    Edgar Allan Poe

What can you say about this guy and his works?

I have read his short tale stories, and I must say it is quite gory and barbaric (viz., Hop-frog, Black cat, The tale-tell heart, etc.).

What other Edgar Allan Poe's material can you suggest for me to read?

    Thanks.

The Cask of Amontillado isn't "barbaric" and can be heard here, at PodCastle.

The Dupin stories deal with crime and "ratiocination" a la (predating, even) Sherlock Holmes.

    I have his collection.

Cask of Amontillado is my favorite (since middle school). And recently Dupin tales (Murders in Rue Morgue) precursor to Sherlock Holmes (even noted in the first Holmes story).

He's not your typical read. Probably one of the early American greats. He writes a lot like a European (but then again he was schooled in Europe and this is the time when American and European styles are still confluence) but with American inflection. He's known for gothic(Metzengerstein)/dark romanticism (Fall of the House of Usher) and satire/comedy (Bon Bon).

I think one of the most notable style is he frequently quotes someone on the beginning of his work (usually French, or French quote) and he like in Conan Doyle quotes heavily from Latin and French litterateurs (except Doyle quote heavily from Shakespeare in English instead of French).

I think his life and his works kinda go hand in hand. If you read his biography it's kinda obvious. Unknown, grew up rich on step father (who he later had problems with) who raised, drank heavily and had love affairs. He died early at 40 and if you looked at his pictures you could tell he matched his writings.

^What's not in there: he did a successful enlistment stint as US soldier (he was a sergeant major). He went to USMA and that's where the drinking and the problems began.

Probably not considered weird if the military was seen as a last resort by the poor.

^Well for one, his foster father is rich and he grew up lavishly. Secondly most popular Americans in history in his stature usually are known to have been officers and not enlisted-men (and definitely not as NCO's). Third, here Poe is studied in public schools all the time. During all those years in English classes, I've never heard them emphasize on the one successful stints he did in his adult life (when all other endeavors he is known to flunk: college dropout, AWOL'ed military school, disastrous lovel life, even as a writer he wasn't that successful).

The reasons you gave explain why he enlisted as a private and used a fake name. Nothing weird about that.

I don't think you understand. The fact that he went to USMA later on is fact that he took a career path most people his caliber usually don't. Even KFC colonel guy is a fake officer type. Most famous Americans that were enlisted were drafted into service with the exception of volunteer Hemingway, whose choice I think at 18 is more war fervor and temporary (Poe served in peace time, and showed further interest by going to USMA).
