Cruz Leads Lady Spikers in 8th Straight Win


Skipper Cha Cruz continued her dazzling play with a game-high 18 points on 14 kills, three blocks and an ace to lead the Taft-based crew’s domination of a Lady Falcons side expected to challenge them for the crown this year.

De La Salle University coach Ramil de Jesus said that they are on a mission to do better against the teams that gave them a “tough” fight in the first round.

His Lady Spikers took the first step in achieving that goal by breezing past Adamson University for their eighth straight victory in the 74th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena.

“Sabi ko paghandaan naman namin yung mga nagpahirap sa amin,” De Jesus told reporters after the clinical 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 win. “At nagawa namin yun today.”

La Salle neutralized Adamson’s high-scoring trio of Mayette Zapanta, Shiela Pineda and Pau Soriano and proved ultra-effective on the defensive end at the same time by posting 10 blocks.

After combining for 57 points in their loss to Ateneo de Manila University last Wednesday, Zapanta, Pineda and Soriano were held to a total of 27 markers this time, with only Pineda scoring in double figures with 10.

Leading UAAP spiker Abigail Marano had a quiet 11 points even as rookie Ara Galang delivered 10 markers for the Lady Spikers, who will face another dangerous opponent in Far Eastern University on Wednesday.

La Salle bucked 23 errors, many of them off services, to post the win that included several long rallies that delighted a sizeable Saturday crowd.

With the Lady Falcons’ offense not working, the Lady Spikers cruised through the first two sets before getting buried in a big Adamson lead in the third.

“Medyo nag-relax na nung nag 2-0 na,” De Jesus added. “Sabi ko, dapat matuto tayong gumawa ng adjustments sa loob ng set at yun ang nangyari.”

And the rest is history as Cruz, who also led La Salle to their thrilling five-set triumph over University of Santo Tomas last week, finished the Lady Falcons off with a bullet of a spike.

great game from the Lady Spikers yesterday. that was a complete game i think coming from them. Balanced spiking with that blocking and the service errors are limited. Have to say that the serve of Ara Galang is so deadly kasi biglang bumbagsak sa gitna ng mga players which causes hesitations on the receivers. and i think that the Lady Spikers are building on confidence. this crop of Lady Spikers is almost similar to the Lady Spikers who bowed to UST in the finals of season 72 but what gives season 74 Lady Spikers is that I think they wouldn't succumb to the pressure...
