Craze for 'noynoying' annoys Philippine leaders

A craze for "noynoying" is annoying Philippine leaders as activists spread photos of themselves lazing around with bored expressions -- a dig at President Benigno Aquino III for supposedly doing too little.

Government critics argue that Aquino, nicknamed "Noynoy," has sat idle while oil prices surge in the Philippines. College students in Quezon City popularized the trend this month by lounging on university steps to mock a "do-nothing president" during a protest, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

"That our government seems helpless in the face of rising oil prices is nothing new. ... The real problem of our government today is the impression that the Department of Energy has given up on doing anything more beyond giving a small subsidy to jeepney drivers," Boo Chanco opined in the Philippine Star.

The jab has quickly become part of the political debate. When leftist politician Teddy Casiño criticized the government for not taking on bills to address oil prices, he told Philippine outlet Bulatlat: “It is no time to be ‘Noynoying’ when the economy and the peoples’ livelihood are taking a hit."

Trying to fend off the dig, the Philippine government released photos of the president at work, only to find them parodied on Twitter and Facebook. Critics made hay of the fact that one shot of the president with a stack of papers included a few remote controls, suggesting that he might not really be working.

Allies say Aquino, who has promised to tackle corruption, is being unfairly maligned. Education Secretary Joel Villanueva argued to a Philippine paper that the president and his cabinet worked until 2 a.m. and came back at 5 a.m. One provincial governor argued that millions of jobs had been created.

“For me, "Noynoying" means somebody who always tells the truth. For me "Noynoying" means somebody who is careful about the people’s money, not the kind of person who spends the people’s money carelessly,” Transportation Secretary Manuel Roxas II told the Philippine Star when asked about noynoying.

Despite the criticism, Aquino still has a 70% approval rating, according to a recent PulseAsia poll. He has been praised for cutting unemployment, reducing crime and steering clear of scandal in a recent op-ed that slammed "rabble-rousing Leftists and P-Noy haters."

But while Aquino is still popular, those polling numbers have slid since the president was elected less than two years ago, warned Val Abelgas, former managing editor of the Manila Standard.

"Aquino must now get up from his comfort chair and move," Abelgas wrote.

indeed, noynoying is annoying. annoy the incompetent culprits more.

those international news media should be made aware that SWS and Pulse Asia are Yellow propaganda surveys lacking in credibility for being owned by KKKK's.

ginagawang bobo ang mamamayan ng bansa sa resulta ng surveys nila na obviously kukoteng noynoyans ang pinagdampot. these surveyed noynoyans must be coming from that ABiaS propaganda about some "ako ang simula" program that lured some brainwashed clueless in participating to form some kind of hoard where they sourced their surveys.

it's highly possible the Yellow Media could be accomplice, the Impeachment Court particualrly through Sen Miriam should summon those from propaganda Yellow survey firms and Yellow Media to interrogate it.

I can just imagine the Coronas having a good laugh about this over dinner everytime they read some new article on this (especially in foreign media)

I expect CJ Corona to incorporate this in his next speech

But what i really want to see is for Sen Miriam to use it in her next Manifestation when the trial resumes...

Miriam: (to the Prosecution) WHA?? You had all this time during the long break to prepare for this case, and you are saying you arent ready for the Defense's (insert whatever)??? What have you been doing all this time? NOYNOYING??

Para mapasok sa official record ng Impeachment Court.

FARINAS: Your honor please, we request that that word be stricken from the record....

    DRILON: I AGREE!!!

and if you want to go further, tingnan mo ang record niya sa house + senate: lacklustre performance. almost zero-achievement.

you've asked for it, you've got it. you reap what you sow. couldnt be simpler than that.

kung bitin pa, oh 'di sige isa pang hollow ulit pero sikat ang sinunod natin ihalal sa 2016 elections.

you forgot him noynoying on the Quirino hostage crisis that cost the lives of international tourists, mas matinding example yun.

not to mention the abusive Yellow Media compromising their safety in the name of crass profiteering at the tourist victims' expense. He was also noynoying in handling the Oligarch's puppet media.

Oct 2010, KLM warned PNoy that they may pull out Manila operations because of CCT.

Fast forward to 2012, KLM pulled out its Manila operations starting April 2012. Noynoying since 2010.

Ironic that they can pass an impeachment case in 2 days.

    Air France-KLM stops Manila-EUrope flight
    TUESDAY, 27 MARCH 2012 21:21 RECTO MERCENE / REPORTER

THE general manager for South China of Air France-KLM (AF-KLM), Cees Urcem, on Monday said he was “very happy” with the announcement that the Common Carrier’s Tax (CCT) bill has been approved on second reading in Congress. But he said the airline would still have to study whether or not it would resume direct flights from Amsterdam to the Philippines, and vice versa.

The last Air France-KLM flight left Manila for Amsterdam on Sunday night. The flights were discontinued because of the CCT.

Urcem made the statement after he was informed that House Bill 444 had been approved on second reading; the measure now needs only the approval of President Aquino to become law.

Once signed, the CCT, which earns the Bureau of Internal Revenue some P1.3 billion in annual income, would be scrapped.

“I am very happy, but we will have to reconsider the operations. You have to make decisions long in advance. You are working with very, very expensive aircraft and you have to make a complete summer and winter schedule,” Urceem said.

He added: “We cannot bring them [direct flights] back to the old schedule anymore, but as we mentioned before, if the change comes and it is final, we will reconsider.”

Earlier, Urceem said that they needed to see the total abolition of the CCT before KLM and the rest of the European airlines decide to resume direct flights from Europe to Manila.

AF-KLM terminated 60 years of direct flights to Manila and started intermediate stops to Taipei in December 2011 after complaining of difficult economic circumstances and high fuel costs servicing the Manila-Amsterdam routes.

However, the airline said it has decided to transform its current non-stop operations between Manila and Amsterdam to one, with an intermediate stop in Taipei to pick up passengers before continuing the journey onward.

Scores of European carriers have terminated direct flights from Manila to Europein the past years because of the imposition of the 3-percent CCT and 2.5-percent gross on billings tax.
