"Top local artists lend their voices to PhilPOP
The country’s most prestigious songwriting competition to date gets major star power.
As the final performance and competition night approaches, the Philippine Popular Music Festival (PhilPOP) has announced the artists and performers who will interpret the final 14 songs during the big night on July 14, 2012 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). The roster includes well-known and renowned industry names from various music genres.
YouTube sensation-turned-recording-artist Marié Digby adds an international flavor to finalist Keiko Necesario’s real life-inspired love song “3:00 AM” while former Akafellas member and finalist Karl Villuga gets some help from his former group mates and crooner Mark Bautista for his song “Bawat Hakbang.”
Amateur songwriter and finalist James Leyte gets to perform with reggae ensemble Brownman Revival for his song “Brown” while finalist and alternative pop rock band member Noah Zuñiga fields the tandem of pop star Jay R and Deejay Poblete for his song about unconfessed love, “Dulo ng Dila.” Meanwhile, RnB artist and finalist Thyro Alfaro gathers an all-star gang with former South Border front men Duncan Ramos and Luke Mejares together with hip hop artists Loonie and Yumi joining forces for his entry, “Himig ng Panahon.”
Finalist Krist Melecio’s socially inspired song “Piso” will be interpreted by modern-ethnic pop icon Joey Ayala while Kennard Faraon’s soothing ballad “Slowdancing” will be performed by acoustic singer Nyoy Volante. Alternative rock band Rocksteddy also joins the all-star cast of performers via finalist Byron Ricamara’s upbeat and playful composition, “Takusa” while former Sugarfree lead vocalist Ebe Dancel brings life to finalist Toto Sorioso’s take on the loneliness of performing on stage captured in his song “Tayo Tayo Lang.”
Songwriter-finalist Edwin Marollano teams up with new singer Daniel Grospe for his song “Kesa” while “Negastar” composer and former Metropop finalist Mike Villegas also taps into fresh talent as he collaborates with up and coming artist Cathy Go. For his part, folk rock artist and OPM icon Gary Granada shows how it’s done as he sings his own composition, “Minsa’y Isang Bansa.” Multi-awarded composer Trina Belamide gets help from the all-girl trio Baihana for her jazzy piece “Bigtime.” Finally, hit maker and now Australia-based master songwriter Soc Villanueva’s entry “Kontrabida” will be interpreted by popular actor and singer Sam Concepcion.
The PhilPOP grand prize winner will take home P1 million while two runners-up will each receive P500,000 and P250,000 respectively. A People’s Choice award will also be given to the most popular entry to be decided by texting PhilPop to 2929 for Smart and Sun subscribers.
Incidentally, PhilPop Executive Director Ryan Cayabyab recently announced that the CD containing the compilation of all the fourteen (14) finalists and exclusively produced no less, by Vic Valenciano, distributed by Ivory Records will now be available at all music stores nationwide.
Mr. Cayabyab even added that, “The CD is wonderful. Ang gaganda ng mga kanta! I have never heard anything so uniformly, highly musical in performance. The arrangements themselves are excellent. I believe there will be several hits that will be spawned by this collection. I am thrilled by the fact that these new Pinoy songs are fresh, new sounds with new lyrical concepts, or even if they are not new concepts, the approach is definitely new and the performances of the interpreters are indeed gems! Hindi pa man contest proper, panalo na tayong lahat. This is a major collection and I am very proud to be a part of the Philippine Popular Music Festival.”
Excerpts of the final 14 songs may be listened to online at PhilPOP.com.ph."
