Congratulations Lady Eagles for winning Game 2 of the Finals. Crucial ang third set kasi lumamang ang UST 20-15. Pero nag 9-0 run Ateneo to win the set courtesy of the heroics of Alyssa Valdez and the brilliant setting of Jem Ferrer. Nung fourth set talagang dikitan halos ang laban. Neither team want to give up the set but in the end the Lady Eagles won through sheer desire and fighting heart.
Game 3 is on sunday!

Let's go Team Ateneo!

Please wear blue.
Congrats Ateneo! nice game.
the moment I read the post about the jogging of jinx around the UST campus.
*facepalm* I knew this game would be yours.
The girls need to win the title, seriously. I don't want Alyssa's efforts to go to waste. The girl's working veeeeeeeeeery hard despite her painful shoulder.
Some notes for Game 2:
- They had less blocks in this game, but their coverage was much, much better. Their floor defense worked pretty well. Though Nen had a good number of attacks left unanswered. I'm just a bit disturbed that they left Ortiz without blockers a couple of times in the game. That's basically giving out a free point. And I hope that they'll be smarter in blocking, UST has been using those very acute angles just to avoid those blockers. Puro mga corner pocket spikes ang pumapatay sa kanila.
- Very nice transition defense. I mean, relatively better than the first set last Sunday. They take advantage when there's an opportunity to spike. Love what Fille did in the first set, that second ball play. Si Jem kumuha ng first ball, pero pinalo niya na agad, kahit second ball pa lang.
- The reception was better. I don't know what's bothering Denden Lazaro lately, but she's been very shaky in this series. Laging kabado, tapos sa end ng set pa nagkakamali. Good thing Bea Tan was there to sub for her. That girl has nerves of steel.
- Jem's sets were damn a-w-e-s-o-m-e. Did someone see that kneeling set? How about that perfect back-set, plus the one-hand set to Kesinee? Sometimes I don't get why she's so fancy with her sets (unlike Rhea who's just quietly effective and deceiving), but she's the only one who could pull off those sets.
And I love her leadership in this game. Last game kasi medyo dinaga din siya eh. Her decision-making in this game was somewhat flawless. At ang maganda pa, pag maganda yung laro niya, nadadala lahat na maglaro din ng maganda.
- A lot were requesting for Roces to be fielded in instead of Gretch. Honestly, I don't mind Gretch playing the whole game. Sorry, but Roces is a bit of a non-factor for me. Sure, she's smart, and has a great running spike, but Gretch is much more hardworking when it comes to blocking and digging.
- Kesinee was just on fire. Enough said. Hope she carries it to Game 3. More blocks from her, please.
Props to Ella, too, for being a supersub.
- Fille and Dzi were silently effective. I say silent because they aren't really the superstars in this game but they were really consistent. Both of them had minimal errors, were consistent in their serves, and did well in reception.
- Alyssa is just the real deal. She's so brave and hardworking, not to mention, clutch. Sobrang nakakabilib ang passion niya for volleyball. She was excellent in all departments, IMO.
- I hope they would guard Nen better in the next game. She has been getting away with those quick attacks of hers. She really reminds me of Lek (Surasawadee), same approach, power, hairstyle lol. Backline defense, plus better block coverage pa sana.
Off to Game 3!
Jem Ferrer played spectacularly yesterday. I love how she took it upon herself to calm down the girls and step up as the vocal leader, and that's despite being in the presence of other leaders/veterans as well (Roces, Kesinee). This girl is brilliant, and she's very unassuming about it. Starting to believe what Kesinee told in an interview last year, that she might be the country's best setter.
Yesterday's game could be an entire setting reel for her. Just so many things she did that was beyond words -- or any award for that matter.
Tama, naawa din ako kay Aly dahil yang shoulder na iyan ang matagal ng nagpapahirap sa kanya since her high school days. Pero despite the pain, she continues to play well and carries her team to victory. Grabe, 31 points si Aly kagabi and she's just only in her second year as a player for Ateneo. Eight of her 31 points came from service aces if I'm not mistaken.
Si Jem Ferrer ganda rin ng nilaro. Siya ang glue ng team. If she plays well, malaki ang chance na manalo sila. Hands down, siya ang best setter ng tournament talaga. Kahit hindi maganda ang receive sa bola, she finds a way to set the ball well.
Kudos also to the other players na hindi bumigay especially when the Tigresses led 20-15 during the third set. Nag 9-0 run sila dun that turned the game in their favor.
Anyway, Game 3 will surely be a WAR hindi lang on the court but also off it. Dadagsa ang fans kaya pahirapan sa tickets.
Agree with this, Alea! I don't know what it is about Gretch - she's not the best middle attacker/blocker out there, some would even go as far as calling her a liability - but somehow she manages to pull it off. There are little things that she's doing that may not be apparent to some, but she delivers in ways that no other middles (even the stronger ones) can. Funny little thing, this Gretchen is.
