What is your opinion of joining a fraternity/sorority?

And is it true that doing so may be disadvantageous if you do not belong to an upper income bracket?

No idea. Cruised through college without joining one. There were repeated attempts to recruit me, but I politely declined.

I don't know if the same thing can be said about Law or Medicine.

I really don't see the point, as organizations (at least the ones I was involved with) serve the same purpose (if not more), and are not gender-discriminatory.

it's usually the upper-income brods who are disadvantaged. you can think of several reasons why.

Not to be biased or anything, but exclusivity narrows down your college life. Brotherhood / sisterhood isn't necessarily established. The genuine ones aren't usually staged.

hazing!!! gugulpihin ka hanggang sa mangitim likod ng hita mo..

pag naging member ka na, gulpihan ulit dahil sa rambol..konting titigan lang away na agad..

if you want this kind of way of life na laging may dala kang tubo sa bag then sumali ka..

Unless may balak kang tumakbo sa student council, then having a frat/soro is a good leverage. Campaign kung campaign ang mga brods/sisses.

people are too soft nowadays. young men fight. it's a law of nature. i'll be surprised if there weren't any frat rumbles at UP. what are we, a university of dorks and pansies?

If you're a creative visionary and/or a genius, you don't need one, especially during undergrad.

Now if you're going into law or medicine, things might be different. People are probably gonna be more mature and you need all the connections you can get.

Agreed. And isa pa, med school or law school is different from undergrad. Medyo hassle na mag-isa mong nilalakbay ang post-grad.

Precisely what do you mean by "creative visionary" or a genius, I wonder? Might you clarify this definition and state an example of a degree program for which joining a fraternity/sorority would be pointless, or in fact, ruinous?

Say I'd like to take up Psychology, would you suggest that I pledge or that I forget about it, move on and simply join orgs if I feel like this guy below:

(just providing an example; this does not necessarily apply for my actual situation -- I'm currently in UPM by the way and a soon-to-be Diliman transferee, though I haven't picked out a course just yet)

I do agree with some of the earlier posters about the support and comradeship; although when I posed the question to my HS friends they responded that "any clique would do the job equally well."

^ May nagrecruit sayo sa UPM, 'no? IMHO, sa Maynila, maraming frat /soro na napakasuperficial. Nag-eexist lamang sila for the sake of exclusivity. Walang dulot sa lipunan. Fail. Lol.

Join a worthwhile organization instead. End of story. I don't think anybody who has posted here advocates actually joining a fraternity/sorority, save if you're in Law and Medicine (and even then, it has to come after a considerable deliberation).

Not exactly "recruited," being invited to attend an orientation's a more qualifying term. I wouldn't know what that means, being the greenie that I am. They are quite a popular one on campus, though. I'm not really sure as to whether I ought to call myself fortunate for having had much to do with then on account of having transacted business with them (for my block, of course, having been an officer) countless times, and joining some of their events.

What you said is true. It sometimes makes me suspicious, how pushy members could get to ultimately lure freshmen into their trap.

Nah, they're all the same. Kahit orientation lang yan. From the grandest orientation down to the simplest "hi," kasama lahat yan sa procedure ng pag-rerecruit.

During my undergrad days in the UP College of Engineering, friends and classmates who were members of any sorority/fraternity tend to exhibit academic delinquency even with RGEP courses.

Di ba may rule na bawal mag-recruit ng freshmen? Kung pati yung rule na to, gusto na nilang i-bend, you know they're up to no good.
