The Funeraria Days of PBB’s Biggel
The impeachment trial was so frightfully dull this afternoon there was probably more fun in watching a line of clothes dry under the sun. That was why I channel-hopped; and how I arrived at the live version of Pinoy Big Brother and eavesdropped on a fascinating story that housemate Biggel – real name Joseph Emil Biggel – was telling one of Kuya’s houseguests.
This Biggel-person is something of a contradiction. Of Filipino-German parentage, the meztizo good looks are good enough for the movies and even television. Until he speaks…
Before he does, you would expect him to do so with the sawit punto of a Fil-foreigner or a home-bred tisoy educated in some fancy international school. When he does, you just go – like – “Huh???!!!”
I mean, something just does not connect about the meztizo good looks and the punto that totally redefines the word promdi. “Parang Batangueńo…” the houseguest that Biggel was talking to described it.
“Parang Batangueńo,” Biggel agreed, “pero marami pa ring halô!”
I had to go to the PBB web site to discover that the lad hails, in fact, from the island of Marinduque and has had a difficult life. That explained the punto and the promdi-ness. It was part of this life, in fact, that the lad was narrating to the houseguest.
His parents left him with his lolo and lola, he told the houseguest; and both were not heard from since. Mahabang-mahabang istorya, he dramatically said. Once started, though, he could not stop telling his story.
He told the houseguest that he only managed to finish high school because his grandparents did not have the means to send him to college. He did some farming and some fishing to help with the finances, he continued. But then, his grandmother got sick and had to take medication that they could not afford.
This was how got himself a job initially as an embalmer and then later as a make-up artist in a funeraria. The way he narrated the story was both poignant and funny, the latter made even more so because of the expression of the houseguest as he listened utterly fascinated.
“Namayat ako ng husto,” Biggel continued his story, “nung una. Hindî ako makakain; puro tubig lang.” When he got home from work, he would ask his grandmother, “Lola, ano pong ulam?”
“Dinuguan,” his lola would reply. Patay na! Who can eat dinuguan coming from an embalming? Albeit, Biggel told the houseguest that he eventually got used to the gore.
To the utter disgust of the houseguest, Biggel told him about the funeraria’s primary embalmer, who worked without gloves and “kumakain pa ngâ ng biscuit!”
“What was your most horrifying case?” the houseguest wanted to know.
“Iyong isang sumabog ang utak!” Biggel replied without hesitation. They had to pick up parts of the accident victim’s head from all over the site.
“How did you manage to keep yourself together?” the houseguest, looking just about ready to vomit, asked.
“Walâ lang,” Biggel replied matter-of-factly. “Kunyarî naga-assemble na lang. In-enjoy ko na lang!” How, pray tell, can you enjoy something like that? This is me asking, by the way; although I can totally empathize with the young man.
The next part of the story was the one which was both tragic and hilarious at the same time.
“Hindî naman sa gusto naming may mamatay,” Biggel said apologetically, “pero ‘pag may dumaang ambulansiya, nagkakatinginan na kami ng mga kasama ko sa funeraria!”
I guffawed loudly although I could totally see where he was coming from.
Not done, Biggel went on, “Kapag nakarining kami ng ambulansiya, magbibihis na kami. Naiisip ngâ namin, sana sa amin! Sana sa amin!”
I laughed even harder. Oh well... The economics of death, no more!
There was a truly poignant end to Biggel’s story, though. Apparently, he kept his funeraria job from his grandmother. When he came home and handed a 500-peso bill to her for her medications, she would be so pleased but naturally asked where he got the money from.
And he just made up some excuse or something...
Aaaaawwwww...
Ah well... Not that I really care who wins this PBB thing, but I hope that lad Biggel gets something from it with which to build a better life. Everyone has a sad story to tell; but a sad story just always seems so much more tragic when it is somebody so young telling it.

Jason's tweet after watching the UnliNight episode where none of the remaining HMs chose Biggel as part of their Big 4.
Hindi ako nahilig sa mga reality show. Pero dahil sa buhay OFW we find ways and other alternative means to divert our attention from homesickness. Minsan I was looking for some TV shows and I came upon a site who streamed live Some shows on philippine TV and I stumble upon PBB Unlimited. I rarely watch PBB in the philippines but the show is worth the watch pampalipas oras kumbaga.
First time I watched the replays and I found out that theres a live stream for 24/7 from then on I was hooked with the show. Pagdating sa work diretso na kaagad ako on my lap top and watched replays and live streaming. The first housemates that catch my attention was of course yung mga housemates na mahirap. Kigoy, Eting, Lyn, and Biggel. They had their individual characteristics kaya kahit pareho pareho silang mahihirap iba iba pa rin ang tingin sa kanila ng mga tao.
Biggel was different from them because he is very vocal with his first times na medyo naging controversial because of some photos that suddenly surfaces. But I followed the show since day one and I could say that one of strength of this young man is yung kanyang kababaan ng loob. Napakahumble na bata and to think most the time he was bullied by some of the housemates pero it doesnt change his relationships with them.
Si Biggel in the mansion.
He cried when Joya, Diane, and Wendy were remove from the looban... Which is just to touching considering he is a man. And if I remember it right siya lang ang hindi pumayag na palitan ng 3gs ni kuya ang tatlong maria kaya si Denniese *** ang napasok and candy and rhea was remove from the house.
When the love interest with tin started mas lalo nakita how biggel really valued friendship. He woud do anything for love. May bola sa kamay to kakain ng sili for just a kiss.. Samahan mo pa ng push ups.. Simple things which means a lot to the viewers.
People say big winners are yung mga housemates that had real change. Biggel had not change much. Siya pa rin ang humble na biggel, masayahin, kapitan biggel or super boyku... Napapatawa pa rin ako. Biggel had change... He knows how to accept the changes for his good. He listens and he surely is a man now.
Its hard to assess housemates to be the big winner. Di pwedeng porket mahirap ka or walang pinag aralan that would be enough. You should touch the heart of every viewers. Hindi stupid at di madaling mapaniwala sa acting or pag papanggap lamang ang taum bayan. Kaya kung ako tatanungin nyo sino big winner ko? I would say its BIGGEL!
Biggel IS deserving to be PBB's Big Winner just like Nene, Keanna, Kim, Bea, Ejay, Ruben, Melai, and James.
To our dear friends the BiggeLovers, Biggelievers, LoveBiggelMuchGroup, BiggeTins, and BigJess Buddies, let's all join forces together and let's make Biggel the Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited. Power vote to the maximum level, think positive, and always pray for Joseph Biggel. No matter what happens on the Big Night, let us all be good sports about whichever way the results end up being. Ignore the haters...let them drown in their own negativity. Good always wins. God knows. God sees.
Good vibes and God Bless us all!
