Who are the Highest-Earning Advertisement Models of 2012 So Far?

With 2012 already more than half gone, experts in the advertisement field were consulted to determine which celebrity has earned the most via advertisements in the first half of 2012.

Still going strong two years after her Olympic gold medal win, figure skater Kim Yuna bested the other stars to come in first after earning close to 10 billion won in profits from advertisement deals.

Earning close to 1.2 billion won per commercial and having already shot 8 ads so far this year, the earnings put the gold medalist atop the earnings podium.

Kim Yuna also bested other female stars to come in first in a survey done by Korea’s Commercial Strategy Research Center. Her wide-appeal certainly showed through her extensive range of endorsements in everything from cosmetics to electronics and even beer.

Though the number of advertisements she has shot this year has declined in comparison to previous years, her earnings still puts her well above the rest.


Making a leap frog seemingly out of nowhere to second place was actor Kim Soo Hyun who burst onto the scene this year with the mega-hit drama The Sun and the Moon.

Kim Soo Hyun earns, on average, half a billion won per commercial and has already filmed 11 commercials so far this year giving him a total earning in the 7 to 8 billion won range.

Kim Soo Hyun’s earnings are all the more impressive when considering the fact the actor was considered a new face until his starring role in MBC’s The Sun and the Moon. Since then he has shot advertisements for laptop computers, athletic wear, pizza, jewelry and more.



Big Bang’s earnings per advertisement, at about 1 billion won per commercial, is comparable to Kim Yuna’s 1.2 billion won per advertisement price tag but Big Bang filmed only six commercials this year giving the group a total earning in the 6.6 billion won range.

The earnings still gives the group the highest total earning among idol groups this year. Even abroad in Japan, the group earns on average about 400 million won per advertisement.


Actor Won Bin came in fourth with about 6.4 billion won earned this year from his commercials for coffee, hiking wear, water and more.

Following behind was Kim Tae Hee who earns about 800 million won per commercial. Having filmed six commercials so far this year, she is believed to have earned about 4.8 billion won in advertisement deals so far this year.


The star who shot the most advertisements the past year (over the course of one full year) was Girls′ Generation (SNSD) who shot 26 advertisements.


Other high-earning stars who didn’t place in the top five included Zo In Sung, Lee Seung Gi and Lee Byung Hun.

A user of DC Inside’s Han Ga In Gallery uploaded a series of photos with the title ‘She’s not Han Ga In for nothing!’

In the photos, Han Ga In was shown face down on her bed in a shower gown, with her big eyes on the camera. Her distinct features and clear complexion also grabbed attention.



A rep from Han Ga In’s agency J One Plus Entertainment said about the photos, “Han Ga In and her fans communicate through DC Inside. Sometimes fans take photos of Han Ga In, and she uploads some photos she took of herself, too. The photos probably made it into other parts of the web this way. She recently attended the Shanghai Film Festival and took pictures before taking a foot bath in her hotel room, and we didn’t know the photos would draw this much attention.”

Han Ga In is currently busy shooting a variety of commercials after her success with the drama The Sun and the Moon and the film Architecture 101.

Park Yoo Chun revealed a picture on July 3 tweeting, “My mind says you’re complete but I don’t know if it’s because my eyes are blurry but today’s work is proving difficult. I’m going to sleep now. Good morning!”

The tweet, made at 6 a.m. (KST) showed a dark room which was revealed to be Park Yoo Chun’s production room. Amid the darkness, only light from the computer monitor as well as from the breaking dawn outside the window could be seen shining in the room in the early hours of the morning.

JYJ Wraps Up Its Fan Membership Week

The group JYJ -- made up of Junsu, Micky Yoochun, and Kim Jae-joong - wrapped up their 2012 JYJ Membership Week, after running from June 28 to July 1, signing on 22,000 official fans.

The event was held free of charge for the fans, though it cost JYJ's management roughly 2.7 billion won. The event was held at three exhibition centers at SETEC, featuring many different sights to see.

Fan meetings were held on June 30th and July 1st where the fans got to see their favorite singers in the flesh and hear their stories.

This Membership Week was the first such event held in Korea, as a type of expo for JYJ fans. Fans from abroad even came to check it out. A total of 7,024 Japanese fans were recorded to have entered into the country.

Insights on Outstanding Korean TV Drama Series: the Seoul Drama Awards

Thirteen Korean TV series were nominated for Outstanding Korean TV Drama Series. Among the nominated series, which were all successfully broadcasted in Korea, there are some that were especially popular abroad. However, there are also some series that were very popular in Korea but were ignored by foreign audiences. On the contrary, some series were less popular in Korea than they were abroad. Of course, a series that has sold well everywhere has the best chance of winning the Outstanding Korean TV Drama Series Award. Korea.com has analyzed the popularity of each nominee to predict the possible winner in advance.


A criterion for measuring popularity in domestic Korea is rate of viewing audiences from AGB Nielsen. Another criterion for measuring popularity abroad is the number of voluntary voters for each drama on AsianWiki website. All nominated series were given high ratings – above 90 out of 100. Also, they all share similarly high rate of viewing audiences. However, number of voluntary votes that each drama received varies between Korean and foreign audiences.





Drama series that were more popular in Korea than abroad are The Princess’s Man, My Husband Got A Family, The Greatest Love, Sign, and Deep-Rooted Tree. The Princess’s Man, which recorded on average of 24.9% of the viewing audience in Korea according to AGB Neilsen. Actor Park Si-hoo and actress Moon Chae-won made a great couple, and the supporting actors’ performances were very good as well. Unfortunately, in abroad they didn’t get a lot of attention for Princess’s Man. 712 people voluntarily participated in the rating on Asianwiki, which contrasts to 9,615 voters who rated City Hunter.



My Husband Got A Family, the only series currently ongoing among the nominees, recorded 37.0% of the viewing audience, which means that more than one-third of the Korean population watch this. The actor Yoo Jun-sang and actress Kim Nam-joo are mature and well known in Korea, but it seems that foreign audiences are not yet aware of them. Only 204 random voters participated in rating for this drama.



The Greatest Love reached 21% of the viewing audience with famous Korean actors Cha Seung-won and Kong Hyo-jin., For The Greatest Love, 624 participants voted for this drama.



Sign and Deep-Rooted Tree both recorded about 25% of the viewing audience; in other words, a quarter of Koreans watched them. Yet, unfortunately among foreign audiences, 128 people were interested in voting for Sign, and 316 people for Deep rooted tree. The probable reason that Deep-Rooted Tree got less attention abroad is that it is a historical drama that concentrated more on Korean history than on romance.



The series that were more popular abroad are Dream High 1, My Princess, and Rooftop Prince. Dream High 1 got 17.2% of the viewing audience, which is remarkably lower than the previously mentioned series. Nevertheless, its splendid casting of “idol” singers as actors and actresses helped it gain a lot of popularity abroad. 2790 audiences voluntarily voted for Dream High 1. The lead actors were Su-ji (of MissA), Kim Soo-hyun, Tack-yeon (of 2PM), Eun-jung (of T-ara), Woo-young (of 2PM), IU, and Bae Yong-joon



My Princess also had world-renowned actors, Song Seung-hun and Kim Tae-hee. Therefore it has got 2195 voluntary voters. Since it was popular abroad, it was able to, overcome its comparably low performance in Korea, which amounted to 15% of the viewing audience.



Rooftop Prince had Park Yoo-chun, a top Asian singer, in the lead role. He is very famous in China and Japan as a member of TVSQ. They are the countries importing Korean TV drama series. Even though Rooftop Prince recorded approximately 15% of the viewing audience in Korea (which is comparatively low), 1364 voters voted for Rooftop Prince.





The Moon Embracing The Sun and City Hunter are the most probable winners. According to statistics they were among the most popular series both in Korea and abroad. The Moon Embracing The Sun recorded an amazing 42% of the viewing audience. On AsianWiki, 3,150 participants voted for this drama. The Moon Embracing The Sun is a fictional drama about the poignant love story of a king of the Joseon Dynasty and a female shaman. The child actors’ performances drew a lot of attention, and the story touched all who watched it.



Like The Moon Embracing The Sun, City Hunter also performed very well both inside and outside of Korea. It recorded 18% of the viewing audience, which might not seem that good, but considering that another nominee, The Greatest Love, was broadcast in the very same time slot, its record is actually pretty good. In abroad, 9615 voters voted for this drama, which is a phenomenal number. This statistics say that there were more audiences interested in watching City Hunter than The Greatest Love, while they were competing with each other.


Of the 13 series competing, it seems that The Moon Embracing The Sun and City Hunter will face off in the final running. Still, there is some possibility that such other series as Rooftop Prince and Dream High may make a showing. It will be exciting to see the results. Recently, a new commercial of Ha Ji Won in which she shows an unusual look was posted on an online community board. It spread out online very fast, giving her a nick name “Tearing Ji Won.”

In the commercial, Ha first appears in an elegant black dress but decides to play with an umbrella during a break from a photo session. She gives a powerful swing with an umbrella as if it were a golf club and tears her dress accidently.

Kim visited Tokyo, Japan, on July 4 to attend a special preview of the drama series The Moon Embracing the Sun, which is scheduled to air on KNTV, and a press interview.

Hallyu star Kim Soo-hyeon-I made an appearance at the Hanmadang Hall in the Korean Cultural Center in Sinjuku, Tokyo celebrating the start of "The Sun and the Moon" hosted by KNTV.

In a press conference that was held irrelevant to the event, Kim claimed, "I was attracted by the scenario. Leading politics and ordering the men and the love that was never fulfilled seemed like a lot to me but it was that much more tempting".

"We endured the cold, hunger and sleep together until the very last and the cohesion between cast and staff made the drama possible".

"When we shot the scene where Lee Hwon (Kim Soo-hyeon-I) realized the exorcist Wol (Han Ga-in) was the Yeon-woo he loved, everyone on site cried. I still can't forget the feeling. It was a great experience for me".

He continued, "To pull off the character, I referred to the comic The History of the Three States".

"The teamwork between everyone on the team is what created this drama and not my performance. I was able to meet good people through it and everything is a challenge for me".

Kim Soo-hyeon-I noted his reputation through the drama "Dream High" that was aired in July last year as Song Sam-dong. "The Sun and the Moon" will be broadcasted for the first time on the 18th of august on KNTV.

Six popular Korean actresses have been nominated as the Outstanding Korean Actress in the Seoul Drama Awards. Along with the TV series they worked for, they are all loved by viewers. However since the nominees are evaluated by foreign viewers, it is important to have global appeal abroad in addition to acting skills or any other characteristics.

It seems that one of the probable winners now is Suzy from Dream High1, considering that her popularity is drastically increasing in and outside of Korea. People all over the world started to pay attention to this little girl as she stepped into the limelight. However, the fact that she is originally a singer, and she doesn’t have that much acting experiences compared to the other nominees can be an obstacle to her winning the award.

Another probable actress for the award is Han Ji Min with her drama series Rooftop Prince. Her partner in the series was Park Yoo Chun(JYJ), who has a tremendous number of fans in Asia. She might gain some benefit from his fans, too.

Ha Ji Won, well known for her acting skill and numerous hit films, has a chance to win, but her series The King Two Hearts barely became known overseas.

Han Ga In from Deep-Rooted Tree(?) is famous for her pretty appearance. Nevertheless, her inadequate acting had been an issue. baka typo error ang sumulat kasi TMTETS sya andun not D.R.T.
