US submarine emerges near disputed shoal
By Jaime Laude Home Updated May 15, 2012 07:11 PM 2 comments to this post

The arrival of Virginia Class fast attack submarine USS North Carolina (SSN-777) came amid a tense territorial standoff for more than a month now between the Philippines and China in Panatag Shoal, a rock formation 124 nautical miles from mainland Zambales.

“The crew is proud of our recent contributions as part of our country’s commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation, peace and stability in the region,” said Cmdr. Richard Rhinehart, North Carolina’s commanding officer, in a press statement released by the United States-Pacific Command (USPACOM).

And China will spin this by saying the US is ESCALATING the tension.

A better example is Britian vs Germany during WWII.

Or perhaps Russie vs Germany, with specific emphasis on Stalingrad.

by Joel on Saturday, May 12, 2012

South China Sea Oil Platform Workers Take Helicopter When Starting/Ending Shift

China’s first independently designed and constructed drilling platform “Ocean Oil 981″ has succeeded in its first drilling operation in the South China Sea. Photographers visited and photographed the platforms’ 160 workers, who are required to work 28 days before taking a helicopter back to land to change shifts. The platform has in total 76 living quarters as well as recreational facilities and a communal kitchen.

The drilling platform is currently 320 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong, and workers on the the platform need to take a helicopter for over two hours.

There are 76 living quarters equipped with bunk beds, private bathrooms, televisions, and telephone and Internet.

The laundry room, which has staff responsible for cleaning clothes.

Oil workers are having a meal, consisting of 14 courses.

Why don't we just push China to take the issue to UNCLOS and let them decide?

If they decide in favor of China, we have to respect that.

If they decide in our favor and China used force to take over the island, the US will have all the reasons to invoke MDT.

I just want to ask, just curious because wala akong alam sa international law.

So when it comes to this kind of dispute, walang jurisdiction ang UN? if YES, so walang silbi ang UNCLOS? ganon ba ka inutil ang UN?

Here's what the DFA has to say regarding PH ownership of Bajo de Masinloc:

Philippine Position on Bajo de Masinloc and the Waters Within its Vicinity

It does mention UNCLOS but it doesn't really say how the UN can come in to decide.

Last I heard PH is trying to bring China to the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea. The little I remember of International Law (way back in college hehe) is that both parties should agree to an arbitration. The same with Bajo de Masinloc; kahit gusto natin maresolba ng UN bodies (like ITLOS, I assume), kung ayaw ng China eh no deal.

IMO, the solution right now is pressure from the international community through active diplomatic campaigning by PH.

Anyone is free to correct me if I am wrong.
