HARD-HITTING newspaper columnist Ramon “Mon” Tulfo and TV/movie actor Raymart Santiago, along with the latter’s body guards, figured in fisticuffs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport yesterday afternoon.

Initial information gathered from the office of NAIA Media Affairs Office chief Connie Bungag said the incident happened past 1 p.m. at the arrival area of the NAIA Terminal 3.

The fistfight was reportedly triggered by an argument between Tulfo and Santiago’s wife Claudine Barretto.

Tulfo said Barretto was berating a personnel of the Cebu Pacific Airlines over her luggage that was left behind at the Caticlan Airport.

He told airport reporters that he was taking pictures of Barretto on his cellphone when a group of men approached him wanting to take his phone away. When he refused, the men ganged up on him prompting him to fight back.

The columnist said he did not recognize Barretto although she looked familiar to him.

“Nag-sympathize ako sa kanya … ini-offload kasi ‘yung bagahe niya. Minumura niya ang pobreng babae na mangiyak-ngiyak, ipatatanggal daw niya sa trabaho … kinunan ko siya ng retrato sa cellphone, gusto ko sanang sabihin na ‘cool ka lang … ’yang babae wala namang kasalanan sa iyo ba’t mo minumura nang ganon,’” he said.

It was at this instant that Raymart saw Tulfo taking pictures of Claudine and tried to take away the cellphone.

Claudine said she was just complaining about her luggage which contained her children’s medicine and was surprised when she saw Tulfo taking pictures of her.

She said when Raymart confronted Tulfo, the columnist punched her husband.

Claudine said when she tried to come forward, Tulfo kicked her twice and pushed her towards the counter. She denied hurling invectives at the airline personnel.

She said Tulfo, whom they did not recognize initially, threatened them.

“Hindi niyo alam kung sino ang kinakalaban niyo kaya matakot kayo,” Tulfo reportedly told the couple.

Raymart said he was merely protecting his wife and children who were traumatized by the incident.

Witnesses who asked not to be identified said they saw Tulfo hit Raymart first.

Tulfo said he was merely defending himself from the eight men who ganged up on him. He said he is contemplating to file charges against the couple and their bodyguards.

The Santiagos said they would consult their lawyers.

As this developed, Tulfo’s younger brother Erwin who is also a veteran journalist, yesterday challenged Raymart to a “one-on-one” sans arms or bodyguards.

The younger Tulfo’s challenge came after learning of the NAIA incident involving his brother and the Santiago couple.

“Masyado nang matanda si Kuya Mon para sa kanya. He’s 65 years old. Walo sila, mag-isa `yung kapatid ko. Ako na lang ang harapin niya I’m ready for him anytime, anywhere. Siguraduhin lang niyang magpapakita siya!” an obviously angry Erwin said.

Erwin said his brother had to get stitches and his face got bloated from the blows he received from Santiago’s group.

He denied allegations that his brother kicked Claudine twice.

“Kung dalawang beses tinadyakan ni utol ’yung babae, eh di sana naospital na ’yun. Wala sa bokabularyo namin ang pumatol sa babae,” he said.

Erwin said Claudine may have hurt herself during the commotion.

Airport authorities said they have already preserved the CCTV footage of the incident.

there's always 2 sides in every story....i think there are several moral lessons in this situation...first of all, physical/verbal assault is not the solution to anything...all the curse words in the world will not let your luggage magically appear if it was misplaced/left somewhere...i think people should remember that the person they are dealing with may not be the one directly responsible for the mishap that happened in another place...also, you have to learn to control yourself in public....in this case, celebrities have more responsibilities because they're public figures...one move and the world knows what they did...i also think that some celebrities/politicians have that sense of entitlement that separates them from the other "people of this world"...they think that just because of their so-called power, that they can get whatever they want..well, wake up call, go somewhere outside of the philippines and you'll see the real world...as for the media, they should learn about boundaries and respect...if he wanted to help the attendant, he could have talked to claudine about it...his first action shouldn't be to take a picture/video of the incident..genuine concern for the person being abused means you stop it from happening right away...and to those security people, way to go-they can't handle a fistfight? and to think that this is airport security...kinda makes me scared to go to naia...i won't feel safe :s

Wakeup call na din dapat ito sa mga airlines particularly Cebu Pacific na iaayos naman nila ang palpak nilang serbisyo. Lagi na lang may ganyang insidente, sensationalized lang ngayon kasi mga sikat na tao ang involved. Naranasan ko na rin ang mawalan ng bagahe kaya kahit sino maiinis talaga pag ganun tapos may tao pang sumasabay sa init ng ulo kagaya ni Tulfo kaya hindi rin masisi ang mag asawa kung napagbalingan sya, sa kayabangan ba naman nun nakakairita talaga.
