Casting Talk: Looks like we have a Magnus



Filming on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is set to begin in less than a month and there are plenty of casting announcements on the horizon.

Lily Collins (Clary), Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace), Robert Sheehan (Simon), Jemima West (Isabelle), Kevin Durand (Pangborn) and Robert Maillet (Blackwell) are the only confirmed cast members at this time.

Cassandra Clare has revealed that Alec is cast, but his identity remains a secret due to scheduling issues. Jocelyn is also cast and the studio is working out her schedule.

One role that has been interactive with fans have been some of the actors who auditioned for the role of Magnus Bane.

It’s been a role that has been documented for the past couple of months, but now it looks like we have our Magnus, and, like our Alec, his identity remains a secret.

According to a fan that attended a signing in Rhinebeck, N.Y. on July 15, author Sarah Rees Brennan, a friend of Clare, revealed to those in attendance that not only has Magnus been cast but that he is “hot.”

And she told us OVER AND OVER AND OVER how HOT the guy being cast for Magnus was. Obviously she couldn’t tell who it was!

Casting announcements should be plentiful in the coming weeks as the film shoot date fast approaches.

Paul Jones Effects Studio working on special effects for ‘City of Bones’

While we don’t yet have a full cast, the movie crew are hard at work on pre-production for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in Toronto.

One of those crew members is Mark of 3B artistry, who is one of the make-up artists on the film. Him and the rest of Paul Jones Effects Studio will be responsible for creating the looks of the creatures of City of Bones.

Jocelyn is a really fun character to write. She’s overprotective (but for a reason) and often really unyielding and unsympathetic, but she’s also a heroine who saved the world from Valentine, endured a lot of loss, and can execute some pretty badass moves. Moral ambiguity is always fun to play and who does it better than

the gorgeous and talented Lena Headey. You probably know her best as Cersei from Game of Thrones.

I have had an actress crush on Lena for years so when they told me she was cast I did a happy dance and hit Sarah Rees Brennan on the head with a spoon. Actually I would have done that last bit anyway. Lena is amazing and I think she will be amazing as Jocelyn. I am super psyched.

Godfrey Gao cast as Magnus Bane in ‘City of Bones’

We finally have a Magnus Bane.

Cassandra Clare announced that Godfrey Gao has been cast as Magnus in the upcoming film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

So after an exhaustive search during which many, many hot Asian men were considered by the casting director (her job, so painful), the director, and the seventy-odd other dudes who have to sign off on this kind of thing, I can confidently tell you that our Magnus may be …

THE HOTTEST MAN IN THE WORLD.

Which is only fitting for Magnus, of course.

You cannot take a bad picture of this guy. It is impossible. That is probably why he is a supermodel as well as being an actor.



It’s raining on Magnus!

Godfrey is, in addition to being all gorgeous and stuff, super-talented (his audition was awesome), loves the books, and is, like Magnus, ridiculously tall.



He is also super-nice — we emailed briefly and he said “I’m half Indonesian, because my mom is Peranakan Malaysian And my dad is Shanghainese - Soo hopefully the fans will like me playing Magnus!”

Jared Harris cast as Hodge Starkweather in ‘City of Bones’

And the casting news just keeps on coming (not that we’re complaining!)

Cassandra Clare announced that Jared Harris (Mad Men, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows) has been cast as Hodge Starkweather in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Here’s what Cassie had to say:

Hodge is also a really complicated character. He’s not entirely bad, not entirely good. He’s a brilliant man led down a bad path a long time ago and he can’t turn back, but he does love those kids he tutored. So if you’ve seen either Mad Men or Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows (in which he was Moriarty), you know this guy, and you know he’s fantastic at moral ambiguity.



He’s got SAG awards all over the place and I think he’ll really nail Hodge’s moral dilemma. Welcome, Jared!

Godfrey Gao has a message for ‘Mortal Instruments’ fans



Godfrey Gao, who has been cast as Magnus Bane in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, passed along a message to Cassandra Clare to share with Mortal Instruments fans concerning his casting.

So Godfrey is behind the Great Firewall of China at the moment; he asked me if I’d pass along a message to everyone who has been so enthusiastic about his casting.

“I will be back in Taiwan on Tue! I I’m as excited as you are that I get to be a High Warlock of Brooklyn! Can’t wait to meet the rest of the cast members and of course to meet my new fans! Loving the support, thank you!”

Clare had this to add:

It is kind of unfair to be that hot and also really nice.
