2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: April 20 Notes & Scores
Speeding Bullets:
- The FEU-FERN Baby Tamaraws seem to be looking good, despite reportedly no longer enjoying the services of their ace from last year, Jerie Pingoy. Pingoy has reportedly moved elsewhere, so that he won’t be “tied down” by virtue of finishing HS in FEU. It’s been a “whispered fact” that players who graduate from the FEU juniors program are “tied” to the seniors team. Think of it as kind of a “Soc Rivera” effect. Still remember him? FEU-FERN circa 2006, kids.
- The Red Cubs are looking oh so sharp this early, and they will probably continue to build up some more as the NCAA season nears. Look for them to continue their dominance of the juniors game, especially now that the aces of LSGH (Thomas Torres) and Letran (McJour Luib) have moved on.
- The Xavier Stallions did well in their first real test after the graduation of Jeron Teng. This time, they’ll look to RP Team stalwart Kyles Lao to lead them, along with up-and-comer Jarrell Lim and big man Isaac Go.
- For a more competitive look at Metro Manila’s top HS talent, you guys can also check out the Freego FCBL games at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy in QC. They have the best of the UAAP, NCAA, and Tiong Lian leagues butting heads, especially last year’s surprise MMTLBA titlists, the Chiang Kai Shek Blue Dragons, who are led by sleeper top recruit John Kevin Baytan.
- The NU Bulldogs look like the sharpest team across the spectrum right now. Ray Parks has been awesome, but it’s not just a one-man show in Eric Altamirano’s crew. Emmanuel Mbe and Kyle Neypes scored well in their first game, while Denice (not Dennis) Villamor and Gelo Alolino helped out here against the Tams. Are they a Final Four lock this season? Still too early, but they look damn scary.
- The UE Red Warriors have some new faces, but the results are the same – mediocrity. They did give the Knights a bit of a fight in the first half, but Kevin Alas showed them up in the second. Frankly, I don’t see anything drastically different from the Warriors so far.

2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: April 21 Notes & Scores
Speeding Bullets:
- Ivan Villanueva should be one of the leaders of the CSJL Squires this coming season. The Junjun Alas look-alike should be a formidable force underneath as Letran tries to challenge San Beda for the juniors plum.
- Arellano had a good win over the Pirates today, but can they get over the hump against the more established NCAA teams?
- Joel Tolentino made his debut for the CSB Blazers, forming a run-and-gun tandem with Carlo Lastimosa. Too bad the EAC Generals spoiled their party in overtime.
- Ateneo failed to protect its 16-point lead in the face of a blistering San Beda fightback. Baser Amer was great in this one, proving how bright his future is. We can probably say the same thing for the Red Lions this year.
- Once again, the Eagles let their foes get in close, but this time they paid for it with a loss. No way can they defend their UAAP crown unless they toughen up. Warning: steep learning curve ahead.
- My most anticipated match-up of the preseason -- Arthur Dela Cruz vs Ryan Buenafe -- didn't materialize as both guys weren't fielded. Boo.

San Beda didn't "take" ateneo seriously either until the last minutes of the game LOL. Parang pinalamang lang para paglaruan at habulin in the end hahaha. That was fun and easy thing to do with this team anyway, a team who had time beating teams who didn't even make the NCAA playoffs lol.
Hahaha Another LAFTRIP statement. Comedy pala mga usapan dito eh.
Anyway, maka-on-topic naman:
