ha ha tama. a good thing for the school (higher passing rate). a bad thing for students kasi magiging stiff ang competition sa law school to be able to graduate. he he anyone here from 2011 or 2012 batch civil law? matanong ko lang sana kung ilan kayo nung first year o kahit ilang section lang para naman maestimate ko ang graduation rate/attrition rate he he he!

-anong requirements ang dinala ninyo nung interview? ang naka lagay kasi sa exam permit> b.cert., good moral, xerox copy of TOR, and pics.

pero tumawag ako kanina sa admissions ang sabi TOR and Honorable Dismissal na. ang problem ko, ang tagal mag release ng Honorable Dismissal ng school ko di aabot sa day of interview ko which is on thursday. Tska TCG lang madadala ko wala pa ding release ng TOR. :<

sana nga. ako din alam ko yung honorable dismissal isusubmit lang pag qualified na for enrollment. yun kasi ang nakalagay sa admissions page. tingin ko madaming hindi makakadala nun kasi kung hindi ako tumawag hindi ko pa malalaman. hehe.

saan ako nag undergrad? i'm pretty sure you haven't heard of it. hehe TRACE College in Los Baños, Laguna. pero if you have time or atleast interested to know more of it try to google it na lang he he. mejo controversial kasi siya dahil sa may ari ng school :> hehe

An Address of Thanks and Inspiration delivered by Rachel Felices
UST Civil Law

2012 Cum Laude Civil Law Graduate
A pleasant evening to our beloved parents; our dear Vice-Rector Fr. Pablo Tiong, O. P.; our supportive regent, Fr. Isidro Abaño O. P.; our ever simpatico dean, Dean Nilo Divina; our accommodating faculty secretary, Atty. Arthur Capili; the president of our UST Law Alumni Foundation, Justice Oscar Herrera; our passionate professors; and to my gorgeous, dashing fellow graduates and friends. Today, you are all the faces of happiness.

“Every setback is a setup for a comeback.” This is a quotation which springs from those who also have sailed through angry seas, drifted through roadblocks, and traversed rough terrains in their journey of life. This is just one of the inspirations I want to, and hope I can, leave to you at the end of this simple panaghoy to your hearts.

Almost four years ago, sometime in June 2008, I entered room 133 with only a pen and a yellow paper in my bag, thinking that I would use them to write our first homework from an entire chapter or a number of pages of an assigned book—but I was wrong. No specific book was assigned; not even a chapter or page number was given. To my surprise, we were immediately provided with a list of cases, composed of 10 pages with neither topics of which I had an idea nor with a particular number of cases to read and topics to include for our next meeting—except with the professor’s parting words of the day, “just be prepared,” which became a habit, by the way. So I read the first two topics on the list in my college PGC book with the eight combined cases listed under them, thinking it would be enough. Guess what? I was wrong again. The book was not enough, not even close. When my name was called, “Rachel, tell us the case of Borromeo,” I was able to recite the case, but when my professor dug deeper into its substance, that’s when I froze; my hand and body turned numb. Indeed, it was a question with a “chilling effect.” And yes, like what was said in the case, “Little learning is a dangerous thing.” What an embarrassment. But hey, it’s law school! Come the preliminary examinations, I thought I did okay; after all, nagsunog ako ng kilay, nag-ipon ako ng pimples to study the coverage of the exams. Again, I thought wrong.

These series of unfortunate events, I thought, became a fad in this venture of mine. It got me thinking that maybe I was not good enough for law school. I almost felt like waving a white flag and concede before the fight even started, especially when I saw my college friends dropping out of law school and there were these tempting job offers. But, something inside me pushed mightily this stubborn little girl to continue to chase her dreams, to move forward, to have a comeback. As for me, there is this one thing that never failed to comfort me when everything seems to fall apart—Prayer. Then, I’m back on track again. Every setback is a setup for a comeback, a meaningful comeback, one which we will always look back with our heads up high. Every failure opens a door to success. Every teardrop cleanses our cheeks for a sweeter smile. God has put us exactly where we are to give us space, a room big enough for us to be better than we were. I also doubted myself during the tremendously challenging first semester of my fourth year in law school. But, I did not give up. Instead, I made use of the hardships, the frustrations, the disappointments, and the setbacks to do better in the second semester. It was one of those trying moments which escorted me to stand here today.

We all had our fair share of setbacks; we were shouted “WRONG” a lot of times; we were scolded and told, “I am very disappointed of you ah,” a couple of times or more. More often than not, we were rejected, our potentials were doubted. And yet, we are all here today, wearing sophisticated barongs, handsomely tailored suits, head-turning dresses, killer shoes, stunning make-up, classy hairstyles, and infectious smiles. We did not give up on what we were called to do, to chase dreams or better yet to let our dreams chase us, for the end result is worth the pain. This day is worth the pain.

Let this day be a worth-grabbing opportunity to thank those who accompanied us all throughout this journey, those who gave us a ride to race to this pit-stop of our lives, those who crafted bows and arrows for us to win this moment, those who cheered for us as we rise as the stars of this episode. To my Papa and Mama, the good-looking Mr. Amazing Edgardo Felices and the exquisite Mrs. Wonderwoman Adelfa Felices, daghang salamat po! All of these will never be enough to pay your hard work, patience, support, love, and care back. Everything you have sacrificed for us, your children, will never be put to waste. Our parents are like Forrest Gump’s mother; they give us magic shoes that could take us anywhere our hearts will lead us to. Thank you to all the parents for being the presidents of our fans club. Your love is immeasurable. You have equipped us with strength and courage to surpass any challenge which may be thrown our ways. You wished for us to grow as a good person; let us, your gifts from God, make your wish come true with a bonus: We will be better. To my brother and sisters, the impeccable Francis Felices, the ravishing Fatima Joyce Felices, and the genius Faye Justin Felices, thank you for keeping me sane. You help me remain simple and fun. Nakakawala kayo ng pagod. It means a lot. Salamat.

To the University of Santo Tomas, thank you for giving us a shelter of learning. What we have learned between your walls marked not only in our minds but deeply inculcated in our hearts and souls. Thank you for all the scholarships and assistance you have given to your students. We will always be proud and gratified members of your family. To our regent, Fr. Isidro Abaño, thank you for keeping us part of every unforgettable affairs of the University. Our stay in UST will never be complete without them. Thank you, father, for helping us in maintaining our relationship with God and in making our faith in Him more unbreakable.

To our loving dean, Dean Nilo Divina, thank you, sir! Thank you for all the encouragement, for believing in us, for your generosity, for championing our place to be here. You have always shared to the Faculty of Civil Law your heart, your blessings. You are a big part of this success. To Atty. Art Capili, thank you po. You are easy to talk to. You always have your smile on. To the thirty-eight wise men and women, my professors, my mentors, who whole-heartedly shared their knowledge, expertise, time, and experiences, thank you po. For threatening to disown me if I would get a 75 or lower final grade in any subject, salamat po. For helping me discover what I can do and who I can be, salamat po. To all the Faculty of Civil Law professors, thank you po! You have taught us not only the substance and technicalities of law, but you also taught us to be more determined, hardworking, and passionate. Your zeal is contagious. You built with us the pillars of our dreams. You armored us with preparation. You trained us to toughen up. You nourished us with your wisdom. You have touched our lives. It is priceless. To the UST Law Alumni Foundation, I am so grateful for your benevolence. Thank you! To Kuya Jay, Kuya Ryan, and Kuya Felmer, salamat po for enduring our “pangungulit.” To Don Ramon, salamat for maintaining our rooms clean and conducive for learning. To our remarkable Student Council, thank you for your unconditional service.

To my darling Wivino E. Bracero II, muchos gracias, amigo! Some may have misunderstood how you present yourself, but I don’t. Greatness is your destiny, my friend. Thank you for making me a part of it. To Aireen Cacho, you are our teddy bear. Salamat for cheering us up, Ninang Ai. To Sam Miravalles, Sammir, thank you for sharing your bounty. You were never selfish. Thank you for laughing at my jokes all the time, seatmate! To Jasmin Sison, salamat ‘day for “Jamstarting” our day in class. You have given me friendship I thought I will never have. Jam, you can! To the “Babaeng Walang Pahinga,” Ms. Olivia Penticostes Taganas, agyamanak, ma’am! I’m so lucky to have a friend like you. Ikaw na talaga! To Marx de Chavez and his team, I could not imagine surviving law school recitations without your diligence. Your “memory aids” and that of Civil Law’s student organizations and group of friends, that of Atty. Jeanette Alvarez and Atty. May Nolasco, helped most of us to be here today. Maraming salamat! To the awesome Keel Achernar Requierme Dinoy, salamat kaayu! You have been so patient and understanding. You never left my side. You shower me with optimism when all I see are the negativities. You are one of my humble inspirations. To my 1B, 2B, 3B, and 4B family, to my batchmates and friends, thank you for all the mind-blowing everyday experiences. We have loads and loads of memories together. They will surely last forever. I hope we will create more.

And to our Almighty God, our Father, iba po talaga Kayo! You deserve all the praises. To You be the glory. One of the things that I am grateful about law school ay ang lalo kong paglapit sa Iyo. It took me a long time to realize that everything is Godsent. I’m sorry for the delay. Thank You for not giving up on me. You patiently waited for me to come home. I will give You thanks forever. As I always sing to You, “ang lahat ng ito ay para lamang sa Iyo.” You have taken every step with me. Maraming salamat po!

I prepared this panaghoy with only one thing in mind: to say thank you. But as I wrote on the back of my last law school final exam booklet, memories suddenly struck me and I got inspired to write more. Fellow graduates, remember this day not as sad farewell. Look at this day as a chance to say hello again. Tomorrow we’ll face new angry seas, roadblocks, and rough terrains. In facing them, remember what Mary Collins said, “God did not create any of us to be average. He did not make us to barely get by. We were created to excel.” This day will be our buzzer, our alert tone, to remind us that in our pursuit to be an officer of the court and servant of the administration of justice, we shall employ our edge as a Thomasian, that is, exercising the legal profession with competence, compassion, and commitment, one with conscience. Let us employ “Thomasianing,” as our Dean coined. Let us savor this moment. Even the ferocious rain outside cannot stop us. So to the Class of 2012, the Neo-Centennial Graduates, for a job well done and for our new beginnings, though we have not won half of the battle yet, we owe to ourselves a big round of applause. Raise your hats, my friends, and let’s get this party started!
