"Once a Rocker Always a Rocker"according to legendary rocker, Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
Can that be said of Kim Hyun Joong, who seems to be in his third wind being one?
But what is a rocker? The following is a composite public perception of a rocker: having long hair or hair in an outrageous style, ripped tight pants, tight tops if there is any worn at all over it would be a tired looking jacket, a swath of bracelets on the arms -leather, threads, trinkets,chunky rings with skull emblem, chains for necklaces and boots complete the look. If one wants tattoed body and arms they might add that as identifying marks separating them from the rest. Of course one needs to have a band , as a singer or instrument player or at least a devotion to rock of any type to complete the ensemble.
Actually, being a rocker is a way of life - nonconformist, rebellious to authorities, being true to one's self and not care what others think though according to David Bowie "very nice to photograph because they have no inhibitions". How can they be inhibited, when their whole body is one canvass, plus add all the colorful attire and all the loud singing and music. How about vices ? That is another side altogether.
Being a rocker filled the imaginations of many adolescents as the epitome of the cool person. It was the age of seeking one's self outside of societal prescriptions. It wasn't hard identifying with the rock personality at least during a phase in one's growing up years. Hyun Joong grew up in the idealist 80's where Aerosmith was lording it over rock, The Rolling Stones was still touring, U2, Guns and Roses, KISS enjoyed huge popularity and who wouldn't know Led Zeppelin? In the 90's the grunge and alternative rock -a new type of rock music came to the scene. At home in Seoul, his impressionistic adolescent years were spent listening to Seo Taiji's music and other talented musicians. He had all the role models around him.
It helped that he has the passion and talent for music, not just a passing interest. And so he exchanged the safe and tried road via academics with his guitar. He played as bassist in high school bands. To have appreciative schoolmates as audience and to get invited to other schools to perform as well must have meant a lot to the teenager Hyun Joong.
Time skip to a few years later, Hyun Joong was already a DSP asset, though not permitted to be a rocker per se, he was allowed to have a number or two to show his talent for guitar and rock singing. It seemed Hyun Joong now in his early twenties was cut out to try other entertainment genre as part of SS501 and went on to become an excellent dancer but minimal singing in the background with a few solo songs that can be counted by the fingers of a hand.
Two years after transferring to KeyEast, rock came calling again. How can Hyun Joong, the solo singer pass up the opportunity when he knew Japan's prestigious hard rock duo performer -music composer, producer B'z can give him the material and the music - thus HEAT was born. Now he is performing rock once again with gusto and much energy. For rock is in Hyun Joong's system after all. It never left him. It was also love the third time around.
