A good friend was just offered a job that pays 165K/month in the Philippines. He is currently in the US making $100,000+- a year. Do you think that 165K would give him the same lifestyle here as in the US?

165 / month after tax and all deductions... 30k he he
Right on the spot! I am going through the same process for more than a year now but I'm still here in the US. There are lots of things to do before your friend can even consider moving back to the Phils. Does your friend have a family/kids? How about savings? Is he going to buy a house or rent?
Some things are cheaper in the states and very expensive back there like houses and cars. I am not rich by US standards but cars and houses are more affordable in the US. I used to buy audi, bmw, lexus and mercedes which would cost Php 4-6 million in the Philippines. Add in insurance, gas, and maintenance and that Php165K monthly wont be as much as you think. Even though I still make more than $10K/month, I now drive a honda and prius trying to live a simple life to prepare myself.
I also have similar job offer in the phils but that is not the reason why I am going back. My wife and I are going to start a business and hopefully everything will work out good. The hard part is taking the next step.
You can't put a price to being close to your roots.
Oh wait.
Yes you can, but it's different for every person.
100,000+USD a year tapos 165k/month na 30% o mahigit pa ang tax....WAG NA OY!! ANG LAYOO LAYOOO.![]()
magpolitiko ka na lang dito. Kikita ka pa ng milyon milyon sa pork barrels at suhol.![]()
Bro, consider other factors like cost of living...
Taxes in the US is also very high... state tax, federal tax, etc...
$10k/month is almost 3x higher than P165k, but what are the factors?
cost of living upto 10x higher? taxes in US is higher? standard of living?
Let say you got P5M savings in 5 years working in the US, diversifying that savings will get you an average of 50k a month interest. which is more than enough to live a decent wealthy life (without working) in the philippines. but of course if you dont have that savings, its a different story.. hehehe
There are states with 0 income tax like Florida. And the tax rate is almost the same in pinas. Pinas is actually expensive for a third world.
Cost of living is relative. 10k a month is I believe middle class and more than enough to have a decent lifestyle. There are benefits in living in the States... like clean air. Sa states, puti ang kulangot, sa pinas itim![]()
I think you have a lot of misconception about cost of living in the US.
Let us start with taxes. Me and my wife pay 20.7% taxes and that includes federal, state, local, ss and ui. That tax rate is based on my salary and her's which of course is way more than $120K/year.
Last month, my electric bill was $77 for 580kwh. Meralco will charge around Php 5800 for that which equates to $134 (rate of Php43 to $1). I can't imagine what it will be like if the AC is constantly running because of the hot weather in manila.
Gasoline unleaded is Php55 / liter. Here, it is Php43 / liter which is $3.79 per gallon. A brand new Camry cost $23K here and the same car will cost $34K/Php 1.5M there. I wont even compare prices of bmw, lexus or MB.
US Mortgage rate is 3.75% for 30 years fixed. Phil. banks usually charge 10-14% for housing loan. Do the math and see what the monthly ammortization of a Php6-8M small house in a safe and good subdivision.
Car insurance, cellphone, cable tv, internet, clothes, shoes are cheaper here as well and the list goes on. Now tell me, is it really cheaper to live in the Philippines?
I will echo Bigot3AtBalbas comment, cost of living in Pinas is actually expensive for a third world country.
gross ba yan? if yes, then around 130k net mo nyan. i think that's already decent. i think he can have more than his lifestyle in the US. ilan ba dependents nyan? are they going to school? where do they intend to stay in the phils? etc..
Not to mention the orderliness and discipline of people in the states, you can buy some cheap stuffs here but you will be sacrificing a lot dude. Just experience driving here makes you think it's not worth going back. If you're raising a family and you have the capability to live there in the states might as well do it, not here man.
Imagine 10 or 15 years ago, raising a family here is not that bad. You wouldn't think of going abroad. But now, let's say what would be the scenario here 5-10 years from now?![]()
