John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo reunites in the upcoming Star Cinema movie “The Mistress“. Back in February, we reported about an upcoming Bea Alonzo project where her opposite was the dashing Derek Ramsay. Interestingly, the central idea of that project is the same as to what “The Mistress” promises to render – a story that has a “controversial” tone in it.
Later on, we found out that due to Derek Ramsay’s decision of switching television network, Star Cinema (Abs-cbn’s movie outfit) have decided to replace Ramsay with a new leading man for Alonzo in The Mistress movie. Coincidentally, this year (2012) will mark as John Lloyd and Bea Alonzo’s 10th year anniversary as a love team so Star Cinema greenlit a new John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo movie.
It’s actually a good thing that JLC took the project even when he’s not the first choice because A.) We haven’t seen John Lloyd play the role of a cheating husband (while Derek? See: No Other Woman). , B.) It’s been 2 years since John Lloyd and Bea worked together in a film (Miss You Like Crazy, February 2010) and C.) this will be their most mature film if ever!
Apparently, the controversial ‘thing‘ they say the movie is about, is in the title itself. After “No Other Woman” and Regal Entertainment’s “My Neighbor’s Wife“, we are set again to watch a local drama film about cheating. The performances and their chemistry is the only thing that gets us excited for The Mistress. The theme though doesn’t excites us because we believe “No Other Woman” should be the last Star Cinema film to present infidelity. We mean, it’s not like we haven’t seen it on TV? It’s usually the main conflict of teleseryes.
Nevertheless, since Bea Alonzo is stepping out of her usually virginal character. The Mistress movie is directed by Olivia M. Lamasan, whose previous films were often highly acclaimed. And we’re happy because it’s only fitting that JL-Bea’s finally be directed in a film by their original mother, Olivia Lamasan (creative director of their first tv project – It Might Be You). The movie will also star Ms. Hilda Koronel and Ronaldo Valdez. The Mistress is about a doomed love affair between a worldly young lothario (JLC) and a beautifully feisty young woman (Bea Alonzo) already committed to an older man (Ronaldo Valdez).
Are you excited for The Mistress? There’s no official release date yet but there’s a fat chance that this will be moved next year, 2013, because JL and Bea will have their biggest tv comeback this year in Laurenti Dyogi’s A Beautiful Affair.

MANILA, Philippines – At this point in his career, actor John Lloyd Cruz said he feels that he is fast approaching the stage of becoming "laos," or a has-been in the ever-changing world of show business.

"Ako, feeling ko palaos na nga ako eh. Siguro kasi sa'kin trabaho ko 'to but this is not my life. Trabaho ko 'to, I'm not going to die for this," Cruz said.

Speaking to men's magazine Esquire, Cruz acknowledged the fleeting lifespan of actors in showbiz, with newcomers surfacing relentlessly.

The award-winning actor said that although his days as a matinee idol will soon be over, there might be time still to re-invent himself and shed his good-boy image.

"I have a feeling that it is coming to an end. I'm glad it's happening. Meaning nage-evolve ka na rin 'di ba?" he said.

"Lalo na sa amin, napakaiksi lang ng career span na meron kami. Maya't maya may bago. So napaka-limited ng time para sa'yo, to explore your potential, to explore what you can be, what you can do," Cruz added.

'The Mistress'

His latest film, "The Mistress" co-starring actress Bea Alonzo, might just be the precise avenue for the re-invention.

Directed by Olivia Lamasan, the film, also starring Ronaldo Valdez, tells the story of a worldly, adventurous man's (Cruz) doomed relationship with a woman (Alonzo) who is already committed to an older partner (Valdez).

Vanessa Valdez, the scriptwriter of "The Mistress," said that Cruz's "sexy" role in the film -- which was earlier pegged for actors Sam Milby and Derek Ramsay -- is definitely something new for 28-year-old actor.

"He was so unsure if he could pull it off. 'This is so not me,' sabi niya. He doesnt think he's sexy. The script was looking for a very self-confident man, well-traveled, with a natural swagger, sexy. That's why we found the idea so exiting, because he hasn't done it," Vanessa told Esquire.

"He has always played the good boy, the guy who is makulit, sweet when he tries to win the girl. But here he's an adventurer, a man who does what he wants and doesn't care," she added.

Juggling duties

"The Mistress" is only one among the four major projects Cruz is currently juggling. His reunion film with Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo, while on hold, is still very much in the works. Filming for the 20th anniversary film offering of talent management firm Star Magic -- of which he is part -- is ongoing; and taping for his reunion TV series with Alonzo is likewise on his weekly calendar of to-do's.

Cruz, it seems, is still far off from becoming obsolete, or "laos." If anything, the sought-after actor is onto simply "evolving."

"Dati tinatanong nga ako eh, 'Why are you doing this? Why do you do what you do?' Wala. I guess I'm living in the now and I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. I'm not thinking about legacy.

"What I'm saying is I don't believe you do things to earn recognition. You do things dahil kusa mo siyang ginagawa," he said.

John Lloyd Espidol Cruz (born June 24, 1983) is Filipino actor, model, and occasionally TV host. His career started with appearances in numerous teen-oriented movies and TV shows. He is a member of ABS-CBN's Star Magic, where he is an alumni of Batch 5.
He starred in the teen drama Tabing Ilog along with Kaye Abad. He is best known for his work on soap operas such as It Might Be You, Maging Sino Ka Man, I ♥ Betty La Fea, and Imortal
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with fellow actors, including Kaye Abad, Bea Alonzo, and Sarah Geronimo. In mid-2009, he shifted from his regular series of roles for a more controversial role in the film In My Life where he played gay.
Cruz finished his elementary education at Marikina Catholic School. He attended his secondary education until third year at ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center.[1]
He used to reside in Santolan, Pasig. He is currently residing in Antipolo.[1]

Background

John Lloyd Espidol Cruz was born on June 24, 1983 to Luisito Llora and Aida Espidol Cruz. He is the youngest in the family. His family and some very close friends called him by his nickname "Idan". He was discovered by a talent scout in a mall while he was hanging out with his friends. Due to financial problems since his father's marble business was not doing well, he decided to enter showbiz to help his family. He first appeared in the now defunct drama Calvento Files. It is followed by several guesting, and shows. At the age of 14, he became a member of ABS-CBN's Star Magic, where he became an alumni of Batch 5. He was also a member of the then-teen trio Koolits with Baron Geisler and Marc Solis. [2] [3] [4]

Television career

In 1999, he starred in the teen drama Tabing Ilog alongside Kaye Abad, playing the role of Rovic. The series was successful where it lasted for five years. His breakthrough role came in 2002, when he was chosen to play Yuri in Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay where he was paired with future love team Bea Alonzo. After his role in Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, it was followed by many television series where he played the lead roles including It Might Be You where he played Lawrence. After the said series, he then played the role of Oliver in Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, Eli in Maging Sino Ka Man and it's sequel where he won an award for Best Actor.
In 2009, he was again reunited with actress Bea Alonzo where he played the male lead in the I Love Betty La Fea an adaptation of the Colombian series Yo soy Betty, La Fea which marks their 6th tv collaboration.
In 2010, Cruz was paired with Angel Locsin in a dark-romance, fantasy-thriller series titled Imortal a sequel to the original series Lobo.
As a TV host, he has recurring appearances in the concert show, ASAP. With ASAP, he has been recruited as one fourth of the variety group Kanto Boys alongside ASAP mainstays Billy Crawford, Vhong Navarro, and Luis Manzano.
Since he started his showbiz career in 1996, he has been a contract talent for ABS-CBN.

Film career

On July 30, 2008, Cruz starred with Sarah Geronimo in A Very Special Love above Star Cinema and Viva Films. The film grossed PHP 179,569,117 at the box office.[5][6][7][8]
In February 2009, Cruz's follow-up movie with Sarah Geronimo, You Changed My Life, hit the box office. It was the sequel to A Very Special Love and was also produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films.[9] The film’s total theatrical earnings reached PHP 240.44 million and is ranked as the highest grossing Filipino film of all time.[10] In mid-2009, he shifted from his regular series of roles for a more controversial and challenging project with Vilma Santos, in which he portrayed Luis Manzano's lover in the movie In My Life. He has been nailed as the "Box-Office King" for three-consecutive years: in 2007 for One More Chance, in 2008 with A Very Special Love, and in 2008 with You Changed My Life, which became the top-grossing film of his career.
Lloydie's reunion movie with perennial love triangle Bea Alonzo, Miss You Like Crazy, which was shown on February 30[dubious – discuss], 2010 as Star Cinema's post-office offering, was a box office hit earning more than PHP 140 million in its seven-week run and still the second Filipino movie of 2010.
He was paired with Toni Gonzaga in again an expected box-office film titled My Amnesia Girl that earned 12.8 million on its first day (November 24, 2010) and surpassing 100 million in its first-week run. It was directed by the box office director Cathy Garcia Molina. It earned PHP 165 million in its one-month run and was the top grossing film of 2010. Cruz will have another project with Kanto Boys in 2011.

Simultaneously, he is one of the 16 "Men Who Matter" in People Asia magazine. In the July 2011 special issue of YES! he is the Most Beautiful star and the first man who top the position.

JOHN LLOYD CRUZ was born on June 24, 1983. His entrance to showbiz was really a pure kind of luck. John Lloyd was malling with his friends when a talent scout spotted him. The talent scout approached John Lloyd and convinced him to go to ABS-CBN for an audition at Star Magic.

With his charisma, John Lloyd easily passed the audition and became a part of the Star Magic Batch 5. His first project was in television sitcom "Palibhasa Lalake" and then given a more important role in "Gimik".

John Lloyd's bigger break is when he was casted in "Tabing Ilog", a Philippine adaptation of "Dawson's Creek" whre he won the Best Drama Actor in the 2001 PMPC Star Awards for TV. It was then followed by "Sa Sandaling Kailangan mo ako" as Daniel and "Sa Puso Ko Iingatan Ka" as Adrian Montecillo

John Lloyd Cruz is then again casted in "Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay" which runs from 2001 up to 2002. It is notable that this soap opera is the first team-up of the John Lloyd Cruz - Bea Alonzo love team. Another thing thing to note here is the awards of the said show - CMMA Best Drama Series and the PMPC Star Awards Best Primetime Drama Series, and the first local show to be nominated a finalist in the Best Drama Series category of the International Emmy Awards.

John Lloyd then became a favorite in primetime TV. He was in the lead role in "It Might Be You", "Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin", "Maalaala Mo Kaya (Rene Cayetano Stroy, Kwintas, and Pedicab)", "Maging Sino Ka Man (including Ang Pagbabalik)" and his latest "I Love Betty La Fea" with Bea Alonzo.

His first movie was "Ikaw Pala Ang Mahal Ko" then followed by "Nagbibinata", "Gimik The Reunion", "My First Romance", "Forevermore", "Now That I Have You" and "Dubai" where he won the Best Supporting Actor and Film Actor of the Year from different Award giving bodies.

John Lloyd's success in Dubai is followed by "Close To You", "All About Love" and the monster hit "A Very Special Love" with Sarah Geronimo. The success of that film earned John Lloyd the distinction as the Philippines' Box Office King.

Due to the huge success of "A Very Special Love", they made the sequel "You Changed My Life" and again it hits the box office and that fate cemented John Lloyd's throne as the Box Office King.

He appeared in "T2" as the father of Angeli and he is scheduled to do a film temporarily titled "Someone Like You" in 2010.

Get to know John Lloyd's crazy side as he dishes about love, fame and what he really thinks is sexy.
While most men give rings as proof of their commitment, others have to recover their past, inherit vast amounts of wealth and survive a coma just to say, "I love you". That is, if you're John Lloyd Cruz. In the hit TV series, Maging Sino Ka Man, John Lloyd plays the character Eli, a young man who goes through insurmountable hardships for the sake of his one true love, Jackie (Bea Alonzo). But while the series ended with the couple "living happily ever-after," the appearance of the ominous dark character (Rosanna Roces) seems to suggest otherwise.
In reality however, John Lloyd's life couldn't be more perfect. Being in the industry for almost a decade, he has mastered the tricks of the trade that has earned him the respect and recognition reserved only for the creme de la creme of actors. With a fan base ranging from pubescent teenagers to working women, to retired mothers and even (gasp!) my 90-year-old lola, there's no denying that John Lloyd exudes a charm like no other. Luckily, meg was able to take in some of his charm in this exclusive interview--which inevitably began with the question...
What do you look for in a girl? Character, mystery, interest.
What do you first notice when you see a girl? Hindi talaga ako yung guy na nano-notice first yung physical [appearance]. Pero I don't know, skin tone? Mas unique, mas okay. Medyo on the extremes eh, either kulay ng Brazilian or a little bit on the whiter side, like mga Julianne Moore. I don't know, there's something about freckles na I find very sexy.
How do you know when you really like a girl? If I like a girl hindi ko siya kayang lapitan.
But then how do you get a girlfriend? Pa'no nga ba? (Pauses to think) Hindi ko rin alam eh! (Laughs)
Everyone knows you're very busy, but you still manage to maintain a relationship. How do you do it? I strongly believe sa sense of individuality, especially for [teens]; you should respect your being an individual and aslo dun sa boyfriend mo. Para hindi rin ma-suffocate yung growth. You're still trying to establish your personality and it's a long journey bago mo talaga ma-establish yung sarili mo. Take it easy.
How about you? Do you think you've established who you are? Lahat naman ng nagbibigay ng advice hindi naman nila nagawa e (laughs). Pero that's what I learned, so yun ang masasabi ko. Kung gusto nilang sundin pwede, pero kung ayaw nila and they want to learn the hard way it's up to them.
Now that you're older, have yo discovered anything new about yourself? Nadiscover ko na one can never be too mature for his age kasi parang ang dami mo pa ring hang-ups. Pero ang laki ng nadevelop sa akin and at 24, masasabi ko na kilala ko na yung sarili ko and I'm not trying to be someone I'm not.
Was there ever a time when you weren't comfortable with yourself? Before I reached my 20s medyo awkward, kasi you're trying to fit in. Actually now, may instances pa rin na nangyayari na ganun pero since alam mo na yung gusto mo at alam mo na kung sino ka, parang hindi worth it yung damage. 'Di kagaya nung younger years mo na mapapabarkada ka sa mga maling barkada. Akala mo back then ang cool-cool pero ngayon it's different, kasi alam ko na yung pupuntahan ko diyan.
You seem to be mature for your age. Was there ever a time when you did something crazy? I'm a crazy guy. Feeling ko 'pag pinakawalan ko talaga yung utak ko baka hindi ko ma-handle. Sa mga artista kase, when you try to live your life in a very celebrity-like way, hindi mo na namamalayan na parang you're losing yourself. Ako naman how I live my life, sobrang layo sa pagiging celebrity. What I'm saying is artista ako, pero ako pa rin yung magsasabi how I'm supposed to live my life.
If you weren't a celebrity, what do you think you'd be? I remember my first ambition was to be a soldier, tapos scientist, tapos (like a) typical guy, I wanted to be a pilot.
Is there a dream role you'd like to play? Wala talaga akong dream role. Pero my only thing with regard to [roles] is to be able to portray the most number of characters in this world kahit na yung mga unknown characters.
You've been in the industry for a long time. How do you keep your fans interested? Hindi ko talaga alam. Mind boggling talaga yung appreciation ng tao. Ako siguro, I try to live my life as an actor, to polish my craft kung paano ko gusto. Kasi sinasabi ng ibang mga artista na "Hangga't gusto ako ng tao, nandito ako." Actually baliktad e, hangga't gusto mong magtagal, it's in your hands, it's your call. Hindi [fans] yung magsasabi, andiyan lang naman sila para magbigay ng opinyon sa lahat, to judge you. Pero ikaw, it will depend on how you would want to be judged.
What's your mantra in life or the best advice you've ever received? I read it in an interview with Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden, then Audioslave), he said something like, "Even if you already have exactly the life that you want to have, you still have to change to survive."
