namakyaw din ako ng singko nung college...
But i think i did well naman sa board exams...

Job-hunting wise, a lot of companies doesn't even look at your grades. They only look at the top of your TOR, which is the name and seal of UP.

Me mga interviews din ako, tinatanong what happened bakit andami kong bagsak. Ang sagot ko is, "at least di ako sumuko". I had collected all grades, except DRP. So naamaze sila kasi your spirits we're not affected with your failures.

    Not necessarily true.

Anyway, I think I'm the perfect specimen for this thread

Sa mga nakakakilala sa akin sa PEx, they can vouch for my story.

I took BS Chemical Engineering in UPD years ago. I graduated from a science HS so I was (1) cocky to think I can do everything (2) out of control since stepping on UPD is like being released from jail (dahil everything goes at diskarte mo ang paiiralin which is quite the opposite of what I experienced during HS (3) a stupid carefree teenager who doesn't know how to prioritize his stuff

    Long story short, I got:
    1. A lot of 5.0's
    2. Couple of probation
    3. Almost getting kicked out of Engg (humagulgol ako sa harap ng Vice Chancelor for Academic Affairs para lang di masipa sa Engg)
    4. another 4 years to finish my course (tawag sa akin ay magna )

After graduating, I applied to a lot of companies and I think I never failed any of their pre-employment exams. I even got an invitation to P&G since apparently I aced their exam (but of course I got rejected eventually due to grades) but I failed in the interview process because of my mediocre TOR.

That was really expected but I kept on trying, until I got accepted to work in a manufacturing plant in Pasig. Pay was not that great but at least I was grateful that my boss accepted me despite of my grades.

When I got my 1st paycheck, I realized how hard to earn money. At an instant, nag-flashback lahat ng kagaguhang pinaggagawa ko nung college and I swore to myself to never screw up again.

While working, I studied hard for the board exam. I mean HARD. I studied for 14-18 hours for 2 weeks straight prior my board exam.

And it paid off. I topped the board exam.

By then, it was easier applying for a job.

Eventually I got hired in an Oil and Gas firm, stayed there (and did very well) for two years and decided to go abroad.

Right now, I'm here in Korea working as a design engineer. I say that fate has treated me well ever since.

Heto ang payo ko sa iyo:
    1. FOCUS on your studies and studies alone at iwasang magka 5.0 sa TOR ulit. While I can't say if you're following the same path as I did (being bulakbol), you're going to thank me later for it.
    2. That said, having 5.0 is not the end of the world for you. Having the benefit of being in your shoes, a failing grade is just a stumbling block for you on your goal. Your success will totally depend on how'd you learn from it.
    3. The industry can be forgiving in some of your setbacks. TIP: when you graduate, do very well in pre-employment exams. While it won't tell them (the companies) everything, it's a gauge of what you can do as an engineer. If ever they see your failed grades, try not to overly justify why you got that but emphasize on what you've done after you got yout 5.0s.

    Hope it helps

@iamlakwatsera: Thank you for your reply. Inspiring siya. As to what you said about dropping-- yeah, I agree. I don't want to ever drop a subject. I'll fight 'til the end and attribute my success and failure to my own deeds.

@Dacs: Thanks, Dacs! This is perhaps the most comprehensive answer I have received for this thread-- which is what I wanted all along! Well, hindi naman ako nagbublakbol-- which just makes it hurt more to get such grades since I actually tried hard. And now, kinakabahan ako since I plan to join my first org (or orgs ) in order to increase my exposure and to know more people. I live in the dorm and my studies force me to head back to the dorm right after classes-- boring, I know. The loneliness sucks. It dawned on me a bit too late that good grades alone won't keep me company, haha. I just hope I can balance acads with org responsibilities. I'll keep what you said in mind, Dacs. And I'll keep returning to your post once in a while. Thank you very much!

Anyone else with comprehensive stories regarding my topic? Feel free to post your stories and experiences

dalawa lang pala 5.0/failed mo sa college ako nga more than 10 subjects failed ko mga around 30 units yata yun tapos graduate pa ako si di kilalang university(Our Lady of Fatima University) pero nagwowork ako sa BPI(Bank of the Philippine Islands) ipasa mo lang yun exams and interview balewala na yung transcript =)

  7. #27
Sa simula lang yan. Since you are from a good school, ang pinakadifficulty mo na lang is pag nag-apply ka ng trabaho at may nakasabayan kang tagaUP din na walang bagsak. Siyempre ang kukunin yung walang bagsak, assuming all other factor are equal.

Make a good impression on your job interview. Have a ready answer (yung pamatay) in case you are asked about your grades - ipakita mong nahirapan ka pero nagsumikap ka pa rin. Magandang trend yung mababang GWA sa umpisa, tapos unti unting tumataas (not numerically, of course).

The only point na titingnan ang TOR mo is during the job application, at malamang yung HR lang makakakita nun and not your boss. Afterwards, makakalimutan na rin yung TOR mo ang you will be judged according to your performance.

Of course, this should not give you the license na magbulakbol.

    Kudos to Dacs!

Pero yon basta UP grad ayus na!!

  9. #29

una, companies would not even bother to look at your grades.

pangalawa, your application does not only include an exam but also some behavioral interviews as well.

third, when you start working, your IQ is a factor but what is bigger is your emotional intelligence. i see a lot of cum laude's magna or suma, which fail on the latter part.

    hope this helps.

  11. #31
Or kahit maging maganda lang ang performance mo sa exam will do.
    - Impress your bosses on your interview. Di ba sabi nga nila "First Impressions Lasts"?
    - Improve your social, emotional and communication skills. Malaking factor yan kasi dyan malalaman kung effective ka nga bang katrabaho or empleyado.
    - And lastly: Do your best habang nagtatrabaho na.

may epekto siya pero not totally naman. yung ibang companies e school ang tinitingnan and your capacity to do the work they want.

korek. a number of companies na inaplayan ko, ganun ang napansin ko eh hehe... kaya wag ka kabahan kung kasabayan mo ay cum laude ng kung saang school. they'll still consider you

  14. #34
oo naman! take it from me. what matters is you plan your career very well. tiyaga ka muna sa umpisa basta good work experience ang magain mo. plus factor rin if you have good communication skills and you must know how to sell yourself. but dont be too arrogant. swabe lang dapat. sino bang magaakalang nasa research and development ako ngayon? samantalang patapon lang ako nung college. hehehe. dito lang naman kasi sa pilipinas tinitignan ang grades eh. sa abroad di nga tinignan ang TOR ko eh. technical interview ang mahalaga dun.

  15. #35
May lima akong bagsak nung college.

May special consideration daw pag top schools. Sell yourself very well. Don't be too defensive but highlight your strengths.

Tapos kung di talaga masyadong ok yung performance nung college, huwag munang masyadong choosy sa first job. Seek one that will give you a lot of training and knowledge.

*sigh* I just wish they could see that some people have values and work ethic that transcends their somewhat mediocre performance on paper stained with grades from subjects that are difficult yet unnecessary in doing the essential functions in a workplace setting. My past is gonna haunt me come graduation O_O

Though it's good to know that some companies REALLY DO PREFER UP students for their internship and employment programs. They said so themselves during their lectures and through their booths
