Philpop and Himig Handog PPOP songwriting contests 2012

Have you heard of these two songwriting competitions?

Philpop is like Metropop revived. Metropop stopped in 2003 and is revived as Philpop this year 2012. As expected, ABS-CBN resurrected its Himig Handog this year as well which has also halted in 2003.

been a fan of metropop. I only followed the one in the late 90s as a kid. But I bought the 70s-80s Metropop CDs. Kulang lang ako ng 4th Metropop (1981 I think) kasi iba daw ang record label at wala dun sa binilhan kong record store.

I was surprised about a lot of songs that were products of Metropop like

    - Ang Aking Awitin by Gabriel
    - Minsan Pa by Janet Basco
    - Hahanapin Ko by Anthony Castello
    - Away From You by Jennifer Ramos
    - Salamat Salamat Musika by Nanette Inventor
    - Kailangan Ko Kailangan Mo

    Fave Metropop songs ever:
    - Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika by Hajji Alejandro (1st Metropop)
    - Give me a chance by Ric Segreto (5th Metropop)
    - Ewan by Apo Hiking Society (2nd Metropop)
    - Pain by Martin Nievera (6th Metropop)
    - Bring Back the Times (1998 Metropop - metropop revived)
    - Till I Met You by Kuh Ledesma (6th Metropop)
    - A Smile in Your Heart by Jam Morales (7th Metropop)
    - You're My Home by Odette Quesada (8th Metropop)

PhilPoP is now embroiled in controversy. Two of the 14 finalists were found to have violated the rules. Watch the video here to see the evidence against them. #Philpop Scandal

thank you for posting the link masterbert. nang dahil sa link mo napakinggan ko ang top 14 songs

    Gary Granada's song is nice

i also like slowdancing,3am,dulo ng dila and brown

the latter sounds jazzy, not a popular music genre here in the country but im hopeful na masama sa top 3.

@Jameaux: Yes, I'm the same MasterBert on Philpop's FB page. I'm doing this crusade to let the public know about the controversy. Para kasing masayadong lantaran at garapalan ang ginawa nila.

this competition should be Marketed well to public kasi i know madami pa
ang mga talented song writer na hindi updated sa mga ganitong competitions..

Ang competition now should not all about talent of singing dapat may song writing contest din.

Sana wag mangyari sa Himig Handog ang nangyari sa PhilPOP. Nakakadismaya at nakakawala ng gana kasi. And who wants to win in a competition riveted with controversy. I don't want to attach my name in something like that. Esp. now, everything is recorded for posterity on the internet.

  15. #14
Good luck na lang sa mga PhilPOP finalists na sangkot sa controversy. Your names and deeds will go down in history. And I will make sure people will know your names and reputation. I believe in KARMA!

^you sound so bitter masterbert, ryan c and the rest of the philpop panel already made their decision about the so called controversy. i'm guessing you're entry was not chosen. why not submit an entry to Himig Handog and if you're really that good, you might be chosen as one of the finalists or.. win the title.

and he actually made a theme song for the scandal alone. wow, such dedication!!

anyway, the organizers are setting a bad precedent here if they allow questionable entries to be included. they are simply putting themselves up for failure by setting rules they can't follow.

    My lips are a 25.
I listened to the 14 finalists. Honestly, all of them sound dated (not a single uptempo song) but Slowdancing and 3AM caught my attention.

Yep, those two entries people have been whining about.

Anyway may statement na pala ang organizers:

It has recently come to our attention that the qualification of two of our top 14 finalists are being questioned after it has been discovered that their entries have been “published”, the same having been uploaded in YouTube prior to the competition.

After revisiting the Song Entry and Submission Rules, as published in our website, we found that “publication” is not one of the grounds for disqualification. What the rules require, among other things, are that the song entry must: (i) be entirely original; (ii) not be licensed to any publisher; (iii) not have been recorded before; and (iv) not infringe on any existing copyright or any other rights.

Nowhere is it indicated in the rules that the entry should not have been published.

However, the statements that we subsequently issued in response to queries, unfortunately, deviated from, and expanded, the rules by including “publication” as among the grounds for disqualification. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and for the confusion that our statements have caused, and we take full responsibility for our actions. We are standing by the two finalists because we believe that disqualifying them would create more injustice as we will deviate from the rules.

With this statement, we hope that we can now put the “publication” issue to rest, and channel our energies to more productive pursuits that will reinvigorate the local music industry – the very essence of PhilPop’s existence.

We are happy to announce that the final judging and presentation will take place, as originally scheduled, on July 14, 2012 at the Philippine International Convention Center, with the 14 finalists as earlier announced.

We thank you for your support and understanding. Let us all work together to elevate the state of OPM!

Hi guys. I understand magaganda ang ibang songs. Sana magandahan din kayo sa entry ko which is entitled "Brown" pag narinig nyo na ang full version. What you hear in the teaser is my demo which is a bit different sa final recorded version. Actually, my song is an upbeat mix of folk-hiphop, acoustic-pop. Yung chorus lang ang medyo sumusunod sa beat but the verse parts are kind of an off-beat rap na may stacatto tunes. I hope suportahan nyo ito. Hehe. Salamat.
