Just got home from the Megamall screening and I liked it. I have issues with the story (it was my first exposure to the story by the way, haven't read the novel nor seen the musical) but the acting was just great. Anne lived up with the hype but man Hugh Jackman was fantastic here!

Hugh Jackman was also freaking brilliant.

The whole cast was GREAT. Weakest link was indeed Russel Crowe.

I'm still on a Les Mis high. I can't get over the awesome scenes.

Sa mga nakapanood na, naiyak ba kayo? Saang part kayo naiyak?

Nung nanood ako last Saturday, kahit kasama ko kapatid ko, di ko na napigilang umiyak. Kung pwede lang humagulgol

Bago ako magising kanina, yung last event sa dream ko ay kumakanta ako ng I dreamed a dream

... when hope was high, life worth living ...

and then I immediately imagined Ann singing it ... her hair cut, her dress lose barely covering her breasts, the look of despair on her face, ...

I Dreamed a dream in times gone by
    When hope was high
    And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die

Dahil sa kanta na yan sumikat din si Susan Boyle

Talking My not-so-miserable Les Miserables experience

To love is to see the face of God.

This review of Les Miserables is not about the story. Not about the musical. Not about the book. It is plainly just about the experience of the movie. I TRIED to see it with fresh eyes with no bias from reading the abridged version of the book or seeing a college play once about it or by the 1998 movie of the same title, but really couldn't. Because one does not simply try to explain Les Mis.

I saw a Facebook status of a friend who also saw the advance screening last night, which made a mark on me and made me realize that all the words he said were exactly the same thoughts that I have for the movie: “The challenge in writing a review for it isn't in deciding whether it's worth watching or not - it's in figuring out at least ten different ways to say that it's an absolute masterpiece.” [btw you might just see this exact sentiment in a website. He was the one who wrote that. No plagiarism. ]

It’s a pretty long movie. Despite the fact that it was already shortened for the silver screen, it was still able to play on the more important aspects of the story. Which is good enough. But for some, it might not provide the emotional investment you may have gotten from reading the book.

It is a musical adapted for the silver screen in glorious aspects of cinematography, raw characterization and visual intensity. The strength of the latest movie version over the play is projecting the facial expressions of the actors to show the intensity of their tragedies. It was shown well. God knows you will probably die in your seat while Anne Hathaway sings I Dreamed a Dream. I did. Figuratively of course. If there is one thing that I have to really applaud this movie for, it’s the entirety of its cinematography. It was a feast.
For me this movie started with Valjean’s release and ended with Fantine.
From that moment on, it went downhill for me, broken only by the more exciting Valjean-Javert parts and later on Eponine.
Anne Hathaway did too much of a good job, because almost everything that came after Fantine was lackluster.
Let us not talk about Russel, he isn’t the best singer. The girl who played Eponine turned out to be pretty good. I wasn’t struck by her in On My Own.
A Little Fall of Rain, now THAT scene nearly destroyed me again.
I kinda disliked Marius' falsetto though...not a big fan of the actor...and the character.

To love is to see the face of God. To love, in many of its forms (love of duty, unrequited love, romantic love, love of money, love of freedom, love of one’s self and dignity-discover for yourself which characters those pertain to), is actually to see the majesty of how intricate God made life out to be. And just like Les Mis the movie, to love it is to see the greatness of a timeless story.

Believe me when I tell you that it is difficult to express all the feelings I have for this movie. So instead let me just leave you with some fun spoilers:

So I guess a 4 out of 5 is in order
