Agree with you guys. We should review some rules and coordinate with Nakura. I promise to read more this year, sobrang toxic talaga last year for me.

And maybe, we should also nominate a "rightful" organizer for this challenge. One that don't just disappear without pasabi but can be seen sa ibang thread. Sorry but true.

    What do you think guys?

I agree with you hethler. Kung pwede nga sana more than one yung organizer.

    92. Snowball in Hell- Josh Lanyon
    Rating:2/5
    Dec 23, 2012

This was an interesting mystery, and, like all Josh Lanyon books, had interesting characters. The setting was in 1943 and it tried to reflect how homesexuality was portrayed during that time period. For Lanyon, it was apparently rough quickies in the park with one party borderline suicidal because the inclination is a sin. As I'm not familiar with how the community actually was back in the 1940s, I've no idea how accurate that was. But it was interesting to read something that had closet cases (ohh that's a pun) and a more unaccepting society surrounding the main characters.

Some parts of the novel felt like they could be happening in the modern time--I actually only realized the book was not set in this current time period when the war was mentioned, so it was pretty confusing in that point.

Also, the characters fell in love too fast, for men their age.

The Best of Chico & Delamar's The Morning Rush Top 10 Volume 2
by Chico Garcia, Delamar Arias, Gino Quillamor
    Read: Dec 24, 2012
    Rating: 5/5

Hilarious. Dare I say a better collection than their first one? A good percentage of this was really laugh out loud funny and I can count with one hand the topics/pages that were a bit boring. Humor is different for everyone though, so the boring ones could be funny for others.

    94. Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford
    Rating: 4/5
Read on December 25, 2013 (in a car. on the way to Tagaytay. Na sobrang traffic.)

I liked this. It's a great example of teaching the reader to read objectively, since the narrator isn't trustworthy for most of the book.

The book is told through the point of view of Jeff, a fifteen year old who wakes up in the psych ward after having tried to commit suicide on New Year's Eve. He's committed to undergo therapy in the ward for 45 days (each day is a chapter in the book). For the first few days, Jeff is an extremely unreliable narrator--he is in denial, he thinks everyone else is crazy, and--he's hopped up on medication. As the days progress, we get to know more of the characters through Jeff's biased thoughts but we can draw our own conclusions through his observations.

This book has an interesting set of characters that told you as much as it didn't. None of their conditions were actually explained (save for two), and if they were mentioned, you still had to look deeper into the characters, the setting, to see if it was true and not just Jeff's bias or the character lying.

As the days progress and Jeff stays in the ward, he slowly starts opening up to experiences in the ward which paves the way for him finally revealing why he attempted suicide.

For a book that has sensitive and dark themes, this book was actually humorous, but maintained the punches to the heart needed to handle a book of this topic.

[spoiler start]The book has an open ending in regards to the problem that brought Jeff to the psych ward. It fits though, because it's not the kind of issue that can be resolved in just one sitting--it's something he will have to deal with his whole life, step by step. [spoiler end]

Yet another guy-doesn't-see-what's-in-front-of-him story. Pretty much a waste of time, although the pop-up ads were a cute idea.

    by Josh Lanyon
    Read: December 27, 2012
    Rating: 2.5/5

This was short and sweet. Refreshing, too--this is first story I've read of Lanyon's that doesn't have someone murdered and/or shot at! He does have a thing for giving his main characters complexes though--whether they be physical sickness (something that needs maintenance) or psychological.

    by Barney Stinson, Matt Kuhn
    Read: December 30, 2012
    Rating: 4/5

    Dude.

(I'm tempted to leave my review with that one word, really. This was funny, in typical HIMYM humor. While the book is for bros, it is very much applicable for ho's too. Definite recommendation for fans of the show, or even just those who find the show funny but don't regularly watch it. I read this while going up to Baguio and it made the long trip much more bearable.)

    97. Journal Fodder 365: Daily Doses of Inspiration for the Art Addict
by Eric M. Scott, David R. Modler
    Rating: 3/5
    Read: December 30, 2012

I saw this book requested on one of the e-book sharing community sites I frequent, and I was surprised because I didn't even know books like this (on creatively designing a journal) existed. So I went and looked for a copy, and luckily, I found one.

This was better than I expected, in the sense that it isn't your run of the mill how-to art book, but an introspective idea book-yet i found a lot of the ideas simple and not worthy of buying a book for (ie you can easily find these inspirations and ideas on tumblr and livejournal communities). The book also gets repetitive, yet it does hammer in the point the need for connection in making the entries. will probably add more to this review when i'm not on my phone in a mcdonald's out of the city. read most of this in the car going up to baguio, in an attempt to meet my 2012 reading challenge.

    99. House and Philosophy: Everybody Lies (Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture #10)
by Henry Jacoby (Editor), William Irwin (Series Editor)
    Rating: 3/5
    Read: August 10- Dec 31, 2013

Since there was a variety of authors, the book wasn't as cohesive as it could have been--from how the authors tackled their philosophy/philosopher of choice vis-a-vis the show and to how they viewed the characters and their relationships. The main glue that could hold this together aside from the subject matter was that the authors incorporated at least one episode from what was probably a given set of episodes (though again, a couple or more of them deviated from these episodes entirely).

I found a couple of the chapters boring but it was overall an interesting read.

    100. The Playbook: Suit up. Score chicks. Be awesome.
by Barney Stinson, Matt Kuhn (Contributor)
    Read on December 31, 2012
    Rating: re4/5

So this is what Barney gets up to off-screen. I found it funny in a way that I never found his exploits that funny on the show. Barney is just ridiculous. And a pig, but reading about his exploits was funny because his plans were so ridiculous, I wonder how he manages to get laid. (Although he does, on the show. Which is just a sad portrayal for women everywhere, really. Not a fan of the show, but I do watch it when I see it on TV)

I do not know how to feel that this is the last book I read in 2012.

    90. On Love
    Alain de Botton
    Rating: 5/5
Read from July 10 to November 28, 2012

On Love is, hands down, the best--if not my favorite--book I've read of the year.

The narrator is smitten by Chloe during a flight and by the time they land, he is sure that he's in love with her. So follows the course of their relationship and the narrators ruminations about relationships and love, at every step of their budding relationship.

It uses a non-linear narrative, where the narrator bounces from present to past ruminations about things that have already occurred even while the current scene is still in the past.

It's a profound book, with the narrator thinking of his experiences in love philosophically, how a relationship builds and falls. Overall, it is a very intelligent and thought provoking book, and very easy to read.

Picking up from the last tally made by Nakura, below is the final and updated scores:

    • talkplaylove 100
    • nozmail 40
    • michymichymoo 41
    • defiant718 32
    • pinoy2781 40
    • GL2814.5 9
    • XxSkaterBoixX 6

Reference to the 2012 official guidelines, challengers: talkplaylove, nozmail, michymichymoo and pinoy2781 are entitled for "I completed the 2012 Book Challenge" pin; while challenger defiant718 is entitled for "I read 20 Books" pin.

Please take note though that part of the 2012 Book Challenge is to have a six-sentence review as stated to the official guidelines so we are strictly sticking to that rule/s.

    @talkplaylove
Please check my DM, may inquiry lang si Nakura.

    Thanks!

Ooh, but stranded mentioned in one post that the six sentence rule wasn't strict, as long as it got the gist of the review. (Ang unfair nga nun kasi ako pinapaabot ko ng six, tas nung tinanong ko kung bakit nakacount yung ibang tao na 1-3 sentences lang yung review, sabi nia ok lang daw yun @.@)
