woo hoo another EPICSERYE from GMA... marami na naman tayong matutunan about Philippine history...
Since the title is Indio, I would assume that the setting is in the Philippines while under the Spanish regime, kasi Filipinos are called as Indios back then.
I am not really a historian so my knowledge on Philippine history and evolution is limited, however... my theory on why "indio" is considered as a derogatory term will be based on the nature on how it is used viz-a-viz with how it originated. While it may be true that the term was conceived as a collective term for inhabitants in Asia, we also have to remember that the colonists thought of themselves as a superior race to the natives of Asia, thus the term to described them can also be reflective of how they were viewed... " low class ignorants and inferior to the Spaniards in knowledge, physical features and social standing".
This general perception was also what the church took advantage of to control the people (which is partly if not overwhelmingly true up to this day), by using religion to manipulate these "lowlifes" into submitting to their orders and whims. Instead of looking at the natives as their equals, they look at them as an inferior race, and the term that describes them encompasses their social standing and how they were viewed as inhabitants of that land.
i agree yes, it has to do with context, especially on how the colonists perceived us. kahit yung historians, sang-ayon sila na derogatory term nga ang indio, at hindi rin nakatulong na lumala ang tingin natin sa mga kastila dahil na rin sa mga amerikano. but if we look at it, wala namang masyadong alternative terms ng mga kastila para sa mga pilipino noon. they could have used "los filipinos" but that entails an entity that's independent from spain, at the time when we're still under colonial power. if "los españoles"--that could be confusing too, since hindi naman talaga tayo identified na spaniards, culturally, linguistically, or ethnically. ang kultura lang na namana natin sa kanila ng wholesale ay catholic culture, not necessarily spanish culture, although hindi maiiwasan na may konting spanish culture na nakapasok. "insulares" o islanders is also confusing since it means ethnic spaniards born or living in the philippines. ang best choice na lang ay "naturales" o natives at "indio" or indian, at parehong ginagamit yun ng mga kastila, interchangeably. ang sakin lang, i think it's time that we reconsider if we should always take offense from this word (indio) or not especially since hindi sa lahat ng pagkakataon ay ginamit ang term na ito to connote superiority by the ones using it (rizal even used indios bravos somehow with pride.) this way we can perhaps slowly move out from the victimhood that this term has imposed on our collective consciousness, because i think this victimhood is becoming a historical burden.
I get what you're saying, but I think my problem with reconsidering the word in a lighter context was that in reality, that word was really intended to be used as a derogatory term to start with, so I cannot reconcile it and interpret it differently.
Parang ganito kasi ito. For example, even up to this times... people who are called "probinsyano" or "promdi" are the target of jokes eventhough ang literal na ibig sabihin lang naman nito ay taga-probinsya sila. Pero we know that there's more to that when someone is refered to that mockingly because of the "context" of how it was used.
Sa case ng Filipinos, some foreigners equate being a Filipino as a Domestic Helper or a Prostitute. We can't help that eventhough it was not entirely true but that's the context of how they refer to our nationality. Pero, ang interpretation natin sa word na ito ay positive, and that's how we choose to view it. Think of it in reverse sa Indio.
Yung paggamit ng word na ito sa atin noong unang panahon, itinatawag sa atin ng may malisya kapag pinamumukha sa atin na mas mababa tayo sa sumakop sa atin, so the whole context of how the word is used specially by the Spaniards are not really used in a positive light.
...sa case naman ni Rizal, I believed he's trying to make a positive spin by using the word "indio" to get back at the Spaniards. Kaya nyo yun?![]()
excited na ako dito... Miss Suzi, kailan po ba ito ipapalabas?
Sana po 2 or 3 directors ang kunin niyo just like laloka mentioned...
meron director for drama, special effects, at fighting...
More mixed of aerial and long shots and less of close up para makita
talaga yung background/setting ng INDIO...
I'm excited na po dito at I'm sure marami na naman kami matutunan at expect mo na active ang sinulid kapag magumpisa na ang INDIO...
I'm excited na po... woo hoo for more EPICSERYE gawang Miss SUZI
I'm more interested in the content of the series... I'm excited na meron na naman SERYE that will teach us about Philippine History.
