so far, RP has two qualified athletes for the London Olympics. Mark Barriga in boxing and Maristella Torres in athletics.
for more updates about the status of our athletes. here is the thread:
RP athletes at the 2012 London Olympics
May local coverage ba ng Olympics this time?
AKTV sigurado na, I don't know sa ABSCBN sports.
sa cable sigurado na ang Solar sports.
I heard Sen. Koko Pimentel say: Boxing is the best chance for our country's 1st Olympic gold medal and more worldwide sports glory for our county. By creating the PBC, this will ensure that we will produce more Pacmans and protect the well-being of our Pinoy boxers.

I guess it's true, just check out:
For the London Games, only light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga has qualified for the tough Olympic elimination matches after his stint in the World Championships last year in Azerbaijan.
Also gunning for Olympic slots in the men's side are eight other boxers in five weight categories--Rey Saludar (flyweight), Charley Suarez (lightweight), Joejin Ladon and Junel Cantancio (bantamweight), Orlando Tacuyan and Dennis Galvan (light welterweight) and Nathaniel Montealto and Wilfredo Lopez (welterweight).
Campaigning in the women's side are Kate Aparri, Josie Gabucco and Nesthy Petecio (light flyweight) and Janice Banares and Rica Aquino (lightweight). All boxers are scheduled to leave next month for overseas competitions.
^ I posted in the other threads the contingent of the men's team for the olympic qualifiers, so with the women's team

I've been reading news about athletes that have made it to their respective countries' lists. Just wondering - why are the teams announced last minute, a month or two?
with 34 days to go before the big events, some countries still has to fill up their final line-up. in fact, US is currently conducting Olympic trials in athletics and swimming. some sports still has slots to fill up as well. like in basketball , there is still an Olympic qualifying tournament in both men and women. I think the final participants in every Olympic event will be filled up by July 15.
Fearless Forecast:
USA to win 40-45 gold medals, 105-112 total medals
China to win 38-45 gold medals, 85-95 total medals
Great Britain to win 25-33 gold medals, 65-80 total medals
Russia to win 20-28 gold medals, 75-85 total medals
Korea, based on their 2010 Asian Games performance, can finish on 5th place with at least 15 gold emdals.
Strongest rival will be Australia and Germany.
Japan can pull a big surprise again like in 2004 and challenge, AUS and GER, but will be behind Korea. 10-13 gold medals.
Cuba will bounce back, to win 8-11 gold medals. To be challenged by France and Italy, with 8-10 a conservative estimate.
Big surprises: Brazil - can win 5-10 gold medals (next host luck maybe).
Jamaica and Kenya will win more or less 5 gold medals each.
Canada, Netherlands and Ukraine for me will have 4-8 gold medals by the end of the games.
For Asia, IRan had a great performance last Asian Games, and I think 2-4 gold medals are possible for them. Same with Kazakhstan. India will definitely win bigger that the last 2 Olympics combined.
For ASEAN countries, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia are sure to win a medal each from Badminton, Boxing, Weightlifting and Diving.
Excited na ko sa Women's Volleyball.
Fearless Forecast ko:
In terms of gold medals,
1. USA
2. China
3. Russia
4. Germany
5. Great Britain
6. Australia
7. Japan
8. Italy
9. South Korea
10. Cuba
In terms of total number of medals,
1. USA
2. Russia
3. China
4. Germany
5. Australia
Host ang China last time, kaya I am expecting na bababa talaga ang gold medal output nila.
But compared to 2004, malaki ang iaakyat nito, especially so total number of medals.
40 gold medals for China is achievable, good for overall championship. Pero di ko maunderestimate ang Americans. They can win 40 gold medals as well, plus 100++ medals overall.
This Olympics will witness the increase in total output of Asian countries. China might not win as much gold medals like in 2008, pero for sure, it is the team to beat pa rin. Japan ang Korea for sure will win more medals than in 2008. Iran, Kazakhstan and India will perform better in my opinion. Same with North Korea, Uzebkistan and Taiwan.
Ang Thailand, I am sure bababa ang output nila, pero Malaysia and Indonesia will have a better performance than in 2008. I am seeing 90-100 gold medals, compared to 85 won in 2008, 68 in 2004 and 50 in 2000.
2 athletes i'm looking forward to:
yohan blake who beat usain bolt twice already in the lead ups
james magnussen whom michael phelps is apparently ducking that's why he's not competing in the 100-m freestyle
and he haven't won a medal in any international competition in 100m free.
actually, he was targeting 8 events but pulled out in 200m free due to conflict in Olympic swimming schedule
the morning heats and finals of men's 4 x 100m free will be held on July 29. the same day that he will swim the 200m free heats and semifinals. and on the following day is the final of 200m free, the same day that he will swim 200m butterfly heats and semis. so he decided to concentrate on the relays to conserve his energy.
