FYI, he was part of the training pool during the 2010 World Championships and the question mark with him is his maturity not his skill set. Besides, there is one thing that Mcgee will bring to any basketball team especially during international competitions and that is shotblocking and rebounding.

In international play McGee's penchant for grabbing rebounds and clearing shots while the ball is still on above the cylinder (the ring) is perfectly legal. Its only in the pro leagues where these are considered as goaltending violations.

That said, having him may still not be enough for us to win a medal. What we need are bigger guards, during the last FIBA Asia Jordan had 6'4 and 6'5 bulky guards in their backcourt while we countered with 5'9 JV Casio and 5'11 (with his shoes on) Chris Tiu.

don't deny it, madali hanapin iyung mga lumang thread mo

the height and heft problem is now more pronounced sa mga guards natin, we have 6'7-6'9 forward centers and 6'4-6'5 small forwards. mapa FilAm or pure pinoy man. we can't expect to guard a 6'3 or 6'4 point guard with a 5'9 point guard.

plus our outside shooting continues to be a problem

    doon lang..
if Asian supremacy ang habol, tingin ko kaya.
from 2007 fiba asia 9th place finish.. umakyat ang Philippines sa 4th place last year.
it is because of the smart gilas program.

4th place finish sa fiba asia, tinalo nila kahit yung jordan. then sa jones cup, tinalo nila once yung iran. what more kung pro (PBA) players plus mcgee..

though syempre, height is might pa rin sa basketball. sa FIBA asia last year, leading scorer and rebounder ng liga si douthit who is 6'10.

So?

  22. #60
my_2_cents: Could you share your stories, then, sir, on how to initiate a national sports program?

SMART GILAS is privately initiated and AFAIK, privately funded. MVP can do with his money what he wants, and I find it hard to imagine us doing any better without the program. We cannot expect our Asian neighbors to remain stagnant, and I think the fact that we can keep up with tall teams with NBA players like Iran and other Arabian teams is a good sign.

The Asian basketball scene is not the same now as it was during the times of Caloy Loyzaga, Samboy Lim, or even of Allan Caidic. Heck, even the international scene is different. USA is not a sure-ball winner of Gold anymore. They lost the 2004 Olympics and had a tough fight for the 2008 gold.

I understand the (to be honest, simplistic) POV that we should concentrate on sports that don't require a lot of height, but it's not like we can pull athletes out of basketball and make them play something else. It would be nice if High School sport clubs for sports not called basketball were more active for example, but it's not like SMART GILAS is preventing that from happening. It's just trying to make the most of what we currently have: An oversupply of basketball players.
