'Pag sa sciences or engineering siyempre MS.

Yes, it is a mandate of the Commission on Higher Education for college professors to possess an MA/MS/MEd. It is the minimum qualification to be in a higher educational institution. However, some colleges and universities accept lecturers who are still in the process of obtaining their master's degrees, i.e., have already some masters units. In some instances also, professional experience may temporarily be considered in the absence of a higher degree, especially if you become prominent in your field of specialization, but eventually a master's degree will still be required of you. It is the law.
Personally, I think it is illogical for a person to aspire to be a figure in the academe if he/she doesn't value lifelong learning, knowledge mastery, and knowledge generation--values and ideals instilled when pursuing higher degrees.
@TS
Dapat talaga may masters degree..
most viable option for the TS is to take his/her master's degree and try his/her luck in getting into smaller schools and colleges.
The following is based on the 2003 UP Faculty Manual.
In U.P. there are currently four ranks for faculty: 1) instructor, 2) assistant professor, 3) associate professor, 4) full professor. Each rank has several "steps". In addition, there are two types of appointments, temporary and tenured.
An instructor is given a temporary appointment which is renewed every year. He/she is nominally a bachelor's degree holder, and in most cases is concurrently enrolled in a masteral course. Instructors are given at most five years to obtain a masteral degree, "outstanding" academic, professional, or creative work. Failure to do so will result in termination (a.k.a "up or out").
An assistant professor must hold a graduate or professional degree. He/she is given three years to publish "academic" works, which are usually articles in refereed journals and gather favorable teaching ratings, after which he/she will be recommended for tenure. Failure to publish ("publish or perish") and/or be granted tenure will result in termination.
An associate professor must hold at least a doctoral degree. Those who worked their way up from the lower ranks usually have tenure by this time. Those who entered directly at this rank are given two years temporary appointment, within which they have to publish, and get favorable teaching ratings in order to get tenure.
A full professor must hold at least a doctoral degree, and have outstanding academic, and/or professional, and/or creative achievements. Again, those who worked their way up from lower ranks usually already have tenure. Those who entered straight into this rank are given an initial temporary appointment of one year, and if renewed will be given tenure.
In practice, however, while the degrees required of each rank are fixed, the quantity and quality of other requirements such as publications, professional and creative works vary from college to college. Another painful reality in UP is that promotions are sometimes tied to the availability of funds. There have been occasions when there were no promotions because the national government did not provide the budget to do so.
Thanks makinao for that very detailed explanation!
Kadalasan, dapat may MS/MA or any graduate course. Pero not necessarily nung pumasok yata, minsan 1 year after pumasok palang nirerequire ang start ang graduate studies.
