebrates, the legal wedding of two of its gay characters, it reflects how supporting same-sex couples has become the new normal," said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "Readers expect to see their realities portrayed in these fictional worlds and today that includes married gay and lesbian couples."

Marvel senior vice president and exectutive editor Tom Brevoort says the company was planning Northstar’s nuptuals long before President Obama’s move on same sex marriage earlier this month.

“The real event that put the qustion on our radar was a year ago in June when New York state legalized gay marriage,” says Brevoort. “A lot of our Marvel super heroes live in and around New York City so it just immediately became an issue we started thinking about."

Marvel’s bombshell news comes just days after Dan DiDio, the editor in chief of rival DC Comics, made the cryptic disclosure at a London comic convention that one of DC’s characters would soon bust his or her way out of the closet. The secret identity of the gay hero will be shrouded in mystery until the company unveils it next month, but its not expected to be one of the publisher’s top tier that includes Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman.

There, however, is already an openly gay crime fighter patrolling Gotham City — Batwoman — who has her own ongoing series.

The real pioneer of this latest wave of pride, though, is none other than New York’s own Archie, says Mike Cotton, editor in chief of the iPad magazine, Champion!

In 2010, Archie Comics opened the doors of Riverdale High School, the stomping grounds of comic books' favorite teen and his friends, to an openly gay student — a first in the seven decade history of the character.

“I think every one saw how much attention was drawn to that story, which was a really bold move for a kids comic,” says Cotton.

But don’t expect diversity to make any huge leaps in a single bound, he cautions.

“I think it’s very unlikely you’ll see Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America come out because of the licensing deals, the toys, all of that stuff that goes along with those characters,” he said.

I don't think Batman will be outed as gay in the near future. Batman is DC's cashcow and i don't think DC will do anything to change his current reputation.

Actually there is a gay Batman and gay superman, Midnighter and Apollo of Stormwatch. Look it up

@ender, I know what you mean. All those Batman toys might not sell anymore. Parents might get upset and panic.

On the other hand, we also read that the main motivation for DC to make some of their characters as gay is the money motive, not the social justice motive. So that means that pink money will eventually force Batman to admit his feminine side.

pink money? money from the LGBT group?

Pink money is the term used for the fact that LGBT people are DINKS -- double income, no kids. Thus, they have lots of disposable income to buy things and go to movies.

i didn't know that... thanks for the info

it occurred to me... does the iconic major dc character have to be a superhero?

    how about villains?

Not a DC character, but I vote for The Hulk!!!

Hulk SMASH.... out of his closet!!!

But then she was repackaged as an out lesbian. Robin is clearly a bottom. So, the, er, er, big question is who is Batman? heheheheh

All three, by the way, live in Gotham City, which, as you all know, has just legalized same-sex marriage. The City of New York encourages that its cultural institutions, even its resident comic heroes, support the gay policy of the city.

DC is testing informally in gay media which would have more traction -- Robin or Superman as Batman's love interest.

Eeeeew...parang kadiri yung mga drawings na ipinost nyo, I can't imagine! Even if Batman and Robin isn't really my favorite characters in DC, I wouldn't want to ruin their image that way.

@SirZap, no hindi pwedeng villain. Gay = villain? Yikes, paano naman maging politically acceptable yan if DC is desperately trying to make a political statement in support of gender equality?

For a very long time, Batman has been rumored to be gay (hehehe, parang real person din, may rumors din). And I think DC wants to out him already. But they are worried about the implications on toys and other spin-off franchises, plus the effect on panicked parents. But marketing experts must be currently deep in the issue and a decision will be announced in due time. My only problem with Batman being gay is that Robin is too small and young. They have to make Robin bigger and older, para di malaki ang agwat.

Of the major heroes, Batman is the most dispensable to the gay side.

    @Ateo

But the main demographic for the DC products are young adults and young male adults to be specific.

Naggegeneralize lang, gay people will most likely spend their money on fashion than save on a new batman collectible toy.

eto ang reason kung bakit sa tingin ko hindi magagawa ng DC na badingin si Batman.

masyado na established yung storyline niya. Robin or Flash is my best bet.

side note: allow yourself to watch this documentary for the first 6 minutes and you'll end up finishing the whole docu.
