NCAA moving to TV5
TUESDAY, 28 FEBRUARY 2012 19:51 JOEL ORELLANA / REPORTER
THE National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is dropping Studio 23-ABS-CBN as its official television coveror in favor of TV5’s AKTV starting next season.
The BusinessMirror learned that the country’s oldest collegiate league has agreed to a three-year contract beginning Season 88 with the sports-oriented TV outfit owned by Manny V. Pangilinan.
The NCAA management and ABS-CBN officials reportedly did not come to terms on the league’s certain demands, specifically on a juicier financial package and the airing of the men’s basketball games on weekends.
ABS-CBN’s second of a five-year contract with the NCAA ends after the ongoing Season 87. But NCAA officials deferred officially expressing their desire not to renew with ABS-CBN because the cheering competitions will still be aired this Friday.
It was learned that the financial package offered by TV5 is “miles ahead” of what ABS-CBN has offered. NCAA officials, however, kept the figures under wraps, and so did TV5 brass.
Studio 23 airs the men’s basketball games on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the first-semester action, and also the volleyball championships in the second semester.
For the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) whose contract with ABS-CBN expires on March 31, 2015, Studio 23 provides live coverages of the men’s basketball games on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays in the first semester and the entire women’s volleyball season in the second semester.
With TV5 on AKTV which uses the Channel 13 frequency, the NCAA will be guaranteed live weekend airings of the men’s basketball games and the finals of football, taekwondo and volleyball.
