Elmo Magalona’s surprise-filled life

ELMO Magalona—the 17-year-old singer and actor who is following the footsteps of his late father, Filipino music icon Francis Magalona—lives a life full of surprises.

“I like surprises,” exclaimed the young Magalona who has been chosen as the face of snack brand Oishi’s newest campaign, “O Wow!”. He was presented to the media on April 18 at Chef Jessie restaurant in Rockwell Center, Makati City.

The O Wow! campaign puts the spotlight on everyday surprises that make life enjoyable. It also encourages Filipinos to find or create “O Wow!” moments from the unexpected. And at the event, Elmo proved that he is the young Filipino snacker who can truly represent this attitude.

Elmo’s O Wow! moments

Elmo, who is fast becoming a hot showbiz personality, alongside siblings Maxene and Saab, always finds “O Wow!” moments at work. It turns out that the friendly celebrity is fortunate to have many fans who visit him armed with surprises.

One that Elmo particularly enjoyed happened while he was taping for a TV show with his love team Julie Ann San Jose. He recalled, “[Some of] my fans went to the set and brought me a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.”

And just recently, another fan gave Elmo a very meaningful surprise. “I was at a mall show when a fan gave me a message in a bottle. Inside was a letter made of Post-Its in different colors of green, pink, red, blue,” Elmo shared. “She wrote about how I’m a big inspiration to her, and how I’m a part of her life. It was an ‘O Wow’ moment because she doesn’t even know me personally and considers me very important to her.”

Elmo also told reporters that performing on big stages is always a thrill for him. To date, his biggest “O Wow” moment as a singer was when he opened for international teen star Miley Cyrus in her Manila concert.

“Yon ang biggest performance ko ever as a performer at sobrang dami ng tao!” he exclaimed. “It’s really difficult to open a show for an international star.”

At home, surprises are a dime a dozen for the huge Magalona family. They especially love throwing surprise parties on birthdays. In fact, he had one during his 16th birthday.

“I was having lunch at Eastwood Mall with my family and after lunch, they convinced me to go to the bowling alley,” Elmo related. “When I got there, all my friends were waiting for me with balloons and gifts.”

Elmo’s own surprise for his fans is a movie he is working on with Julie Ann. Titled Just One Summer, the film is directed by Mac Alejandre, and also stars Joel Torre, Cherrie Pie Picahce, Buboy Garovillo, Alice Dixson and Gloria Romero.

Elmo described the movie as a heavy drama. “Iiyak ako dito. At nakakaiyak talaga talaga ang mga eksena,” he related.

Asked if he feels confident to do the movie, he replied, “I’m getting ready for it. There’s definitely more pressure than my first film (Tween Academy), which means I need to be more responsible and dedicated to my craft.”

Oishi’s crunchy history started in 1946, when Chan Lib and his wife, See Ying established a small family business engaged in the repacking of flour and coffee products. Their flagship product then was Liwayway gawgaw, (another iconic Pinoy product) which became the No. 1 laundry starch.

In addition to fun snacks, Oishi also expanded into ready-to-drink beverages. In 2010, the company introduced the vitamin-in-a-drink concept with Smart C+ with 500 mg of Vitamin C in every 500 ml bottle; and in 2011, the Fiber & Fruit, which has a dietary fiber content of 5 mg per 350 ml bottle.

Today, the Oishi product line has more than 40 brands of savory snacks, cereals, nuts and popcorn, biscuits, cookies, and juices that are enjoyed in various parts of the world.
