Contrary to reports, Dr Bengwayan has not been voted or awarded a Reader's Digest Asia Environmental Hero award. In fact, we have no such awards programme currently or planned.

Earlier this year Dr Bengwayan was interviewed by a freelance writer working on a project for Reader's Digest Asia magazine. That interview has not been used and is not scheduled for publication."

Word also goes around that news people themselves were directly involved in the anti-SM protest, particularly those working in Baguio City. The question is this: How could those news people deliver impartial reports on the issue?

I also read the same analysis in an article in Philippine Star, entitle Pining for justice: Are we missing the issue for the trees? No wonder why I've been reading comments and articles stating that mas okay pa na wala ang SM Baguio dati kasi okay naman mamili sa ibang stores sa Baguio. Now it's getting clear. Don't they want competition? =(

He's only one person, why don't try to ask the "real experts", you can start with the Forest Management Bureau or sa UPLB Forestry, I was in the scientific conference last May 7 in UP Baguio, one guest speaker was an expert in forestry, a professor in UPLB forestry, a member of the international dendrology group and a faculty member in one US University. There are other foresters in the conference from UPLB and DENR-EMB-CAR. Baka naman sabihin mo about sa issue ang scientific conference, hindi, natackle lang sa forum, we have researchers and professors from China and Japan too.

I'll not mention their names since I know they don't want to be quoted at ayaw nilang makisali sa issue na yan dahil government na mismo ang nagbigay ng permits sa SM, pero iisa ang sinasabi nila, earthballing pine trees is almost the same of killing/ cutting them. Vertical ang main root system ng pine trees, mababaw lang ang pag-earthball process, sa tanda ng mga punong yun, puputulin at tatamaan mismo ang main root. Even the horizontal roots will be cut sa process. During also the earthballing, part ng process ng pag-earthball ang pagputol sa mga sanga, kung binasa mo ang mga previous post ko, nilagay ko na doon na hindi na ulit tutubo yun, unlike other tree species.

And what's the idea of you know this issue well since you started the thread, I doubt you are a forester or even related to the science.

One more thing, hindi monopolyo ng mga protesters na yan ang sentiments ng mga tao, marami pang iba na lumalaban at hindi pabor sa ginagawa nila, I'm one of them and there are others also na walang group na kinabibilangan. Lalo na yung mga may alam sa totoong issue ats ceience behind the issue.

Parang sa global warming thread lang din ang iba dito, yung mga walang alam sa science ng global warming, political at economics ang approach, isinasantabi nila ang science part kasi di naman masisisi wala silang idea at mababaw ang alam sa issue. Hindi nila naiintindihan. Kahit ipaliwanag mo na, hindi pinapansin, just look at the posts na ang attack ay kasi SM kaya sinisiraan, may ginagawa naman daw (kahit niloloko lang sila ng hindi nila alam). Walang nag-quote o mag-pasinungaling man lang sa mga scientific facts posts dito, ni wala man lang mag-tackle sa inyo ng effect sa local climate settings at UHI, talagang iniiwasan lang at hindi binabasa.

Tama naman, andoon ang SLU, UP, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras, so katulad ng ginagawa ng most developers sa Metro Manila kasama na ang SMDC, nagtatayo sila ng mga condominiums sa tabi o malapit sa malalaking universities.

I think there was one news before sa The Wind Residences Project na yan sa Tagaytay, may mga residences sa area na nagrereklamo na binabaha ang area nila (imagine Tagaytay binabaha) and the erosion/ siltation problem sa area (di ko sasabihing drainage area, kasi walang drainage system ang buong Tagaytay City, tanungin mo na lang si MMDA Chairman, hahaha).

Di na nasundan ang news na iyan, hehehe

Sa Silang tinatayuan ng isnag malaking Condominium Project dyan yung Monteluce, mainit na rin kasi dumadami na ang sementadong lugar.

If the project of SM Baguio is inevitable and there are no other alternatives, okay naman eh, kaso may ibang paraan pa, ginagamit kasi nila ang problem sa traffic para magkaroon ng katwiran ang paggawa ng project. I cited other ways lalo na sa part ng LGU. I'm doing EIA and part yan ng urban planning kaya alam ko ang adverse and beneficial effects ng project.

Ang isa pang ayaw ko sa ginagawa ng SM, yung pag-advertise at paggamit ng media na walang alam sa ganitong mga bagay at science, at pinalalabas nilang anghel sila at tama ang ginagawa nila at walang adverse effect. Magsabi na lang sila ng totoo at wag lokohin ang tao.

Kung makakakuha lang ako ng EIA report ng project na eto gagawin ko eh, pero mainit sa mata eto kaya I doubt kung ibigay ng EMB-CAR ang environmental study ng makita na ang environmental assessment na ginawa ng consultant (teka in-house din pala ang environmental consultancy ng SM, may sarili silang mga tao, hindi third party ang gumagawa ng EIA nila).

Kung yung SM Calamba nga nabigyan ng ECC, tingnan naman ninyo ang epekto sa traffic ng mall na yan, traffic na nga dati sa crossing lalo na ngayon.
