First of all, I think that the Americans would have left the Philippines even if the Senate decided to continue the Base Agreement. Pinatubo has largely destroyed the military base and it would have been impractical to renovate it considering that the US already has a base in both Korea and Japan. During that time the Soviet has already fallen as well, so there's no reason to operate a third US base in Asia.

Had Pinatubo not erupted, I would be in favor of having a US Base in Philippine territory. Anti-imperialists operated under the presumption that once the US exits the Philippines, the country can protect itself. Nothing can be farther from the truth. It has been around 20 years since the US left the Philippines and we are still unable to equip ourselves with the minimum military power necessary for our defense. Military power is NOT A LUXURY, ITS A NECESSITY.

Anti-imperialists also argue that the United States meddles too much in Philippine politics. I would argue that while the US did in fact meddle in our politics, our economic problems and poverty are largely caused by ourselves. Yes the US would probably push for their interests but that would happen only if there are conspiring oligarchs in the Philippine government who are willing to. Besides, a state can have a US base while at the same time maintain full autonomy and sovereignty like Japan and Korea. It's so easy for Filipinos to point at another as the cause of a problem without acknowledging that they themselves might be the problem.

Natatandaan ko nung bata pa ako nag field trip kami sa Clark, I remember may nagsabi sa akin na teacher na once pumasok kami sa gates ng Clark, US territory na yun so parang nasa Amerikana rin ako! Nung nasa loob na kami, may nakita akong hangar sa tabi sa may isang field at kitang kita ko sa loob ng hangar eh isang F-15! Napa-WOW! ako! F-15 pare! Natatandaan ko yun mga airman na nag greet sa amin, sabi ko, wow pare, ang lalakeng mga taong ito! Ang tatangkad pa! Tonur nila kami kung saan saan sa Clark. Natatandaan ko tinour nila kami dun sa mga alaga nilang german sheperd tapos nag demonstrate pa ng mga skills nung mga aso.

may mga relatives kami nakatira sa loob ng base. he's a US Navy. sinama kami sa school, i was 8 i think, nainggit ako gusto ko din mag enroll dun. puro puti andun, andun yung feeling na parang wala ka sa pinas.

sa village naman, dun ko nameet first crush ko - yung twins.

now, sa kitchen dept ng workplace ko, marami silang mga pinoy na nakapunta ng US dahil they worked at the base before.

Haha back then Subic was one big S&R. Groceries and dry goods imported from the US were everywhere. The last time I went back to Subic, S&R already had more imported goods than Duty Free.

Unfortunately I was not given the opportunity to enter Clark Airbase. However I'm a nostalgia nut and basing from the pictures I have gathered throughout the years, Clarks really seemed like a little US in Philippine soil. Even the villages look like American suburbs and the schools look exactly like how schools look like in the US. Neither Fort Bonifacio nor Ayala Alabang can replicate such an American "flavor" similar to Clark
