First of all, congratulations to FEU MVT for winning game 1 of the best of 3 finals. You are 1 more step from winning another UAAP championship game.
My take on the game is that FEU came out with all guns blazing while UST seemed to be very much demoralized. Forgive me for I based my views here while I watched the game just on TV.
All seemed to go very well for FEU. Their defenses were solid, their floor defense was there, their 1st ball was great thereby giving an easy time for setting, and even their serves were fine. I was expecting Labrador to score a lot, but I didn't expect the others to explode as well.
As for UST, league MVP Ramos didn't make his presence felt in this game. He was blocked most of the time. Depante was also guarded well. Rico and Arbasto made some good moves but not by much. Alfafara was just a shadow of his killer game versus Adamson. Doloiras was really out of it. Even Coach Emil acknowledged that during one of the huddles and was heard on TV. During the 1st set, there were a total of 3 questionable calls which the commentators mentioned and they implied that it may have rattled the UST players somewhat. But the great 4-peat champions they are, they should have re-grouped and made up for it in the succeeding sets. But FEU had other plans and went for the jugular in the next 2 sets.
UST should re group now. There is no more tomorrow if they lose the 2nd game. They should put game 1 at the back of their heads, but they should not forget the lessons they learned from it. They should scout the opposition and get ready for any eventuality. I believe that in order for a good attack, the 1st ball should be well enough so that the setter (Ucang) will do better job. Ramos was not voted League MVP for nothing so he can score. So is Depante. Rico, Arbasto and Alfafara are coming on their own. Doloiras should wake up from his game 1 slumber and become his usual excellent self come game 2 and 3. He is, I think, the key to giving a good fight. His 1st ball to the setter will spell the key to our attacks. His defense is un-paralleled so he should watch out for FEU's, particularly Labrador's, attacks, even his backline hits. I still think that UST can snatch this game 2.
Good luck to both teams. Whoever the winner this season is truly mvery much deserving. I hope there will be no injuries.
