Of the 104 players granted direct acceptance into the main draw of the men's singles, two of them have a protected ranking (Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas and Germany's Benjamin Becker). Ivan Ljubicic however will not be taking part in the 2012 French Open, the Croat having decided to retire from tennis after his first-round defeat this week at Monte Carlo.
World No.1 Novak Djokovic will be looking to secure his first ever French Open title, and having won Wimbledon and the US Open last year and the Australian Open in January 2012, the Serb is on course to hold all four Majors at the same time and achieve a Grand Slam over two seasons.
Rafael Nadal will be attempting to stop Djokovic and also to become the first player in the history of the event to win seven men's singles titles at Roland Garros. Roger Federer meanwhile, who lost last year's final, will be looking to extend his record haul of Grand Slam titles to 17.
Among the French players, world No.5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is the highest-ranked player, followed by Gaël Monfils (No.13), Gilles Simon (No.15) and Richard Gasquet (No.18). Six other locals have been given direct acceptance, namely Julien Benneteau, Michaël Llodra, Jérémy Chardy, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, Nicolas Mahut and Benoît Paire.
The men's singles draw will feature 128 players in total, with remaining slots taken up by 16 qualifiers and eight wild cards.
In the women's draw there are also two players from among the 108 with direct acceptance who have benefited from a protected ranking – Hungary's Agnes Szavay and Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky. Two other players will not be taking part – Belgium's Kim Clijsters who is suffering from a hip injury, and Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru who has a problem with her right knee.
World No.1 Victoria Azarenka from Belarus will be looking to win her second Grand Slam in a row after she opened her account at the Australian Open back in January. Maria Sharapova is right behind her in the rankings, and after making the semi-finals here last year, she will be keener than ever to add a Roland Garros title to her long list of achievements.
Five French women have been given direct acceptance into the main singles draw, with Sharapova's fellow 2011 semi-finalist Marion Bartoli heading the list at No.7 in the world. She is followed by Pauline Parmentier (No.59), Stéphanie Foretz-Gacon (No.80), Virginie Razzano (No.99e) and Alizé Cornet (No.100).
The women's singles draw will feature 128 players in total, with remaining slots taken up by 12 qualifiers and eight wild cards.

With the way things are going at the pre-tournaments, I see a resurging Serena Williams as the favorite to win her second FO crown. Victoria Azarenka can give her a challenge for the title. Maria Sharapova and Agniezska Radwanska will surely live up to their rankings, while I see Angelique Kerber and Ana Ivanovic mixing up the women's draw. Defending Champion Li Na and finalist Francesca Schiavone, given their slumping forms may fall at the early rounds.
Roger Federer can add up a second RG crown with a consistent performance come the QuarterFinals and SemiFinals. My second pick would be Novak Djokovic to complete his career Grand Slam while defending champion Rafael Nadal will surely be a force to reckon with. Andy Murray looms as a contender, but I don't see him winning it. Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro have outside chances to break the Big Four come semifinals.
The main draws will be announced on Friday, May 25. First round matches begin on Sunday, May 27.
Wala pang host for FO 2012?

Basta, rules are rules.![]()
Rafa will defend his FO title and continue his dominance on clay. I think he's regaining his confidence against the Joker (with his recent win against him in Rome). Plus, there's no Kryptonite Blue clay in RG.
Though on the other end I don't see the one-hit wonder Li Na repeating.
Where's everyone? I hate to open the Fantasy League when there's not much buzz around here!![]()
