is a star, not because of the fact that she has a remarkable screen presence; not because of her numerous top-rating shows and blockbuster hit movies; not because she possesses the superior looks and talent that befits her title as one of the best actresses in the Philippines right now; not because she has a tremendous and loyal following-fans, admirers, and even actors- who share in delight while watching in awe her every move.
Claudine Barretto is a star simply because she shines. When an actress joins the glitz and glamour of showbiz, she has to be aware of three important things. First, she has to realize that she’s not the only one actress in a galaxy-full of celebrities. Second, she has to remember that there’s going to be another actress that can do what she does, sometimes, even better. And third, she has to accept that fame isn’t guaranteed at all times throughout her career.
I Claudine Barretto isn’t an exception to this mantra. When a twelve-year-old Claudine entered the fickle mind of showbiz, she didn’t bank on her illustrious last name to win a slot in the widely-popular ‘Ang TV.’ Instead, she used her mom’s maiden name, Castelo during the screening process. At that time, the industry was already brimming with talents at her own age: Jolina Magdangal, Gio Alvarez and the likes.
Not to mention Claudine’s older sisters Gretchen and Marjorie already occupied the scene and the screen. But luck seems to be in Claudine’s path. Years of dedication and drive earned her much better breaks, including her career-defining lead role as the rich heiress Via Pereira in the grand soap opera Mula Sa Puso, touted as one of the best drama series to be aired in Philippine television.
But Claudine would eventually prove that she’s no run-of-the-mill actress. Eager to prove her versatility. She essayed the roles of triplets Rosario, Rosenda, and Rosemarie in the phenomenal Saan Ka Man Naroroon, and Angeline and Angelina in the hit Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan. Because of these, she deservedly earned the title ‘Teleserye Queen.’ No doubt, Claudine was clearly on her way to superstardom.
Rivalry is an inevitable part in showbiz. It is both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes, actresses are pitted up against each other because they’re sisters, or just because their fans want them to. But on Claudine’s rivalry case, she was pitted up against Judy Ann simply because they’re the best actresses of their generation. As previously stated, an actress must realize that she’s not the only person in the industry who can do what she’s capable of. And it fits perfectly for Claudine and Judy Ann.
Although Juday started her career earlier, Claudine’s phenomenal rise and newfound superstardom status eventually leveled the battlefield. Alternately, they eclipsed each others’ careers, and up to this day, they remained locked in a battle-who’s got higher salaries, who’s got more awards, whose shows rated higher, whose movies did better at the cinemas, and even who’s got the thinner body-the list seems endless.
If Claudine was the romantic heiredera, Judy Ann was the dainty probinsiyana. While the other was helpless, the other one was outspoken. And if Judy Ann was the great superwoman, Claudine was the ethereal mermaid. That, along with numerous roles, their respective careers benefited from each other. The statement wasn’t composed to further fuel their rivalry. It was merely done to stress that there are other actresses in these industry. Actresses are being discovered every day.
And the faster she rises to stardom, the faster her career goes maligned. But as it seems, no matter how may actresses turn out, nobody can ever rival Claudine’s multi-faceted personality. Consider this. In today’s showbiz, Claudine’s distinct characteristics are scattered and distributed among much younger stars. Angelica Panganiban’s flair for contrabida roles is reminiscent of Claudine’s ability to portray darker characters.
Empress Shuck’s gut-wrenching acting, Kim Chiu’s phenomenal rise to fame, Bea Alonzo’s flawless roles in romantic genre, Anne Curtis’ class and elegance and Marian Rivera’s ability to cause sudden intrigues – put them all together and you’ll have Claudine’s complex personality. III. The third and last thing she has to remember is that fame isn’t guaranteed at all times. When Claudine shifted her priorities from an full-pledged A-Lister to a full-time mom and a a doting wife, her career experienced a slight backdrop.
In a span of months, her career took a backseat in favor of her newfound domestic life. But Claudine was full of surprises. Staging a successful comeback in 2008, she generated her acting chops and made audiences stop and stare once more, as she took on the role of the vivacious Catherine dela Rhea in the major hit Iisa Pa Lamang, ultimately proving that like fine wine, she just gets better as she age.
And a few months back, she raised eyebrows and stirred controversy as she, the reigning queen of her home network ABS-CBN, transferred to rival station GMA7. She’s been called a lot of names, and monikers. She’s been an alleged primadonna, a notorious and cheating girlfriend, an inconsiderate actress among others. But all these are behind her now. She’s now the Optimum Star, the Star Magic Queen, the Teleserye Queen and the Queen of Drama.
People love to hate her, but these things actually prove that people just can’t get enough of a Claudine Barretto. With an optimum career, she’s proven her fixture on the fickle-minded audiences. She’s better than ever, and there’s no stopping her. With a star shining so bright, you can’t just miss her in a galaxy-full of stars. Clearly, Claudine Barretto is here to stay.
