Huelgas vies in Auckland ITU World U23
Top Filipino triathlete Nikko Brian Huelgas has been selected as one of three Asian triathletes to participate in the ITU World Under-23 and Junior Camp slated Oct. 7-15 in Auckland, Australia.
Huelgas, along with Kazakhstan’s Oxana Grot and Karolina Solovyova, were picked by the ITU (International Triathlon Union) Sports Development Group for their huge potentials among 30 Asian nominees for the camp.
Meanwhile, national triathlon coach and former champion George Vilog was also selected to participate in the camp as a facilitating coach to work under world-class triathlon mentors.
Backed by Century Tuna, the Philippine Sports Commission and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP), Huelgas will also be competing in the Under-23 Elite competition, also in Auckland, on Oct. 20, the same day the 2012 ITU World Championships will be held.
Huelgas finished seventh in the Asian Triathlon Championships in Tateyama, Japan last April.
After Auckland, Huelgas will proceed to Brisbane to take part in a high-performance one-month training camp under coach Dan Atkins. Huelgas will return to the country in time for the Century Tuna ASTC Asian Duathlon Championships (ADC) in Subic Bay in November.

Someone died yesterday in Cebu. May he rest in peace.
Triathlete’s death shock friends, runners
Ramon Igaña Jr. was known to post many photos on his Facebook account so hat fellow runners or cyclists would have something to remember a race or Sunday training run by.
On Sunday, many of the friends he met on the road returned the favor, but sadly.
Igaña’s death during the 90-kilometer bike leg of the Ironman 70.3 shocked many in Cebu’s running community and was the only sad note in an otherwise successful staging of the event. Igaña was 45.
“We were helping (distribute sports drinks) and the last word from Ramie to us at our station was, ‘Moinom ko okay dili na raba magkita ninyo (I’ll get a drink because I probably won’t see you guys again),’” posted Tony Galon, Igaña’s friend in the Ungo runners’ group.
He probably only referred to the flurry of activity in the celebrations expected to cap the race. But it was indeed the last time many of his fellow runners or cyclists would see him.
Igaña competed in the relay event under Team TTB Extreme along with his wife, Dr. Humility Igaña, who was supposed to run the half-marathon, the last leg of the event.
According to a source, Igaña was dead after arriving at Chong Hua Hospital and was being autopsied as of press time.
BJ Odilao, Treat senior rescuer, told Sun.Star Cebu they were initially given a different name (not Igaña’s) when they told the organizers the man’s race number. (A check later, however, showed the number given was, indeed, Igaña’s.)
Odilao said the accident happened around 9:30 a.m. while the cyclist was attempting to get a water bottle from his bottle cage.
The news literally stopped Barangay Tinago councilor Joel Garganera in his tracks. Garganera said he and some of his friends were at the Marian site in Barangay Lindogon and were riding home when he received a call about Igana’s passing.
“Wala gyud ko katuo (I couldn’t believe it). I never thought that it would happen. It’s very tragic and sad,” Garganera said in a phone interview.
He recalled that he was one of those who tried to convince Igaña to run an ultramarathon (a race that goes beyond the full 42-kilometer marathon).
As a runner, he recalled, Igaña was rarely on the road without his wife, and their daughter Nina.
“They were always running happily together,” recalled Garganera.
Fellow triathlete and Ungo runner Rico Dale Petallar said that Igaña had prepared hard for the race starting last February.
“In preparation for the Ironman, he even bought high-end (bicycle) parts to replace his old ones,” Petallar said.
Igaña would often train despite a busy schedule at work. He sometimes practiced by himself, Petallar said.
Petallar, who served as one of the marshals in the bike transition, said that Ungo members were worried that Igaña was nowhere in sight, after most of the other bikers finished their bike leg.
The 90-kilometer bike leg required cyclists to pedal from the Shangri-la in Mactan, up the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, then on to the Mandaue Reclamation Area, where they made several loops before heading to the South Road Properties, all the way to Talisay.
It was in Barangay Cansojong when Igaña, according to a witness, fell and hit his head on the gutter.
His wife and relay teammate, Dr. Humility Igaña, was waiting to start the final leg of the triathlon, a 21-kilometer run in Punta Engaño.
Moments later, she and some of the couple’s friends heard about what happened.
Before the day ended, expressions of sympathy filled the Igaña couple’s Facebook walls. Many shared photos, just like Ramie Igaña used to do.
