Why the Philippines is in Deep Manure
In a forum in Makati last Thursday, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino himself admitted that two years into his presidency, he still considers himself a “student” of governance.

Yet he takes pride at how his administration, through good governance, has enhanced the country’s fiscal health and generated confidence from investors.

WTF! What data is he reading? How can he say the country’s fiscal condition is in the pink of health enough to generate investors’ confidence?

According to a polling firm run by relatives, self-rated poverty rose to 55 percent, or an estimated 11.1 million Filipino families nationwide considering themselves to be poor, up from the 45 percent recorded last December 2011.

It also reported that 45 percent or 9.1 million families rated themselves poor in terms of food, higher than the previous survey rating of 36 percent or 7.2 million families recorded last year.

And why the rise in the country’s poverty incident? Maybe because according to the same survey firm, unemployment in the country had hit a “record-high” 34.4 percent in the first quarter of 2012, translated to at least 13.8 million Filipinos being jobless.

The 34.4 percent unemployment rate is 10 points more than the 24 percent or 9.7 million jobless Filipinos recorded in December 2011, surpassing the previous record of 34.2 percent in February 2009.

Noynoy even tried to hide the worsening poverty incident in the country from the foreign delegates to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board meeting by placing giant billboards advertising Philippine tourism to hide the squatter shanties lining up the road taking 4,300 delegates from the Manila international airport to the ADB meeting and the hotels where they were billeted.

So, where is the investors’ confidence Noynoy has been hyping? If there is indeed investors’ confidence, then why is there the rise in unemployment? Maybe he’s right, there is confidence but no investment.

And how healthy really is the economy?

Wasn’t it that before he assumed office, the country experienced nearly 40 quarters of uninterrupted economic growth amid the worst postwar global recession and that it was only Singapore’s 8.8 percent in 2007 that topped the Philippines’ 6.6 percent real GDP growth.

In 2008, Thailand and Singapore trailed the Philippines’ GDP growth of 4.2 percent. In 2009, all economies contracted except Indonesia and the Philippines; And in 2010, the country’s 7.6 percent expansion beat Indonesia and Malaysia, and matched Thailand.

Unfortunately, this uninterrupted growth came to an end after Noynoy assumed office and after only two years under this administration, growth is down, and poverty, hunger, unemployment and prices are up.

Noynoy claimed that so far his greatest achievement is a change of people’s attitude from apathy to optimism and active citizenship.

From apathy to optimism? But didn’t he reduce the Filipinos to a bunch of mendicants through his conditional cash transfers? In fact, this has been largely blamed by some sectors as the main contributing factor to the rise of unemployment rate.

The government’s CCT, they say, had made people too dependent on mere dole outs.

But then, what can we really expect? Noynoy had already declared he is still is an OJT president. And practicumers are never expected to do well.

Thus, as long as we have this practicumer president, all we can expect are more misery. poverty getting deeper, prices going up, peace and order deteriorating, economic growth slowing down, long-promised infrastructure remaining unbuilt.

Expect us to get deeper in manure.
