    by historical era

300 - over-the-top fictionalized portrayal of the battle of Thermopylae.
13th Warrior - a fictional story about Vikings
    Mongol
    The Warlords
    Red Cliff
Ten To Chi To - Sengoku period rivalry between Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen
Kingdom of Heaven - historically inaccurate, but a good portrayal of medieval combat
Braveheart - horribly inacurrate, but this film boast probably the best pre-battle speech in cinematic history next to Lord of the Rings
The Last Samurai - loosely based on the Setsuma Rebellion

    Last of the Mohicans
Waterloo - the best movie about Napoleon I. No CGI with thousands of troops in battle sequences.
The Patriot - another horribly inaccurate Mel Gibson film but had good action sequences.
    Four Feathers
Cromwell - ranks along Waterloo and War and Peace as one of the most epic musket films.
    Le Colonel Chabert
    Master and Commander

    Gallipoli
The Blue Max - fictional story about a German pilot
    Passchendale

A Bridge Too Far - portrays the failed Allied attack on Holland. The best WW2 film for me.
    Der Untergang
    Letters from Iwo Jima
Flags of our Fathers - probably the least American-centric WW2 film
    Enemy at the Gates
    For Those We Love
Yamato - I found this too theatrical at times like For Those We Love
    Empire of the Sun
    Patton
Saving Private Ryan - too much American idealism, but portrays realistic combat.
Battle of Britain - forgive the weird German planes though.
Das Boot - probably the most realistic WW2 film.

    Tae Guk Gi
    The Front Line -

    Hamburger Hill
Apocalypse Now - Vietnam War version of Heart of Darkness.
    Full Metal Jacket

    Black Hawk Down

Not big fan of war movies but gotta go with Saving Private Ryan
