    Richard, nasasarapan sa pagsisid

    ALLAN DIONES

Richard Gutierrez on his new GMA News & Public Affairs show, Pinoy Adventures, premiering tonight: ‘It’s more of fun and adventure. The show got conceptualized so that I’ll be able to tour the whole country, showcasing its beauty in a way that’s not typical.’

    Richard, the adventurer
By Nathalie Tomada (The Philippine Star) Updated May 13, 2012 12:00 AM Comments (0)

Manila, Philippines - Richard Gutierrez will be trudging off the beaten track in search for exciting and exotic adventures across the archipelago in his new show for GMA News and Public Affairs, titled Pinoy Adventures, premiering tonight at 8:30.

After hosting several editions of Survivor Philippines and award-winning environmental docus, the latest of which was the climate change-themed Oras Na, Richard said that his latest TV project will be lighter fare.

Richard told The STAR, “Pinoy Adventures is more of fun and adventure. Parang nakita din kasi ng News and Public Affairs yung passion ko for adventure, for the environment and for exploring new places, so the show was conceptualized in such a way that I’ll be able to tour the whole country, showcasing its beauty in a way that’s not typical.”

The actor, who is juggling his Pinoy Adventures with his teleserye tapings and triathlon trainings, has so far gone with his crew to Sibuyan Island in Romblon and Linapacan in Palawan. These places are still off the mass tourism radar but are teeming with great potential, according to the actor.

“So the higher purpose of the show is really to help the local governments promote their areas so people can reach their places and at the same time, to educate the travelers by promoting tourism in a right way — in a sustainable way. It has an environmental inclination but more of travel,” explained Richard.

Setting foot on these places is no joke. “You really have to be a trouper! We rode the banca and crossed an open sea. You will see that in the first two episodes. The waves were huge! But I was telling our producer that with the waves I had experienced in Survivor, wherein they were as big as houses that we couldn’t see the boat next to us, I think I can handle any travel.”

Having traveled here, there and everywhere thanks to his team-up with the network’s News and Public Affairs, Richard was asked for his recommendations as to what can be done to make traveling within the country more fun.

“There are certain limiting factors in tourism, that’s what I’ve observed. First, the infrastructure, then the accessibility like, for example, Sibuyan Island, I wanna go there, I’m a tourist. The place is okay if you’re a backpacker or an adventurer, but can you reach the place as a (regular tourist)? And can the place handle mass tourism?

“I mean, a place should also be ready in terms of infrastructure, then the locals have to be tourist-friendly, then the waste management should also be okay. So there are a lot of factors, but I guess No. 1 is infrastructure and government support, of course.”

[hightlight]As one of showbiz’s “most eligible bachelors,” Richard was also asked if one quality he looks for in a girlfriend is an equally healthy appetite for travel.[/highlight](He admitted he’s seeing someone non-showbiz who, according to reports, is a model-jewelry designer.)

“Of course, I also like someone who is outgoing and adventurous... It would be nice to have a companion na syempre hilig din yung hilig ko na mag-travel, hindi maarte at pwede mong dalhin sa mga lugar na hindi masyadong napupuntahan ng mga tao,” said Richard, who has pulled off some “daredevil” acts (yes, no body double as in action-film parlance) in the programs he did for News and Public Affairs like deep diving of more than 100-ft. and jumping into a river from a 30-ft. high cliff (with safety precautions, of course!).

“So far, my adventures in Pinoy Adventures are high-adrenalin. Of course, you get a little nervous doing these things but there’s more excitement. For me, it’s a blessing to have gone to places that not everybody has seen and experienced. I consider myself very lucky,” he said.

Meanwhile, we asked Richard his top five adventure-laden destinations that he would like to relive and return to.

Sibuyan Island, Romblon — “Right now, it’s on top of my list. I wanna go back to Romblon. It’s because the whole island is a protected area, and it has more than a thousand waterfalls. Then the lifestyle of the people is simple. You can really feel how contented they are that even if their area is not metropolitan, they’re happy.”

Sagada — “I first went there five years ago. I went backpacking with my brothers. We hope to return and explore more of the Benguet area.”

Palawan — “There are still many undiscovered islands to visit in Palawan. In Linapacan, the beach is just so beautiful! If you want to go for a swim, the beach is just a short walk away. The corals are amazing. They are well-preserved. There are areas already damaged by dynamite and cyanide fishing, but where we went to, sa beach entry palang, grabe na yung marine life. So even if you’ll just go snorkeling, you can already see all the corals, very alive and very beautiful. Talagang as far as your eyes can see, it’s all corals.”

Pandan, Antique — “It’s the home of the cleanest river in the country, the Bugang River (it’s said to be cleaner than potable water). I first went there when we did Oras Na.”

Bohol — “I’ve been to Bohol several times already, but I haven’t explored the entire province. In Baclayon, we did a Bikes for the World project there, wherein we gave 600 bicycles to children who were living more than four kilometers away from their school.

“Everytime I go to Bohol, I always stay there for three days. There was this one time when I saw hundreds of dolphins. Bohol really offers dolphin-spotting but it’s not a regular thing; you have to be at sea and wait as early as 5 a.m.

“But one time, my brother Elvis and I were supposed to go snorkeling — it was 10 a.m. — when a boatman said that there was a sighting of dolphins. So we went to the area where they were spotted, and true enough, we saw two groups of dolphins — bottlenose and spinner dolphins. The locals told us that it was a rare happening. I was just so amazed.”

(REY PUMALOY)
