FHM 100 Sexiest : Is it Still a Credible Poll?




Every year at about the beginning of May one of the country’s biggest showbiz events starts to unfold. The race for the FHM 100 Sexiest Women has begun, and like every year the fight for the top spot is fierce especially among the women vying for that position.

This past few years the top spot has been very much coveted because of the idea that it seems to be the golden ticket that will push an aspiring starlet and even establish leading ladies to a higher level in their showbiz career. Recent winners has proven this true when Katrina Halili bag the top prize for two straight years. From a struggling actress she suddenly became one of the elite talents of her mother studio. With the prestige of winning the title many doors indeed open up for her.

Because of the immense perks awaiting the winner it is not unusual that this event is eagerly awaited every year by a lot of female celebrities. A top ten ranking is good enough to be notice by movie and TV executives but a title is seen as a passport for a bigger and better showbiz career. And now after another year the voting has again started.

There is no doubt that the women that gets included in the list are all sexy. They all exhibits that body-hugging figure that is enough to cause traffic jam in a busy highway. The thing that I found troubling in this poll nowadays is the question of its credibility. In the past when it was still a new thing there is probably less controversy on whoever wins the title. Nowadays that same assumption can no longer apply.

The poll in my opinion is heavily commercialize and manipulated only by a few group of people. It is no longer the fans who has the power to vote. The people who has the power are those who have the money. If you look carefully at how the structure of the voting you will discover that the biggest way to amassed the most number of votes is through text voting. And when text voting is present, having lots of money is an essential.

There is another way of voting like dropping by their websites, becoming a member and casting a vote that is limited to only once a day. If you do the math that will only amount to 30 votes for a month. There is no possibility of winning if you take this route.

The only way to get included in the list is to vote through text, tons of text. Last year the winner Sam Pinto blurted out that she received at least 7 million votes. If most of this votes came from text which I sure it is and 1 vote is worth at least 50 centavos then an aspiring winner would at least need three and a half million pesos to have a fighting chance at the top spot this year. Seems like a lot of money, but this is small compared to the benefits of winning the title. Because of this the text brigade is always present in this kind of race.

And who are these people who will run the text brigade. They are the following;

The first on my list who will run the text brigade are the celebrities itself. Nowadays the title of FHM finest is comparable to winning a major beauty pageant. The prestige is like having a virtual crown itself. The entire family, friends and even relatives will of course lend their support for the celebrity. This one is probably understandable.

The second group and probably the biggest source of capital for the text votes will be the advertisers. A win from their image model is a sure way to boost the sales of their products that is currently being endorse by this celebrity. It is a free additional publicity for their brand. The last two winners Angel Locsin and Sam Pinto has an ongoing campaign of commercials during the time of the FHM poll. How can we be sure that this huge advertising firms did not use their own money to fund for the votes of some of their celebrity endorsers.

The third group who runs the text brigade are the talent managers. A win will ensure that their talents get an increase of projects which then leads to an increased in their earnings as well.

The fourth group are the TV networks. The idea that a win from one of their exclusive stars automatically merits them with another elite celebrity at their fold. I can see right now a TV network actively campaigning for some of their talents to be included in the list.

There is a fifth group but they are not involve in running a text brigade. I do believe that they encourage it. For me this is the true winner of this event. This will be the publisher of the magazine Summit Media. They of course have a share in the revenues from all the text votes generated by the poll, making them the biggest winner in this event.

Indeed as a fan before you throw away your hard earned money on voting for your favorite celebrity, you better think twice. It is my belief that the voting is no longer in the hands of the fans. It is has become a fight of the advertisers, network and managers. When you summed it up three to ten million pesos to spend for the win seems very trivial to what they can possibly earn in return. Do the math.

Sam Pinto is FHM's Sexiest Woman again

This is definitely more than just sheer luck.

The same time last year, Sam Pinto has set a new perspective for sexiness as she won the title of the FHM Sexiest Woman in the World 2011.


As most people have already expected on this year’s poll, Sam joins the ranks of Katrina Halili and Angel Locsin as one of the prestigious celebrities to win the coveted title twice.

In the partial and unofficial results released last May, Angel Locsin led the poll for two straight weeks as Sam found herself in second place.

But at the tail-end of the poll, Sam rose to the top spot as Angel dropped to second place.



Solenn Heussaff, Cristine Reyes, and Marian Rivera landed third, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively.

Completing the Top 10 are January 2012 cover girl Ellen Adarna; current cover girl Jackie Rice; March 2012 cover girl Bela Padilla; and Kapuso stars Jennylyn Mercado and Lovi Poe.

The numbers were nothing short of staggering at the end of the campaign.

Over 17 million votes, consisting of online, text and print ballots, were generated in this year’s FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll.

This year, it was indeed a battle between the Kapamilya star Angel Locsin and the reigning Sexiest Woman Sam Pinto, as Angel garnered a total of 1,131,505 votes against Sam’s 1,249,189 votes.
