The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 12, 2012 Notes, Scores, & Images

    Speeding Bullets:
    - Backstopped by recruits from the Lourdes School of Mandaluyong, La Salle Greenhills, and Collegio de San Agustin, the Junior Archers of Zobel blasted the hapless Pirates. And, yes, that IS the real score: 113-27. Curiously, star guard Renzo Subido was nowhere to be found, despite, to my knowledge at least, the fact that he’s still eligible to play. The guys to watch for this season seem to be Aleck Melecio (transferred from LSM), Justin Wieneke (from CSA), and Gian Abanilla (presumably the son of DLSU coach Gee Abanilla).
    - By beating the winless JRU Light Bombers, the UPIS Junior Maroons won their third game in four outings. This time, it was Benz Nacpil and Freddy Pajarillaga who led the way, combining for 26 points, while Raymart Sablan continued to be a solid inside warrior, grabbing 12 boards. Look for the Junior Maroons to improve on last season’s futility.
    - The NU Bulldogs continue to look mighty scary as they now tote an immaculate 7-0 record. With their tremendous frontline balanced by good outside shooting, it seems the guys of coach Eric Altamirano are primed for a deep run as the Filoil tourney nears the end of the Eliminations. Mark De Guzman, Denice Villamor, and Cedrick Labing-isa torched the nets with 7 triples combined.
    - JRU was a picture of strangeness as they let the Arellano Chiefs climb back from a sizeable deficit and steal the game. Rocky Acidre hit 4 treys on his way to 20 markers, while Ralph Salcedo and James Forrester combined for 33 points to help complete Arellano’s comeback. The Bombers led for the first three quarters before the Chiefs came alive in the final frame, outscoring JRU, 23-13. Nate Matute led the Bombers with 21 points, but he shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
    - FEU climbed to 3-1 in the standings after beating the Benilde Blazers. RR Garcia and Chris Tolomia proved to be too much for CSB’s backcourt. Garcia and Tolomia paired up for 5 triples on their way to 33 points as the Tams successfully kept the Blazers at bay. Anthony Hargrove was also solid for FEU, getting 13 points to go along with his 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. He should be the prime inside option for the Morayta quintet in the coming 75th season of the UAAP. Joel Tolentino and Jonathan Grey, meanwhile, led the Blazers with 16 and 14 points respectively.

Tata Marata is still with DLSU, but he just wasn't included in the Filoil roster. Sa FMC lang talaga.

Who knows why DLSU did it? They just did. Maybe it's to give more exposure to other guys in the Foiloil, or they just want to preserve Tata and "surprise" the other teams when the UAAP opens.

He's just not on the Filoil roster. Simple as that.

First of all it's Joseph Marata. Tata Marata is his Father.

He has not yet played a single game in the FMC. I dont think he ever suited-up in this tournament. Surprise? I doubt! Nothing special with his game. Perhaps the Haruna guy is the surprise since he hardly plays.

Sam is neither part of the FFV nor the FMC line-up. He's not even watching his teammates games. Well, what will you expect from a player who doesn't attend practice and surprisingly, seldom attends classes but frequents parties and bars. I won't be surprised if he'll do a la Joel Tolentino move.

Sam Marata is bound to transfer to another UAAP Team. Kung saan, abangan nyo na lang. If DLSU releases him, then he'll be seen in action for another year in UAAP. If not, then no more Marata in the UAAP

To be fair to him, he has watched a few games of his (soon to be former) teammates. It's just not as much as other players who are with the team but are not lined up. Also, his grades are still pretty decent.

AFAIK, he was listed in the FMC roster. Whether he has played or not, sadly, I cannot confirm. Based on the posts in this thread, however, I guess he might as well be on his way out. Perhaps DLSU didn't put him in the Filoil roster because they had an inkling he would be leaving soon?

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 16, 2012 Notes & Scores

    Notes:
    - Renzo Subido suited for the Zobel Junior Archers wearing a protective face mask. Despite this, he still posted solid numbers in a losing effort to a superior San Sebastian side. The Staglets, however, didn’t exactly have an easy time against Zobel. Baste ran out to a big lead in the first frame before the Junior Archers made a game of it. Rhanzel Yong was solid once again, netting a nice doulble-double. John Macasaet and Michael Calisaan both also did pretty well for Baste, combining for 26 points and 17 rebounds.
    - Noube Happi continued to be the most dominant General for EAC. His double-double all but pulverized the challenge from the AU Chiefs. Arellano coach Koy Banal clearly still needs to do a lot of tweaking before he can steer the Chiefs to the upper echelon of the NCAA. Franz Chiong and Remy Morada also did well, combining for 5 triples.
    - Even without Kevin Alas, the Knights proved to be just a little too much to handle for the Altas. Despite Jett Vidal’s 25-point explosion bannered by 6 treys, the Knights were still able to pull out their 2nd win in 4 games. Diminutive guard Mark Cruz was the spitfire here, scoring 16 points and dishing out 4 dimes, while Jam Cortes was rock solid down low. Beanpole Raymond Almazan showed up for this one, and he accounted well for himself with 6 markers and 15 boards.
    - The Stags ran into a very game CSB five that almost gave them their 3rd loss of the tourney. Instead, the dynamic duo of Calvin Abueva and Ian Sangalang once again led Baste to the win. Abueva and Sangalang paired up for 38 points, 18 rebounds, and 5 assists as the Stags weathered a strong fourth quarter by the Blazers. Benilde wasted the hot-shooting of former Green Archer Joel Tolentino, who made 5 triples en route to 15 points. CSB fell to 1-4 in their group.
    - UST built on a strong first quarter and never really let up in their demolition of the Mapua Cardinals. Karim Abdul and Aljohn Mariano led the way with 15 points each, with Abdul adding 15 rebounds to his name. Kevin Ferrer was also good, netting 13 markers and grabbing 8 boards, while the returning Tata Bautista nailed 3 threes to finish with 11 points. Mapua’s erstwhile leading scorer Gab Banal was limited to just 6 points on 1-of-6 shooting. His cousin, Jonathan Banal, led the way for the Cards with 13 markers. This is the Tigers’ 2nd win in 5 matches, while Mapua goes down to 1-4.

Marata may have doomed his future at DLSU at the end of this past season. Marata went against the wishes of team management by playing in the PBA-D league after the UAAP season ended rather than concentrate his efforts practicing with the team and the new coaching staff. The comments left by people close to the program in Archerpride has been mostly no comment to negative. By the looks of things, Zobel alum Jed Manguera has the inside track to replace Marata for this coming season.

More important to the success of DLSU is the playing status of LA Revilla and Van Opstal. The storyline is that both players are currently injured. How debilitating are their injuries? Revilla and Van Opstal were starters at their respective positions last season.

    Cool

BLACKSEDAN, good buddy!!! Musta na dyan? Don't worry about LA and AVO. Both are up and about and have been scrimmaging. One thing Coach Gee is very very sensitive to, is player injuries. Even the most minor of injuries or pain, merits some time off as far as Coach Gee is concerned. He knows that injuries if not well attended to AND rested, could lead to more serious problems for the player down the road. And I mean the player's future as a player. But with the SMC basketball program doctors, physical therapists and trainers looking after our 'walking wounded', they are assured that their progress is closely monitored and only with their go-signal will Coach Gee play them.

As for Marata, Sam is no longer with the DLSU Team. Since I just came back from 6 time zones away, I am still getting my bearings back but will get all the details. Will post his status in APcom either later this week or, most probably, early next week.

Partner, uwi ka naman dito. Nood tayo ng UAAP game. Kahit na DLSU-ADMU game!

GA, thanks for confirming my post. Since Teng is doing well, Marata will not be missed compared to LA or AVO.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 18, 2012 Notes & Scores

    Speeding Bullets:
    - Arwin Margallo and Shaquille Imperial engaged in a shootout, with each scoring 39 points as the Baby Falcons beat the Junior Altas. Margallo, however, had a lot of help as Adamson shot 61% from the field, while Perpetual was held to just 44%. Keanu Asistio was also solid at the slot for the Baby Falcons with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
    - Raph Atangan and Hubert Cani led the NU Bullpups in roaring back from a slow start, upending the FEU-FERN Baby Tams in the process. Atangan, Cani, and center Rey Lapiz combined for 39 of the 59 markers of NU, which had only 4 assists for the match. The Baby Tams wasted a fast start and their edge on the boards as they were outscored 39-27 in the second half.
    - The Golden Stags rolled to their third win at the expense of the Pirates. Once again, Ian Sangalang and Calvin Abueva were the spearheads for Baste, combining for 50 points, 30 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 rejections. Abueva also shot 3 triples. Despite their awesome production, however, Lyceum didn’t really go away. Floricel Guevarra and Vence Laude helped the Pirates stay in the fight till the waning moments. Guevarra and Laude paired up for 35 markers.
    - FEU utilized a big second period to break the game open, and they’re dominant third quarter all but sealed the win over JRU. Terrence Romeo led all scorers with 17 points on the strength of 4 treys. He also grabbed 5 boards and dished out 3 assists. RR Garcia helped quarterback the Tams with 9 points and 7 dimes, while Mark Bringas and Carl Cruz were solid inside, combining for 16 points and 8 rebounds. Nat Lopez and Alex Almario were the only bright spots for the Bombers with 12 and 11 markers each. FEU outrebounded JRU, 55-27, and limited them to just 32% FG shooting.
    - UP absorbed its fifth loss, losing to Letran thanks to the combined 36 points of Jam Cortes and Mark Cruz. In the absence of his two sons, Kevin and Jun-Jun, coach Louie Alas has relied on Cortes and Cruz for the Knights’ scoring, and they haven’t disappointed. Raymond Almazan also played well in his second game, scoring 7 points on top of his 17 rebounds. On the other end, Mike Silungan led the Maroons’ losing cause with 15 points. He just shot 5-of-14 from the floor, though. Coach Ricky Dandan’s big men, Rual Suyod and Alinko Mbah, struggled in this one, combining for just 5 points and 8 boards in 31 minutes.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 19, 2012 Notes & Scores

    Speeding Bullets:
    - De La Salle Zobel zoomed to its second win in three games at the expense of the EAC Brigadiers, who remain winless after four outings. Renzo Subido led the Junior Archers, who were extremely efficient on the offensive end, converting 53% of their field goals while limiting the Brigadiers to just 39%. Zobel also had 13 more assists and 12 less turnovers compared to EAC. Subido looks to be the undisputed leader of the Junior Archers this season, and it seems like he could be a nice sleeper recruit for the Seniors ranks.
    - The Junior Pirates probably set some sort of record for futility after being on the wrong end of a 28-0 first quarter blast against the mighty Staglets. Frontliners Rhanzel Yong, John Macasaet, and Michael Calisaan combined for 53 points to lead San Sebastian, which now totes a 4-0 slate. Almost everyone scored for the Staglets, while nobody scored more than 4 markers for the hapless Lyceum quintet.
    - Femi Babayemi balanced out the sniping of Jett Vidal, Harold Arboleda, and Justine Allano by playing solid in the middle, collecting 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks to help the Altas finally nail their first win after 5 previous losses. The Cardinals wasted a brilliant game by Xavier alum Gab Banal, who finished with 21 points on top of 11 boards and 3 triples. This is Mapua’s fifth loss in six games.
    - The NU Bulldogs survived a tough test courtesy of the Adamson Soaring Falcons, and consequently moved up to 8-0 in their group. Emmanuel Mbe produced an excellent double-double line of 26 points and 13 rebounds to spearhead the Bulldogs’ attack. Ray Parks contributed 12 markers and 7 boards, while Jeoff Javillonar scored 9 points, all from beyond the arc, also for NU. The trio of Eric Camson, Alex Nuyles, and Rodney Brondial led the way with 39 combined points for the Falcons, who absorbed loss #3 after 5 matches. It seems like NU will really be a force to reckon with in the coming UAAP wars, while the Falcons seem like just a shell of the team that finished second in the UAAP standings last year.
    - Four guys finished in double figures for coach Jerry Codinera’s Red Warriors, who had to withstand Almond Vosotros’s 25-points explosion to gather only their second win in five outings. Roi Sumang, Jay-Ar Sumido, Chris Javier, and Adrian Santos all scored in twin digits as UE weathered a strong second half surge by the Archers, who seemed to be enduring some injuries to key personnel. Vosotros was the only greenie to break the 10-point barrier, thanks mainly to his 5 triples. Mark Tallo and Joshua Webb tried to help him out with 9 and 8 points respectively, but, alas, the Warriors proved to be the better team in this game. Perhaps this means that UE won’t be the silly pushovers they were for most of last season, while Green Archers may not be as invincible as some think.

The 2012 Filoil Flying V Preseason Hanes Cup: May 23, 2012 Notes & Scores

    Notes:
    - Mario Bonleon continues to be the most prolific scorer for the Greenies, who now tote a 3-1 slate. The brothers Paras also did well here, combining for 16 points and 5 rebounds. On the other end of the floor, Arwin Margallo, Reiner Quinga, and Kharl Pangaibat tried their best to rally the Baby Falcons, who were in striking distance till the fourth and final frame, where the LSGH unloaded a 26-15 bomb that left the outcome beyond doubt.
    - Carlo Lastimosa played an all-around game to tow his Blazers to just their second win in the Filoil tourney. CSB rallied from a 7-point deficit at the start of the final quarter to prevail over a reeling Adamson squad. Lastimosa punctured the net for 16 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 6 assists to display a well-rounded effort rarely seen from the one-time Blue Eagle. Robert Bartolo had what was easily his best game of the summer so far, narrowly missing a double-double with 17 markers and 9 boards to aid Lastimosa. The strong interior presence of both Eric Camson and Rodney Brondial, both of whom combined for 38 points and 18 rebounds, failed to sustain the momentum for the Falcons, who have now dropped 4 of their 6 games.
    - In a contest that saw the ejection of a handful of players, the San Sebastian Stags took advantage of a depleted EAC quintet and prevailed for the fourth time in six games. Calvin Abueva was his beastly self again, collecting 19 points, 16 rebounds, and 7 assists for Baste. He was ably supported by Ian Sangalang, Jovit Dela Cruz, and Dexter Maiquez, who scored 17, 13, and 10 points respectively. Only 6 players finished the game for the Generals, who were suffering from injuries to four players. Together with SSC’s Michael Miranda, EAC’s Igee King and Jan Acebron were thrown out of the playing court after getting slapped with disqualifying fouls. EAC wasted the strong efforts of Remy Morada and Noube Happi, both of whom scored 18 markers. Happi added another double-double to his total this summer by also grabbing 13 boards.
    - In the final game of the day, the FEU Tamaraws successfully remained in solo second in their group after defeating the Arellano Chiefs. With this win, FEU is at 5-1, just behind the idle NU Bulldogs. The Tams were led by the combined might of RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo, who scored 25 and 23 points respectively. The dynamic backcourt duo also paired up for 7 treys, 6 assists, and 3 steals. The Chiefs, who fell to 2-4, were led by Ike Ciriacruz’s 18 points and 3 triples. Curiously enough, Arellano was without one of its banner newcomers this season – James Forrester.
