Chris Ellis, JR Buensuceso and 10 other Fil-foreign players hope to make it big in the domestic pro league.Jerome AscanoAT the close of the PBA’s office hours on July 9, a total of 12 Filipino players born overseas or of mixed parentage, submitted their application to join the 2012 PBA Draft that will be held on August 19 at the Robinson’s Midtown in Manila.
While most still have to submit some documents to finalize their entry into the pool, it is believed that most if not all of them will be able to secure their papers by the time the deadline comes around so they can turn into professional players hereabouts.
They may be merely names to PBA fans for now but many of them had been key performers for their teams in the PBA Developmental League and in my capacity as tournament supervisor, I saw them play and on occasion talked to them.
I will now share my observations, based on their eight-month (or in some cases even longer than that) stints they had in season two of the PBA D-League, which ran from October 2011 to June 2012. There were also several who actually were PBA D-League pioneers, and here are the 12 in alphabetical order:
    1) JR BUENSUCESO (5-9 G, 24 years old) – played one year with RnW Pacific Pipes. Brilliant in stretches, boneheaded in others. A zoom, zoom point guard who fancies himself a Jimmy Alapag play-alike. Maybe in due time and with the right coaching. He has speed to burn and occasionally nails the long bomb and is fearless going inside. 5-9 may also be a stretch. Perfect for a team that needs speed in the backcourt. Likely mid-second round but could go either way.

Karl Dehesa, always solid at crunchtime. Photo by Jerome Ascano
    2) KARL DEHESA (6-3, 25 years old) – also closer to 6 feet than 6-3. Played three conferences with NLEX where he was the third option at either guard spot. Very good defender, doesn’t crumble in the clutch and is tough (yes, that memorable takedown of Janus Lozada is still fresh in our minds) and strikes me as a smart player who doesn’t play beyond himself. Hard to judge but someone in need of some defense and size in the backcourt could take him round two or three.3) JASON DEUTCHMAN (6-6, 24 years old) – seems taller than that but sure, he’s a big guy. Spent last year with Pharex then played a few games last conference with CafeFrance, which cut him before the playoffs. Not a good sign as he seems like someone who could really help you, but might need the ball a lot to be effective. And rookie bigs who aren’t crafty with their footwork or solid with their jumpers can’t expect that in the pros. Still, he’s big and might be worth a gamble as a late first or early second rounder, and only if you have multiple picks.
    4) CHRISTOPHER ELLIS (6-6, 23 years old) – NLEX star will be a top five pick for sure, even top three. He’s 6-6 with a great wingspan, confidence in his shooting touch and isn’t shy to dunk in traffic. Defense a little suspect but he improved from last year to this so he must be a quick study. And he is a good help-side blocker. If there could be a knock on him he gets to be frustrated easily and loses his patience if things don’t go his way. Don’t take him and put him inside though as despite his size, he is a perimeter player through and through.

Cliff Hodge, very good long-range shooter. Photo by Jerome Ascano
    5) CLIFFORD HODGE (6-5, 24 years old) – may, no, should be the top pick in the draft. He is the second coming of Rudy Hatfield with no down side. He’s at least an inch taller, has a very good three-point shooting percentage and won’t go home to the US every so often to find other jobs. Probably won’t date a movie star either but let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. The real deal. One of the league leaders in scoring, rebounds, blocks and FG percentages both inside and outside the arc for NLEX. And he sets the best picks for shooters and rolls to the basket with ease for possible and-ones.6) MARK JEFFRIES (6-4, 25 years old) – bounced around with three different teams in three conferences because he’s a useful guy to have around, evidently coachable and often aggressive, it’s just that there isn’t a single thing that he does very well on the basketball court. Not that tall and a bit slight to be a banger and rebounder, and doesn’t shoot well enough to be a gunner. Last with Blackwater Sports but might be back for another stint in the D-League even if picked.
    7) KEITH JENSEN (6-4, 24 years old) – Think Jeffries but heftier, and does a lot of the same things better. The Big Chill starter can be streaky from the outside and he is a great rebounder coming from the weakside. Has some trouble creating his own shots because his ballhandling skills need work and often uses his jumping ability to get his points. Yet I’m sure he will be an early first rounder because his game bears more than a passing resemblance to that of Danny Seigle, which is great because 80% Dynamite still makes a big bang.

Alex Mallari, solid ballhandler. Photo by Jerome Ascano
    8) ALEX MALLARI (6-4, 25 years old) – Another of the D-League Fil-for pioneers, the PBA comparison is Gabe Norwood in terms of skill set – solid ballhandler for his size, great wingspan, occasionally hits triples but would prefer to drive, some leadership ability. Emotionally though the Big Chill ace is more fiery than Norwood, which is both a plus and a minus. His temper sometimes leads him to make bad decisions on the court but all in all, you can’t go wrong with him. He should be picked very early, no lower than fifth.9) AJ MANDANI (6-0. 25 years old) – A slower version of Buensuceso but no less wild inside the hardcourt. Very solid open court player but struggles when the game slows down and he needs to hit the open jumper more consistently. This speed merchant also bounced around a bit in the D-League before finding a home with Blackwater Sports. Might not be a high pick and won’t be anyone’s savior so second round at best because he could still improve.
    10) KELLY NABONG (6-6, 23 years old) – The guy has actually been around for a while, having played in the old PBL. And at each stop, his team is pumped up by his athleticism and toughness, but often they’ve been disappointed by his inability it seems to follow instructions and stay focused. That changed a bit under coach Leo Isaac at Blackwater Sports, who showcased his scoring, defense and rebounding. That might have been enough to vault him into the late first round

Thomas Tan, steady backcourt player. Photo by Jerome Ascano
    11) YOUSEF TAHA (6-8, 24 years old) – Bit of a mystery. Showed some talent in the bits and pieces of college basketball and D-League action that he actually saw but sidelined way too frequently due to injuries. And despite his size, never grasped the concept of playing with his back to the basket, as the Cebuana Lhuillier center played HS ball in the US as a small forward. Solid passing skills for a big man but not very athletic. He will be drafted, maybe even first round because 6-8 doesn’t grow on trees but he is definitely still a project.12) THOMAS TAN (5-10, 23 years old) – Oh good, the preacher’s son is honest, even with his size. Son of former pro Alex, he is a steady backcourt player who doesn’t make too many mistakes but one wishes he can make his outside shots a bit more consistently. Solid locker room presence from what I heard from the people at Big Chill. Might be the first Fil-foreign guard selected but could also be ignored if teams want more flash in their ballhandlers. Chris Timberlake II, maybe?
So these are the guys who may be part of the PBA draft pool next month. Which one or ones fits your team and would you love to be cheering for next season in the PBA? We will all know shortly.

    - Clifford Hodge is what we need.

FYI of mga ka-Petron. Ito yung trade bakit napunta sa atin yung pick ng Air21.

Petron Blaze, Air21 eye Fajardo, crack Fil-Ams
By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star) Updated May 14, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Petron Blaze (formerly San Miguel Beer) and Air21 have traded future picks in their effort to get better chances of acquiring good young talents from the PBA draft in 2012 and 2013.

The two teams most probably want a crack at Cebuano behemoth Junmar Fajardo or anyone from a slew of promising Fil-Am players now taking residency in the PBA Developmental League.

Petron acquired Air21’s two first-round draft picks in 2012 in exchange for the former’s first round picks in 2012 and 2013.

The Express own two 2012 first-round picks, including one originally from Barako Bull which the Lina Group franchise acquired in a past trade deal involving Japeth Aguilar.

Air21 also entered into a separate trade agreement with Alaska Milk involving Wesley Gonzales and Elmer Espiritu. The deal awaits the approval of PBA commissioner Chito Salud.

Among Fil-foreign players now paying residency in D-League are Pharex’s Jason Deustchman and N-LEX’s Cody Tesoro, Chris Ellis, Karl Dehasa and Cliff Hodge.

The earliest these players can play in the PBA is 2012 as a result of the new draft policy crafted by the league commissioner and approved by the board.

The 2011 PBA Rookie Draft is essentially close to Fil-foreign players, except Smart Gilas Pilipinas mainstays Chris Lutz and Marcio Lassiter.

Under the league’s new draft policy, Fil-foreign players must have played at least two conferences in the D-League to be eligible for the annual draft.

By 2012, homegrown players must also play at least one conference in the D-League to be eligible in the draft.

Meanwhile, Arizona Reid III, winner of the US NCAA Big South Conference Player of the Year honors for two consecutive years, will be Rain or Shine’s import in the coming PBA Governors Cup.

Reid is arriving on May 19, and his sterling credentials and good reputation give the Elasto Painters high hopes they can improve on their Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals finish.

“He’s a power forward who works hard and consistently churns out double-double numbers,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao.

Earlier, Air21, Meralco and B-MEG Derby Ace confirmed their bringing back old imports Alpha Bangura, Champ Oguchi and Courtney Beasley.

Barangay Ginebra is after Curtis Stinson of Iowa State, Talk n Text has Scottie Reynolds of Villanova U as a top option while Powerade, Petron (formerly SMB) and Alaska are still looking for good prospects.

The Elasto Painters just won’t let Reid slip away from them.

Reid carved a great niche for the High Point Panthers in collegiate basketball before playing pro hoops in Italy, Australia and Lebanon.

In his senior year at High Point U in 2008, Reid captured the Big South Conference Player of the Year honors for the second time, only the third player in the conference to win it in consecutive seasons.

He led the conference in rebounds (11.0) and ranked second in scoring (23.9) to easily make the First Team All-Big South for the third straight year.

The previous season, he became the first player in Big South history to reach the 1,800-point/900-rebound club.

He ranked first in BSC in rebounds and was the second leading scorer, emerging the only other player outside of Kevin Durant to average at least 21 points and nine rebounds.

He established conference all-time records of most rebounds in a game (25) and most rebounds in a career (1,014).

Reid went to High Point from Gaffney, South Carolina where he was a four-year varsity player at Gaffney High School.

If i were petron this is my ideal lineup for them next season:
    C - fajardo/ pena/ ildefonso
    Pf- arwind/ jwash
    Sf- lassiter/ ellis
    Sg- dh/ lutz/ duncil
    Pg- alex/ denok/ lanete

I will trade away baclao, reyes and yeo for future pick. I heard air 21 willing to trade there 2013 1st rd pick petron should grab that opportunity since these 3 players na sinabi ko, there talents will be just wasted if they stay at petron.

Rumor has it that there were two teams vying for that Air21 2013 pick

    Meralco offered MacMac Cardona
    Petron offered Denok and Baclao

Air21 wanted Jason Ballesteros and MacMac or JYeo and Baclao.

Wow! If that indeed is true, I would do that trade in a heartbeat! With the impending entry of Lassiter, we could do away with Yeo. Personally, I prefer Denok since our point guard rotation is shallow. Not to mention Denok is one of the league's premier defensive guards. Next year would probably be the year Slaughter and Banchero apply for the PBA draft.

Not that we need more players though.

The negotiation mentioned was preliminary as far as the rumor is concerned. We don't know how far the talks went and who won the bidding.

My best guess is that Meralco won it.

  19. #3019
sana kunin ng Petron yung worth it na players sa draft and this free agency... suntok sa buwan na yung 2013 na pick.

Having 2 picks in the first round, mas magiging stacked up ang line up ng Petron.

    C - Fajardo, Pena, Baclao
    PF - Santos, Reyes, <3rd Pick>
    SF - Washington, Lutz, <3rd pick>
    SG - Lassiter, Yeo, Hontiveros
    PG - Cabagnot, Miranda

Kung masettle na ang chemistry, ang ego nila Santos and Washington, and ok ang head coach... pwede na mag establish ng panibagong dynasty ang Petron...

I don't really post in here much, and I'm not one that really likes a lot of trades. But since we won't be seeing Petron (na sana naman SMB na ulit) until next season, I thought of trades that would be giving the team an almost total face lift.

    Point Guard:
First, I won't touch our point guard rotation. I actually think it is a really good combination. We have Alex, who is good in offense, at least average in D, is clutch, and is a leader (though would be better if he were more vocal). Then we have Denok, a though defensive guard that is no slouch in D. Then you have Lanete, who is a perfect third point guard.

    Shooting Guard
As for the shooting guard, I wish we had more shooting from the outside. Lutz and Yeo can shoot from the three, but they are not the Fonacier/Dondon/Lordy/Sunday type. Trade Yeo to Shopinas for Renren and a future 2nd rounder Renren still shot around 38% from downtown this past season. It also gives the 2 guards a more defined role. We have the slasher in Lutz, a shooter in Renren, and an all-around veteran in Dondon. I also like to keep 3 shooting guards as it seems that Lutz (due to how he plays) and Dondon (due to age) are getting injured a lot.

    Small Forward
Trade Jaywash to Powerade for Sean Anthony or even get back Guevarra plus a future 1st round pick. Let Marcio start. Not sure though if Anthony is considered a Fil-Am, so baka magkaroon ng problema with regards to the Fil-Am limit. Let's assume na ReyG and Future 1st round pick na lang ang kapalit.

    Power Forward
Trade Arwind to Alaska for the 2nd overall pick (though I doubt that) or Gabby Espinas Maybe add a Baclao or Rob Reyes to sweeten the pot. Pick Hodge with the 3rd pick (if he is still there), or Ellis. Though I really really hope they get to pick Hodge. If Alaska agrees with the 2nd pick-trade, then grab both. Let's say for the sake of argument that the trade is Arwind and Baclao for Espinas and future pick/s. And with an Arwind and Bacalo, say Alaska picks Ellis with the 2nd pick instead, and Petron goes with Hodge.

    Center
I think it is already a foregone conclusion that Fajardo would be with the team next year. Though I prefer Reyes to be the main back-up, I still think Pena would be there.

Basically, it focuses the offense on less players, and gets the team more energy and scrappy players. I think it is no coincidence that the last two championships we won, we had extreme energy guys (Ping and Gabe back in 2009(?), and Grundy last year).

The picks we get also need not be 2013 picks. It would be fine if we get 2014 or even 2015 picks. Just in time when Danny I and Dondon, among others, call it a career.

Players going out: Yeo, Arwind, Jaywash, Baclao.
Players going in: Renren, ReyG, Hodge, Espinas, Fajardo.

    Line-up:
    PG: Cabagnot/Miranda/Lanete
    SG: Lutz/Hontiveros/Ritualo
    SF: Lassiter/Anthony
    PF: Hodge/Espinas/Ildefonso
    C: Fajardo/Pena/Reyes

with maybe two to three future mid 1st round picks, which would be perfect to pick role players to replace our retiring players in the future.

Yeah, my trade proposal sucks. Haha. Walang magawa eh.
