RIGHT TIMING.
"Naniniwala ako na this film will make their career.”
May energy, e.
“I think because si Elmo is aspirational.
ilang dalawa? Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin," sagot ni Direk Mac.
“Noong ginawa ko yung Let The Love Begin [2005], pagkatapos kong gawin, I felt comfortable.
“I wanted to protect Richard and I wanted to protect Angel.
“It was a very simple story pero hanggang ngayon, yung Let The Love Begin was the highest-grossing film ng GMA Films.
“Pero ngayon, may dagdag—singer itong mga ito [Julie Anne and Elmo].
"Isang namana sa isang icon at isang from the ranks na kailangang mapatunayan.
“Isang pagpapatunay na mahirap kasi, hindi siya ang nanalo sa contest.”
Ang tinutukoy ni Direk Mac ay ang pagsali noon ni Julie Anne sa singing search ng QTV 11 na Pop Star Kids (2005) hosted by Kyla.
Finalist lang noon si Julie Anne at ang tumalo sa kanya ay si Rita Iringan, na napapanood ngayon sa One True Love ng GMA.

Elmo & Julie AnnE keep it real

‘FOREVER”—the word, and the idea of it, is a very big deal within the Julielmo universe, also known as the world of the insanely popular love team of Julie Anne San Jose and Elmo Magalona. “A season can change your life forever” is the tagline on the poster of Just One Summer, the GMA Films presentation now in theaters that is the first big-screen test of their pairing. The tagline might as well describe the goal for their fans: An eternally happy-ever-after for Julie Anne and Elmo.
In real life, though, forever can be much harder to reach. For starters, Julie Anne says she doesn’t actually know if there are boys actually courting her. “Kung may nanliligaw nga po sa akin, I don’t know. I don’t think anyone has sent any feelers,” she jokes. “As for me and Elmo ending up in real life, sa akin po, if it will come, it will come.”
Let’s just say fans take news about Julie Anne and Elmo personally. They flood social-media sites with messages about how they want to see the two Kapuso stars together in real life. Do you remember just wanting to be single and free at their age? Elmo and Julie Anne are both 18. The frenzied interest underscores how blurry the line is between the Julielmo public persona and the reality between these young actors.
****
Julie Anne and Elmo are being launched via GMA Films’s teen-oriented romantic drama Just One Summer, which has been rated B by the Cinema Evaluation Board. It follows the story of Nyel (Magalona), a rich rebellious boy all set to study abroad—but not before he is “coerced” to spend the summer with his estranged father in the family farm.
Meanwhile, Beto (San Jose) doesn’t know how to tell her father that she didn’t get the college scholarship they were expecting. To save some money for her studies, Beto lands a job in the farm owned by Nyel’s dad. The two turn to each other, escaping from the realities of their life, and, not surprisingly, romance blossoms—until Nyel and Beto have to make choices that will affect their relationship forever. There’s that word again.
A couple of weeks before their movie opened nationwide, we sat down with San Jose and Magalona on location in Subic, Pampanga. The two were in the midst of shooting a number of scenes, among them the big finale in the middle of a tropical storm. Yet nothing seemed amiss. In fact, the two seemed relaxed even after enduring hours and hours of shooting.
They smiled and joked with the other cast members, the crew and the members of the entertainment press the film’s PR outfit had invited. Elmo stretched out in a chair beside Julie Anne, and the two occasionally finished each other’s sentences and even looked at each other if one was unsure of an answer.
Their chemistry is definitely there, perhaps evolved already since the film is their fifth pairing (the rest have been on the small screen, including the top-rating weekly soap Together Forever on GMA). The two first met on Party Pilipinas.
At the time, Elmo had been invited to perform as a tribute to his late father, rap icon Francis Magalona, while Julie Anne was just an upstart breaking away from tween girl group Sugarpop that she had formed with the other contestants of now-defunct singing contest PopStar Kids. As an experiment, Party Pilipinas execs paired the two in a couple of numbers that quickly evolved weeks later into a recurring series of musical vignettes called “Red Mask Trilogy,” plus even more musical numbers as a pair on the top-rating Sunday variety show.
Kapuso viewers went wild over the tandem and the GMA management took even more notice, pairing them in a number of TV shows, including Andres de Saya, Daldalita and, currently, Together Forever. Their pairing was a constantly trending topic on Twitter and received nominations left and right as the “best” and “most promising” love team, sometimes picking up an award or two along the way.
Regarding their onscreen chemistry, Julie Anne calls it as “something that just comes out. We don’t force ourselves into anything. Ang pangit naman na hindi natural kasi ang dating ’di ba?” Just One Summer director Mac Alejandre says that this may even help explain the Julielmo magic. “What you see is what you get when it comes to Julie Anne and Elmo,” says Alejandre, a veteran of rom-coms and youth-oriented films. “Whether they’re singing or doing a scene, people think they’re not acting, they think all that is real because Julie Anne and Elmo are such naturals.”
In fact, when Alejandre said this, he had just wrapped a dinner scene with his two leads. It was a short scene where the two uttered not a word of dialogue, but even after Alejandre shouted “Cut!” Julie Anne and Elmo stayed on the set, continuing to talk, oblivious of the propsmen already clearing the area to set up their next scene.

‘Elmo? Giving me treats? He doesn’t even give me chocolates!” discloses Julie Anne when asked how sweet Elmo is to her. But before Julielmo fans whip themselves up into a frenzy, she is quick to add, “Because he knows I don’t like sweets! In fact, he’s very thoughtful. Like last time, he gave me a complete jewelry set. It’s very nice and it had an orange theme because he knows it’s my favorite color.”
Despite knowing her favorite color and then some, Elmo is still being accused by some fans of not being loyal to the love team, linking him to actress Lauren Young.
Elmo finally speaks out about this issue: “Lauren and her sister Megan are close to my sisters Max [Maxene] and Saab. People see all of us, even with their other non-showbiz friends, and they assume that Lauren and I are an item. Truth is, we haven’t even gone out, like, just the two of us. Close ako sa family ko, everyone knows that, kaya nagiging close din ako sa friends nila.”
Issues like this have hounded the love team, but they have learned to take it in stride. In fact, the two have weathered a lot of storms in doing Just One Summer—figuratively and even literally. Recently while dubbing some scenes for the movie, Elmo and Julie Anne got stranded in the studio and had to stay overnight because floodwaters had left the streets impassable.
Because of this shared experience, Julie Anne and Elmo have vowed to be more active in helping flood victims. In fact, the two took a break from promoting Just One Summer to participate in the recent GMA Telethon to raise relief funds. Furthermore, a portion of the film’s box office would go to the Kapuso Foundation to fund more efforts to help.
“I know it sounds cliché but it really makes you feel good to help others. ’Yung you know that you can do something to help and make others feel better,” says Elmo. “This isn’t the first time that we became involved. My family and I would do our own fund-raising activities for other disasters. We also help in any way we can with the GMA Kapuso Foundation, and that’s true also with Julie Anne.”
****
It’s tempting to attach greater meaning to the comments and actions of Julie Anne and Elmo in response to kilig questions. But that day in Subic, the two were already feeling somewhat wistful as their shoot was coming to an end. What lessons have they learned from their characters, we asked. Julie Anne is first to answer: “Beto is a very practical girl who knows what she wants. But the most impactful thing I have learned from her actually comes from her father, who tells her that while love matters, there’s a proper time for everything.”
Elmo marvels at how Nyel’s character, despite his angst and everything that has happened to him, still values his relationship with his family. “I guess the lesson that I have learned from him is to honor your parents no matter what, because it’s the right thing to do.”
And both feel that the one way to honor parents is for children to do well in their chosen endeavors, even if that means making some sacrifices. “I think our careers would progress even more if we focus on it and not mix it up with our personal lives,” said Elmo. “Julie Anne and I are comfortable with each other. Wala na akong hahanapin pang iba sa kanya but I don’t think anyone can say na dapat maging kami.”
Julie Anne adds: “Our friendship has become deeper because of this. I am close to Elmo and this movie has made us even closer than ever.”
“What’s nice is that when people say we have chemistry onscreen, it’s not because we’re forcing anything. It’s not like we have a different persona for the screen and for our fans. We’re not that type of entertainers. We can’t say that it’s already us tapos ’yun pala hindi. We don’t want to be fake. That’s what my father also taught me. To always be real. And I agree with him. Because at the end of the day, I’d rather be myself,” concludes Elmo.
hayyyy.. feels good to be inlove... reel or real... as long as they are both happy.. and enjoy what they are doing....
More than 500 days of summer
By Tim Yap (The Philippine Star) Updated August 18, 2012
MANILA, Philippines - It goes without saying that Julie Anne San Jose and Elmo Magalona are both very talented performers. Ever since Elmo debuted at the NU Rock Awards (the year his father rap royalty FrancisM passed away) onstage alongside rock god Ely Buendia, you knew right then and there that a star was born. Julie Anne San Jose, on the other hand, bloomed right in front of our TV sets, singing song after song, and nailing it with a precision so ahead of her tender age.
It was director Rico Gutierrez who christened the tandem via his ongoing “stage musical on TV” segment in Party Pilipinas. Entitled Wazak the Musical, Direk Rico, alongside his collaborators, put together hits of the Apo Hiking Society, Eraserheads and Gloc 9 and weaved it into a Romeo and Juliet love story, casting Elmo as the Pinoy Romeo and Julie Anne as the Pinay Juliet. Needless to say, the fans loved it.
New Heights
From then on, week after week, Julie Anne and Elmo, these twitter trending personalities, continue to soar to new heights. Julie Anne San Jose is on top of iTunes Philippines, the only local artist to continue to dominate the charts while Elmo Magalona is top-of-mind endorser for his age bracket, launching new products and services and bridging them to the youth market.
Their fans, the JuliElmos, are a force to reckon with. Diehard is an understatement as they make sure their idols are given their rightful real estate in the cyber world. Their online efforts have paid off though, as organically online as can be, both their careers blossomed into a whole slew of other TV shows, collaborations, and endorsements. And now, just as their fans requested, a movie — Just One Summer.
I saw the movie during its premiere earlier this week, and I must say, Julie Anne and Elmo deliver fine performances. How did they fare opposite some of the country’s foremost screen veterans? They did well — nope, actually they did very well! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll fall in love with Nyel and Beto and you’ll sing along some parts, too. I am not a movie reviewer so I won’t attempt to do a critique, all I know is that I really, really liked the film. It reminded me of classic Sharon and Gabby films from the 80s — glossy, funny and with characters that a whole generation and beyond can empathize with. Great scenes, powerhouse support cast, and a couple of cows (you’ll know what I’m saying when you see the film) involved, too.
Watch Just One Summer and watch Julie Anne and Elmo grow on you.
