"I am very much aware that the common frustration of well meaning alumni who are rich and famous (another clue: yung mga mahilig mag golf) is the issue of exclusivity. Marami na daw ang tao sa DLSU, the net effect of which is: DI MAKAKAKILALA ang mga batchmate unlike in Ateneo.

So, some of these rich and famous alumni want population control, e.g., one section per major, half of which are scholars; and, they do some arithmetic, calculating the cost of such population control at yun daw ang amount they will donate."

DON'T YOU THINK THIS IS RELEVANT TO THE TOPIC.

Thus, when puntafuega's argued that "kung bobo ang UST, papanu pa ang lower ranking schools," there is fallacy. In the first place, walang bobong school (institution), pero may bobong individual.

Pursuing the logic of the distinction between an institution and its constituents, I posited that while Thomasians, in general, are not the best clustered students in the country; but, UST, as an institution that carries its missions in evangelizing Asia and in developing the minds of the Filipinos for 400 years now, is certainly an excellent school.

UST came into picture in this thread as some pexers (e.g., Commoner, puntafuega) were mentioning UST.

Exclusivity? DLSU accepts less than 4,000 / 18,000-20,000 freshmen every year and a little over 3,000 get to enroll. If it's not that exclusive, then I call it outrageous. In addition, it would be hypocritical if DLSU will only be compared to Ateneo considering that we have other great universities such as UP, UST and schools abroad. If you look at the statistics of AdMU and reports say, the Katipunan based school has begun accepting as much as 4,000+ freshmen in the last 3 years.

Whilst you mentioned population control, the problem merely is the area and location where DLSU Manila nestles. La Salle has 11,000 undergraduate students converging on a 13.5 acres soil, having the smallest campus among the TOP 4. How does it compare with UST where you have 42,000 population? AdMU on the other hand has 8,000+.

I don't have issues with the student population. La Salle has a lot more courses compared to Ateneo, so it's understandable if the school has more students. Similarly I think that the admissions process is already quite competitive. Today's DLSU students should still be as smarter, if not smarter, than the la salle students of the 80s or the 90s.

What is urgently needed is both competent faculty members and stricter retention policies. The school has to initiate a university-wide reassessment of the performance of its faculty members, even among its tenured professors.

The school likewise has to impose a QPI (I'd say 2.0) and lower the maximum allowable failed units per year to just 9 units. DLSU students are smart, but most aren't being pushed enough to study harder.

You need both. A QPI is useless if you have incompetent faculty members (marami ka ngang tinanggal pero wala rin natutunan mga natira) and competent faculty members are useless if the students don't study (nakakatamad talaga magturo pag di nagaaral mga estudyante). I have heard that there are ongoing attempts to achieve the former but there's yet to be any news regarding the latter.

Hacksaw if from UP Eng'g. How would someone get into UP Eng'g but not UST?

I think this thread would be much better off without the UST supporters interfering in the discussion, especially if they are not contributing to the topic itself. They're not involved in it, in the first place. This thread tackles about the creme of the crop, or those who usually go to UP, AdMU and DLSU.

DLSU awards college scholarships to 50 public school students

De La Salle University presented yesterday 50 public school students who will receive full college scholarships from the University.

The grant comes from the Vaugirard Scholarship Program, established by DLSU last year to provide 50 scholarships annually for students who graduated from Philippine public high schools. The initiative provides an opportunity for the students to access any baccalaureate degree at DLSU.

Apart from full waiver of tuition, miscellaneous, and other fees, selected scholars will receive a monthly stipend to cover accommodation, meals, transportation, and book expenses.

The Vaugirard Scholars presented were among those who received the highest marks during the college entrance examination conducted by DLSU last year. The University partnered with the Department of Education to encourage students to apply via a free entrance test.

DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Narciso Erguiza FSC hopes to continue the Lasallian mission by developing future leaders of the country. He said, “To help build a progressive nation, our University recognizes the need to support the development of leaders in various fields. To do that, we are opening the doors of De La Salle University to more students who have the potential to be among our nation’s future leaders.”

Irene Katrina Jayme, a scholar from Tuguegarao City Science High School, responded: “College education can cost a lot of money, but our scholarship made everything possible and gave us hope. We shall develop our full potential and be a part of our country’s progress.”

The scholarship program was named after Vaugirard, France, where St. John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the La Salle system, established his first novitiate. His house in Vaugirard became a refuge where the Christian Brothers continued their mission of providing free education for all. —De La Salle University press release

grabe ang mahal ng tuition ng DLSU ngayon, 7 years ago, P35,000/ tri lang ang tuition ng sister ko, ngayon P60,000 na yung brother ko,

pero in fairness, it pays to study here, my sis now earns, P45,000/ month in a bank head office in Makati, and she works 8-4, Mon-Fri. despite being a relatively ordinary new grad.

    so bawi naman.

Bilib ako sa husay at talino ng mga nagsipagtapos sa UP, Ateneo at La Salle yung tipong may "intellectual contribution." Unti-unti na ding rumarami ang mga schools na sumusunod sa yapak ng mga ito.
