The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: April 27 Notes, Scores, & Images
Speeding Bullets:
- The Junior Maroons unleashed quite the surprise, upsetting last year’s Juniors finalists, the FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws. Diego Dario continued to sizzle for UPIS, scoring 18 points on the strength of 3 triples. Raymart Sablan impressed again with 15 markers and 12 caroms to his name. The Baby Tams clearly miss the services of last season’s ace, Jerie Pingoy. Without him, it seemed FEU just couldn’t find the lift to get past the vastly improved UPIS five.
- San Beda wasted no time in ransacking the Junior Altas. The Red Cubs uncorked a 32-point first quarter and just coasted to the major blowout. Javee Mocon and Ryan Gumtang both produced double-doubles for the Bedans, who also had 7 guys scoring in double digits. Looks like this coming season will be the Cubs’ playground again.
- Xavier relied on their dynamic duo of Kyles Lao and Jarrell Lim to upend the Greenies, who were the toasts of last season’s NCAA juniors tourney after barging into the Finals via the backdoor. They weren’t able to conjure the same magic against the determined Stallions, though. Lao and Lim paired up for 45 of Xavier’s 53 points, far outscoring the entire starting unit of LSGH, which produced just 32 markers. LSGH big man Andre Paras also found the going tough underneath as he was matched up with 6’6 behemoth Isaac Go. Paras finished with just 4 points on 2-of-9 shooting.
- The Tamaraws got their 2nd win in a row, beating the Falcons in a tight encounter that may be a harbinger of things to come when these two teams meet again in the UAAP. Thought they were outrebounded, the Tamaraws showed poise, forcing more turnovers from the Falcons, and limiting the Adamson quintet to just 34% FG shooting. Coach Leo Austria’s boys also floundered at the stripe, where they converted a dismal 44% of their 27 tries. Anthony Hargrove finally broke into double digits for FEU with 12 points in just 14 minutes of play. He fouled out, however, and grabbed just 2 rebounds while patrolling the shaded lane.
- The Green Archers drew level in their win-loss slate by beating the Knights. Rookie Jeron Teng wound up leading DLSU with 15 points, though he shot just 3-of-11 from the floor. Both Yutien Andrada and Norbert Torres finished with double-doubles, combining for 25 points and 20 boards. This bodes well for the La Salle frontline, as there seems to be no sign of Arnold Van Opstal at least until the UAAP wars officially begin. The Archers also shot well from the field, connecting on 53% of their field goals, though they kinda balanced it out with a woeful 56% clip from the line, and by committing 17 turnovers.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: April 28 Notes, Scores, & Images
Speeding Bullets:
- The Bullpups are looking like early and imposing frontrunners to defend their UAAP Juniors crown. The returning Raph Atangan remains a consistent offensive options, while RP-Youth standout Hubert Cani and shooter Levi Biteng are looking sharp.
- The Eaglets shot well from the field (57%), but they got buried on the glass (44-30) and were forced to commit 24 turnovers. They surely felt the absence of Gabe Capacio, who is tagged to be one of coach Joe Silva’s main men down low.
- Jeric Diego continues to be the tower-of-power for the Mapua Red Robins, getting another double-double as they scraped past the Arellano Braves in overtime. He could be a legit big man prospect for the Seniors division.
- Julius Armon looks to be the game-changer for the Red Lions this coming season. He has been the most consistent performer thus far for the Bedans, and he is just a match-up nightmare for opposing guards.
- It seems UP still suffers from the same bad habits. They take too many threes, and don’t make enough of them to justify their trigger-happy nature. At least they did play good defense, getting 6 steals, blocking 5 shots, and forcing 11 Ateneo turnovers.
- The Blue Eagle backcourt continues to struggle. Juami Tiongson made 2 threes on his way to a respectable 8-point output while grabbing 5 caroms and dishing out 8 dimes. His backup, Nico Elorde, however, still seems to be adjusting. Elorde committed 4 turnovers against 0 assists. Kiefer Ravena and Ryan Buenafe also had less-than-stellar contributions. The duo combined for just 5 points in 43 minutes of action.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 2-5, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images
Speeding Bullets:
- Former RP-Youth mainstay Angelo Hubert Cani looks to spearhead the NU Bullpups championship repeat charge this season. He’ll do this alongside last year’s Finals MVP, Raph Atangan. They should be the clear favorites this year.
- The Tiger Cubs’ Prince Martin continues to impress. The Cubs aren’t exactly the strongest team in the UAAP Juniors race, but it’s clear that nobody should take them or granted.
- The FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws continue their downward spiral. They lost to a Mapua Red Robins team whom they beat just a week earlier in the FCBL. To compound this even more, Mapua’s star big man, Jeric Diego, didn’t even play.
- Despite the Adamson Baby Falcons’ win over Xavier being impressive, nobody should take this as proof that the Stallions are nothing but flukes. They played Adamson without the services of ace gunners Kyles Lao and Jarrell Lim, as well as big man Isaac Go, all of whom, I can only assume, were probably busy with RP Team duties.
- It’s a bit disappointing I couldn’t find any box scores for the RP U13-Lyceum game, since I wanted to see how Lourdes Mandaluyong star Gian Mamuyac did. He’s tagged as a future star in the amateur ranks, and I’ve heard thru the grapevine that Ateneo has the inside track to getting him in HS.
- The NU Bulldogs look scarier by the day, as they went 2-0 this week thanks to blowout wins over EAC and Benilde. It’s clear that Ray Parks and Emmanuel Mbe are still this team’s leaders, but so many others can light up the board on any given night, too.
- The Bedans remain spotless as well. Like NU, they went 2-0 with impressive wins over Mapua and Perpetual. Julius Armon looks like the real deal, and, coupled with the vastly improved Jake Pascual, he should spearhead the Red Lions’ charge this season. Suffice to say they’ve made Ronnie Magsanoc look really good so far.
- I’m pumped that Gab Banal led Mapua to its first win, pulling the rug from under UP. He shot two treys in this game and showed his versatility by playing mostly on the wings. For a guy who played mostly center in HS, he has really made great strides in transitioning to an effective wingman.
- UE and UP look to be the frontrunners for this season’s cellar-dwellers again. I’d put my money on UE to remain a shade ahead of UP. The Adamson Falcons, meanwhile, looked good in their win over the Generals. Alex Nuyles was aggressive, Roider Cabrera regained his shooting touch, and Eric Camson unloaded a nice double-double. If the Falcons can find some consistency, they’ll be plenty dangerous.
- Slowly, Jeron Teng seems to be adjusting to the college game better than most had expected. He made only one field goal in La Salle’s win over UST, but his accurate touch from the stripe helped him get to his 14-point total. That effectiveness from the stripe is uncharacteristic for a DLSU squad, and that alone may make him one of the most valuable pieces for them this season.
- Had Karim Abdul been healthy and played for the Tigers, he would’ve given Norbert Torres a much tougher time. Alas, his absence weakened UST’s inside presence, and the result was a -17 rebound difference. If Chris Camus were still around, things would’ve been different, but because, apparently, he’s no longer eligible, an Abdul-less UST is tantamount to a Krispy Kreme donut in black and gold.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 7, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images
Speeding Bullets:
- The Staglets showed real strength in blowing the lowly Brigadiers out of their Juniors game. The Baste boys were extremely dominant, shooting 51% from the floor while limiting EAC to just 25%. The Staglets also outrebounded the Brigadiers, 63-20, and played better team ball with 20 assists to EAC’s 10.
- In contrast, the Stallions from Xavier had a tough time disposing of the Tiger Cubs. Kyles Lao played just 12 minutes in this game, scoring 12 markers on 4-of-6 shooting, but he had 0 rebounds and 0 assists. With the absence of Jarrell Lim and Isaac Go, Xavier, once again, had to lean on Juan Susmerano and Anton Lapez to bail themselves out. The Cubs gave a good account of themselves here as Prince Martin showed the way anew. Alvin Ungria also played well, netting a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards.
- The Eagles had a strong start against the Cardinals, but, again, had to ward off yet another comeback from their foes en route to their 6th win in 7 games. Nico Salva finally broke out with 27 markers on 9-of-12 FG shooting and making all but 2 of his 10 freebies. Greg Slaughter won his battle in the paint against Mapua’s returning big man, Yousef Taha. Slaughter tallied 16 points and 10 caroms, while Taha struggled with just 7 points on 3-of-12 shooting. The Fil-Palestinian, however, did grab 11 rebounds. Josan Nimes and Gab Banal led the Mapua effort with a combined 39 points, while Ateneo’s starting backcourt of Kiefer Ravena and Juami Tiongson produced a combined 20 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals.
- In a low-scoring affair, the Pirates used a superb finishing kick to get their first win, this time against the EAC Generals. Cris Cayabyab, Floricel Guevarra, and Shane Ko uncorked a combined 41 points to lead Lyceum, who also prevented any EAC player from double-digit scoring. Noube Happi led the Generals with just 9 points on 3-of-11 shooting to go along with his game-high 15 rebounds. The game was marred by anemic shooting, as both teams combined for a lowly 31% shooting percentage from the floor. - The last Seniors game of the day featured the San Sebastian Golden Stags, who are tagged as strong contenders to dethrone the SBC Red Lions this season. Quite unexpectedly though, they were hijacked by a determined JRU quintet. Nate Matute nailed 4 threes to typify the Heavy Bombers’ resolve. He finished with 15 markers while backcourt mate Alex Almario also stepped up by scoring 22 points, thanks mainly to his almost flawless 13-of-14 shooting from the stripe. Ian Sangalang had a nice double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds) to lead Baste, while Calvin Abueva scored 16 markers and collared 7 boards of his own. The Stags, however, fell behind in the first half and never really recovered. JRU’s defense was the key here, forcing SSC to commit 18 turnovers.

Speeding Bullets:
- The NU Bullpups, typifying the positive results that heavy investment in a school’s program can produce, continue unscathed in 3 encounters. Their latest victims are the MIT Red Robins, who drop to 2-2. Raph Atangan was the Bullpups’ leader in this game, but he received a ton of help from Hubert Cani, Rey Lapiz, and Levi Biteng. It was a tight game in the first half, but NU outscored Mapua 50-30 in the last two periods.
- After impressing in their first win a few days ago, the RP Youth Under-13 team ran into a rock solid OLFU Junior Phoenix that bamboozled them on all fronts. Miguel Cabrera was the backcourt spitfire for Fatima, while the frontline duo of Paul Pineda and Dave Del Rosario just lorded it over their younger and smaller counterparts. Fatima dominated in practically all aspects, outrebounding (62-37) and outplaymaking (19-8) RP U13, as well as forcing 19 errors.
- In the Seniors division, two teams got their maiden wins of the summer, while another team maintained its unblemished slate.
- After sustaining two losses, the CSB Blazers finally broke through the win column at the expense of the Arellano Chiefs. Mark Romero and Carlo Lastimosa combined for 25 points to lead CSB, which mounted a huge 14-point bubble in the first canto that they just had to protect the rest of the way. Benilde was locked on the prize in this game, outplaying the Chiefs on both ends of the floor. Benilde shot better from the field, had more assists, and forced Arellano to a lot more turnovers.
- Not to be outdone, the UP Fighting Maroons also flashed fine fighting form in collaring their first win in 4 games, while handing the Altas their fourth straight setback. The forward duo of Alvin Padilla and Raul Suyod led the way on offense, pairing up for 26 markers. Padilla also displayed improved sniping, making 3 of his 5 attempts from rainbow country. Their efforts were well-complemented by Alinko Mbah, who was a solid defensive force, grabbing 18 boards and blocking 3 shots. Jett Vidal’s 12 points led Perpetual Help, but they were hampered by an atrocious 23% shooting clip from the floor.
- In the main game of the day, the San Sebastian Stags gave the NU Bulldogs a big scare before Ray Parks came alive and led NU’s comeback in the final frame. Baste went into the final 10 minutes up by 6, but a great windup by coach Eric Altamirano’s wards ensured the Bulldogs would remain spotless in the summer league. Parks had another LeBron-esque outing, finishing with an all-around line of 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 dimes, 2 steals, and 2 rejections. Mark De Guzman also gave NU a big lift with 4 triples on his way to 16 markers. Four guys ended up in double-figures for the Stags, but it was all for naught as they absorbed their second loss in as many matches.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 11, 2012 Notes & Scores
Speeding Bullets:
- The Greenies from Greenhills rebounded from their loss to Xavier by upending the UST Tiger Cubs, thanks mainly to the scoring of Mario Bonleon. Bonleon shot 9-of-26 from the floor to finish with 22 markers for LSGH, while Lorenzo Mercado took care of the interior with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Greenies moved up to 2-1, while UST absorbed its second loss in four games.
- The Baby Tamaraws also got back on the winning track, coming from behind to defeat the Arellano Braves. Down by 13 at the half, the Baby Tams pushed their way back into the contest in the third period and continued to heighten the pressure in the fourth frame. FEU outscored Arellano 44-24 in the second half to snatch their second win in four outings. The Braves went down to 2-3 in group play.
- The Ateneans continued to suffer from a spate of injuries and absences as they lost their second straight game, this time to the tough-as-nails Staglets. Rhanzel Yong, Michael Calisaan, and John Macasaet exploited Ateneo’s weakness in the paint by combining for 35 points and 39 rebounds, which was the same rebound total the entire Blue Eaglets team had! Onyok Velasco (NOT a typo!!!) and Lorenzo Navarro, meanwhile, took turns burning the hoops from afar, pairing up for 26 points and 6 triples. Anton Asistio led the floundering Eaglets with 22 points, but it’s pretty clear Ateneo still has a long way to go if they want to get back into title contention. Injuries have slowed down some key players, while others are fresh from stints abroad. They have also hit a snag in the Freego FCBL tourney, where they are now toting a 2-4 card. In the Filoil league, the Eaglets are middling with a 2-2 slate, while the Staglets are still undefeated in 2 matches.
- The Golden Stags finally broke through the win column after two tough losses, beating the Adamson Soaring Falcons with superior shooting, rebounding, and defense. Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and Dexter Maiquez combined for 60 of Baste’s 78-point output as they finally got a win after losing to Mapua and NU. The Falcons, meanwhile, absorbed their second loss in four games despite 7 combined treys from Roider Cabrera, Jericho Cruz, and Ryan Monteclaro. Their two biggest stars, Alex Nuyles and Eric Camson, were limited to just 7 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists combined.
- The Green Archers continued to impress after they beat the Fighting Maroons in convincing manner. Jovet Mendoza and Almond Vosotros each produced 13 points to pace De La Salle, which moved up to 3-1. Norbert Torres teamed up with Mendoza to dominate the lane. Torres had 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Mendoza added 9 caroms of his own. Jeron Teng wound up with 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting, though he did commit 4 turnovers. Curiously enough, DLSU had 22 TOs, while UP had just 9. Still, coach Ricky Dandan’s wards failed to capitalize on the Archers’ mistakes. UP shot a paltry 27% from the field, including laying a big fat egg from beyond the arc. A bright spot, however, was newcomer Chris Ball, who finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 FG shooting to add to his 2 blocks.
