State of denial

Hiding poverty and not eradicating it seems to be the priority of Philippines President Benigno Aquino. This indigestible truth is evident from the putting up of advertising hoardings to hide slums from about 4,300 delegates attending an Asian Development Bank meeting. A number of organisations, including rights groups, have condemned this execrable act that must also be termed shameless as it is an attempt to deny the existence of rampant poverty in the country and hence an insult to the poor.

That poverty is widespread in the Philippines cannot be denied. A quantum jump in poverty was witnessed during the reign of the late Ferdinand Marcos, who was intent on enriching himself at the cost of the people. Since then poverty has only increased steadily under various governments for a variety of reasons. The result was that hundreds of thousands of Filipinos went abroad to work – in the Gulf countries, Taiwan and other nations in the region – resulting in a brain drain. Though the export of manpower checked poverty to some extent, it refused to go away since more and more people joined the queue of the poor, the result of a malaise caused by political and sociological turmoil that none of the governments from the late 1980s could prevent. An example is the rule of the late Corazon Aquino. Though her intentions were good, she was never stable enough to rule effectively due to an endless threat to her government from coups and rebellions. All the presidents afterwards rarely ruled without some kind of turbulence. There is the case of Joseph Estrada who was ousted by Gloria Arroyo. The hyper ambitious Arroyo in turn faced new problems. Besides chronic political instability and volatility, all the presidents had to contend with two insurgencies. The Moros as well as the communist New People’s Army have spearheaded enough violence that has killed thousands over the past few decades. Worse is the failure of successive administrations to end these insurgencies through negotiations. In fact, at times, the Moros and Manila have been close to accords during talks at Kuala Lumpur, mediated by the Malaysian government, but the attempts to achieve peace were stymied by elements with vested interests. Ending these insurgencies, especially the one by the Moros might have changed the face of the Philippines. Mindanao, the homeland of the Moros, which is rich in natural resources, would then have been exploited fully.

Only a decisive occupant of Malacanang Palace can bring peace and prosperity to the Philippines. When aquino became president, after a period of turmoil and uncertainty under Arroyo, there were hopes among many Filipinos that things would change. That has not happened so far. And it seems that the Aquino may not be any better than many of his predecessors as he is beginning to sink into a state of denial about the true and pathetic state of affairs in the Philippines. Appalling, no doubt.

Gutom sila both ways. Pero mas mabubuhay sila sa pinanggalingan nila. Tamad lang kasi at ayaw magtanim at magbanat ng buto. Akala namumunga ng pera mga patay na puno dito sa Maynila at nagsipuntahan dito. Ayon, pagdating dito, wala rin pala at lumala lalo sitwasyon nila. I agree! Reminds me of my relatives sa father side ko. Despite of having good businesses in camanava, yung bahay nila nasa camanava din, madumi, mabaho. Though I would say, legally acquired yung mga bahay nila but I know they can afford living in a house sa mga good communities or subdivisions . Pero dahil sa malalalayo sila sa negosyo nila, they prefer na doon na din mag-tayo ng bahay.

Pero sa probinsiya namin sa Quezon, mala-palasyo mga bahay nila.
